There's something about Michael Stipe that is so comforting - it might be that there's 'no bullshit' nor 'airs nor graces' about him, or that he enters a room without flagging his celebrity or stature. How do I know this? I used to see him at Sundance in Park City - happy to sit at a sidewalk table, quietly sipping a coffee, engaged in conversation with novice film makers. That kind of interaction helps you through the tough times.

I’ve known 2 people who met Michael stipe and 2 people who met Donald trump. The 2 who met Stipe said that he was a complete douchebag. One of the 2 who met trump said he was quiet but friendly. The other one said he was more outgoing and friendly.
It amuses me to imagine how much someone like Michael Stipe annoys Trump supporters. Every aspect of his personality seems to be constructed out of things that scare/irritate Trumpites.
I wouldn't think he would annoy them. Most don't know who he is unless they are over 50, and Stipe is such a kind, gentle soul and is very genuine. He isn't obnoxious or hate driven like Colbert, he just states his opinion and people are free to agree or disagree. Colbert may be divisive, but Michael Stipe is as genuine as they come.
@@howardbreauxii811 Colbert isn't 'hate-driven' unless you're a Trump apologist. Which I suspect you are. Really, he's just - understandably - disgusted and sickened by the behaviour of the American right, Trump, the GOP. I think it's pretty natural for a normal, decent human being to react with disgust when watching the car-crash of this administration. That doesn't make someone 'hate-driven'. The people who are driven by hate are the extreme Trump supporters, who voted a lunatic crook into the White House, simply out of spite at liberals.
@@howardbreauxii811 You're entitled to your opinion, yes, that doesn't make it any less wrong or dishonest. Colbert routinely sits down and talks with people with whom he disagrees all the time, and does so in a non-hateful way. The idea that he is "hate-driven toward anyone who doesn't share his views" is a fantasy of your own construction. I suspect this fantasy makes it easier for you to support Donald Trump - to pretend that everyone who criticises him is somehow 'hateful'. That makes Trump the victim, rather than all the people who suffer at the president's tiny hands. It's typical of the aggressors to portray themselves as the victims throughout history. It's an easy way out for you, so you don't have to think about what you're actually doing when you support him.

They go low, we go high. Vote Blue 2020.
That's didn't work last time. I say when they go low, we kick em in the nuts!
Its clear you can't shame Trump. You have to tear him down, overwhelm him. Hurt his feelings. Make fun of his wife and the fact that shes married to him. Make fun of his kids, weight and hair! It's time we stop taking the high road.
Sorry. I'm Voting Red. And I'm voting TRUMP!
@@johnlennon1970 It's your vote comrade!
BERNIE2020
How did that work for you last time?
Losers!!
"Vibrate in reaction to the world" is such a perfect description of Michael Stipe's voice and work.
I aspire to one day let go of all my anger just like Michael Stipe. It's so hard.
Cultivate your humility.
Right on, Doug 💐
Right on, Doug 💐
Well do what he did: stop watching the news, quit caffeine, and quit social media!
One of my absolute favorite people 💙
Hope you might be backing our boy from Brooklyn again Michael #bernie2020
Oh my god, I thought I was the only one who had to go off coffee when trump was elected.
I went the other way -- mostly a tea drinker, but now doing coffee like every other day. Stipe's recounting of Trump is 100% on target. He's an inconsiderate asshole, hasn't changed. Vote him out 2020!
@@cytherians I bought a bong!
I bought a bong and plan on staying high until he's gone!
I just went on coffee again, after 5 years; because of Trump!
@@cytherians if we vote Bernie, the world will be a better place. That simple. No more billionaire buyouts!!
This man looks how I feel inside. The anxiety is palpable
Vibration is a perfect description. I saw REM 21 years ago and it was mesmerizing.
Imagine a scenario, where Trump starts rambling at one of his rallies, and every single person at the venue just turns and walks out.. Everyone...even reporters leave, but leave the cameras fixed on him, so everyone watching Live get to see the Trump's reaction.
Mmmm can somebody put this idea on motion for his following rally, Please 🙏
That would be EPIC !
I love this fantasy.
Or everyone yells at him to shut up!!!
Like when the Deltas left the courtroom in Animal House.
His vibe can be felt through the Internet..very grounded...felt good..
I will forever be grateful I grew up songs by people like this guy. 💜
I love you Michel. Many people in Rio de Janeiro loves you.
I agree about we all need to stop watching the news!! I quit watching it a long time ago!! Haven't been able to give up caffeine yet lolo
Stones do not want to be played at DJT rallies
@Chaos Burrito maybe some christian rock bands?! i don't really know.
Twisted Sister sure as hell don't!
@Chaos Burrito Probably 3 Doors Down and the Mike Huckabee Band...hoo-eee.
Even Nickelback doesn't want to be played at Trump's rallies
Chaos Burrito Nugent, probably. He's just as disgusting as trump.
HE SAID 'TRUMP SHUT UP' BEFORE US ALL.. TRULY AHEAD OF HIS TIME THANK YOU MICHAEL STIPE
lol at the Muzak version of Nightswimming Jon arranged for this.
It's clarifying how much the Arts revolt against fascism + it's super important people understand better the value of the arts in this environment.
This clarity is the only upside of going through this now.
Thank you Stephen for bringing that out in this interview + thank you both for continuing to fight the good fight!
I saw them perform at 688 around 1980 or 81 in Atlanta. There were about 30 people there! Early days, but could see the potential. There's a live taping of that show on TH-cam!
I appreciate the intro music which is a variation of Nightswimming, my favorite R.E.M song.
Same...no news, no social media, no tv, only you tube and books.
What was trump doin at a pattie smith gig, ?
It's like George Bush turning up to see the clash,it don't make sense
I love listening to Michael Stipe.......he is such an interesting man !
Unfortunately Stipe's suggestion didn't take, eh?
That tale would have been even more interesting if they somehow made an effort to leave the punchline out of the video title....🙄
I can speak to that because this video just played automatically for me and I didn't see it coming. Made for a great story twist!
What a forthright honest human being.
I missed you so much, sir!🌼
I ran into a guy that looked and talked like Michael Stipe today. Im pretty sure it was him.
How refreshing to hear from a fellow misfit toy. So happy to see Michael looking so grounded and creative again.
As if I needed another reason to like this dude
Damn Michael stipe still looks the same man 20 years later
Respect
At UGA, I drove a bit into Michael Stipe as he was crossing. Nearly touched him. He looked to acknowledge and smiled his way forward. Such a pleasant guy! And, everyone there knows his musical love.
