    wow what a great and unbiased review, one would expect a bit more supportive review considering the pact between Sariel and Lego yet fortunately Sariel keeps his own mind and has no problem with critisizing not-that-great lego set. I especially liked the detailed review of dual clutch transmission which would seemed totally great but the review showed its limitations therefore i probably skip this set for something more intriguing.. thank you

    Sariel, once again, a GREAT review! The best thing about your reviews is that you lay it out like it really is. I'm (really) tired of the it's-a-bad-set-but-I-think-it's-fantastic kind of reviews that you usually find at Lego blogs/fan sites, specially if said site has some sort of relation with the TLG. It's really nice to read an honest review, where both the good and the bad is actually explained without sugar-coating of the negative points of the set. Please keep up this kind of review!

      Normally I would agree with this, but building a complicated lego set like this is mainly about the build experience. I'd say 80% about the build experience and the rest will be about function and playability. If you want an RC car, then buy one and not this.

  • @Herxal
    @Herxal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    My guess is, your friction problem is not a problem of the model but a problem of careless building. I do not know this model, but in 42043 you complained about a heavy going steering. When I built that one, the steering turned out to be wonderfully nice and smooth and easy going (same with the crane arm). One needs to be very careful during construction that every single axle involved moves easily. Resistances of single elements add up very quickly, so in the Porsche's complex transmission it is probably completely hopeless if you don't build with utmost care. I would take a bet that if I built it, there would be no friction problems.

      Herxal you cant expect Sariel to fix a problem is its manual has an error in it.
      so Lego is the one to be blamed.

    • @jltworks3167
      @jltworks3167 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Herxal probably is poor building, I’ve had this set and the gearbox worked fine, but Lego is to blame for the wrong shifting order. And the paddles behind the steering wheel don’t work too smoothly

    • @jltworks3167
      @jltworks3167 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      trifon jacobs well idk about roasted, he was just proved wrong, we aren’t sure ourselves how he had that problem with the gearbox, I had it before but then I switched the gears around as shown before and it actually worked without friction, but I also feel the review on the Bugatti and Porsche was a bit rushed to review it before others, and the Bugatti review he gave us incorrect information, for example he said the suspension struggles to work because of the weight, but it actually isn’t, it’s because Lego made the suspension arms so stiff it was affecting the springs, and he said the speed key couldn’t be fitted anywhere in the model when in fact it just about fits in the luggage space beneath the bonnet, I wouldn’t say he got roasted but he was more proven wrong, because he rushed this and the Bugatti review

    The Porsche Tank and the "People who hate orange" parts both made me spit my drink!!! LOL
    It's a shame that Lego doesn't make as awesome or creative technic sets as they did back in the 90's. The Super Street Sensation is absolutely amazing and is a blast to build and play with!! Likewise with pretty much every Expert Builder set. Nowadays, they're so focused on Minifigures and Licensing that all the soul and spirit is gone IMO. My only real justification for this set is that any sealed technic super car costs at least twice that of this set. Since you're interviewing the Lego Technic staff soon, could you ask what happened to those kind of sets? I think those were the best times Lego has ever had :) great and honest review Sariel!!

    I was so hyped for the first part of the video, the beautiful box, the not red supercar, the awesome instructions book. Then I saw you build the rubber band things behind the steering wheel, thinking it might be a return to center mechanism of some sort. Until it turned out to be a sequential transmission system in an official lego set. Until then I was hyped at a normal level, but at that moment my hype was doubled or so. "That is amazing, all custom transmissions I tried in the past didn't work for what I wanted, an official Lego one must work wonderfully!" And then I watched the rest of the video. Such a shame :( Have fun in Denmark ;)

    One of the most unbiased and objective review for a Lego Set. I love the looks and color the set features but the overly complicated/useless gearbox and light/RC unfriendly design really made this set worthless to me.
    Your review truly saved me the money and effort to get this set. Thank you!

  • @ninjafruit816
    @ninjafruit816 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Oops I'm about a year late, but at 29:30, the motor that you added in is actually providing power to the wheels, thus why there is little difference (no difference to be precise) between the speeds. But changing the gears does make the engine rotate at different speeds. To have the gears work, one would have to drive the car through the engine in the back which cannot be done without extensive modifications since there is absolutely no room for motors in the back.

    • @jltworks3167
      @jltworks3167 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ninjafruit816 yeah exactly, that’s what I mentioned. Idk if it’s just me that thinks that sariel’s Porsche and Bugatti reviews were slightly rushed? The gearbox works fine if you fix the shifting order, and it’s meant to affect the engine because that’s the power source in the real car. As for motorisation you can place 2 motors beside it to drive it with the gearbox

    Regarding the Lego Technic Porsche 911 GT RS - 42056-1 (2016) Build...
    For the price, I would have expected everyone to have properly tested the build process prior to release. Apparently, that never happened as there are more than a few mistakes in the instruction book. The paddle gear box, the gear change between 2nd & 3rd gear, the steering do not properly function as one would expect.

  • @TinkeringJohn
    @TinkeringJohn 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Sariel. I enjoy watching your reviews. I don't want to spend $300 for this set, so I downloaded the instructions from the Lego Shop website. I studied how the gearing for the drivetrain was built. I seen where you added a motor, but it didn't make sense to me, so I built just the drivetrain to watch how it worked. The reason you don't see any speed changes when you shift the transmission with the motor mounted in the front of the drivetrain (in front of the forward/reverse gearbox) is because you are sending power through the forward/reverse gearbox and directly to the differential, bypassing the transmission. All you will get is forward and reverse at a constant speed that the motor runs at. The transmission will make the pistons in the engine move at the different speeds though, but not the wheels. I looked at janbricks' video showing him running it under power and shifting gears successfully. The reason for this is, @2:55 he says he added a PF motor to the rear of the car behind the engine, thus it is powering the transmission as a real car would.

    • @TinkeringJohn
      @TinkeringJohn 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also with the motor driving the geartrain from the front, the crankshaft in the engine will always turn and in the same direction no matter if you have the shifter in forward, neutral, or reverse but in the proper gear providing the transmission isn't locked up between gears.

I will agree with you %100. it is not worth the price tag to true enthusiaats, only those who would like a model to put in shelf. • @TinkeringJohn
    @TinkeringJohn 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Sariel. One thing I noticed you had trouble with was the noise the tranny made. One reason for this is... @28:08 you can see that the shifting mechanism is out of sync with both gear shifter rings engaged. You MUST have one of the two gear shifter rings in the neutral position. The 2 orange pieces that move the linkage bars must be either at the 12, 3, 6, or 9 o'clock position. A gear ring will be in the neutral (or middle) position when the orange piece is at 12 or 6 o'clock. You can see @28:25 that they are not in one of these positions. If both gear rings are engaged (even partially), it will cause the transmission to fight itself in 2 speed settings at the same time and make the gears grind. The model should of been better designed to ensure the shifter stays in sync. It may be because of too much play in the mechanism.

    • @TinkeringJohn
      @TinkeringJohn 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought about how the shifting mechanism works when changing gears and realized that it is basically like a tranny with an "H" shift pattern (except the speed positions are rearranged). In order to move the shifter from one side of the "H" to the other, you have to put the shifter in the middle position of one side in order to move the shifter over to the other. As for the sync problem, I am going to build the steering column and see why the linkage from the paddles on the column to the tranny doesn't turn exactly 90 degrees as it should.

    I'm disappointed you were so negative on this set, but I can't argue with any of your points. It's kind of soured me on getting this. I guess I'll put that money into my RC setup.

      Benbot the gearbox actually works fine, it’s just the shift in order should be fixed and leave it at that. I’m not really sure how his gearbox kept grinding, maybe from poor building or a mistake? Either way the gearbox works fine when the shifting order is fixed, and can be motorised from the engine

    35:25 Who won't like this set?
    - lego technic fans looking for cool functions
    - anyone who wants to actually play with this set
    - people who seriously cares about accuracy
    - people looking for a model that is RC or easy to mod into RC
    - *people who hates orange*

    I guess I kind of understand why people dislike this, but since I never owned a Technic set, I find it pretty cool more for a display model and not for functions although the Technic Community will probably attack me for saying that. I do like the Bucket Excavator as well

      I agree it looks nice but that seems to be it. If I were to buy a display set this is what I would probably get if the price could be fixed.

    Nice job! I just finished building mine today and I ended up with 39 extra little pieces. Is that normal or did i miss something? And where does sticker 3B go? Thanks

    Thanks for this review. Harsh as it is, I really needed a fair judgement of this set. No brakes, simple suspensions were probably OK with me, but I expected that the gearbox would work... better. Let's just hope you haven't made TLC mad at you with these (completely fair) criticisms.

    I love the music in the beginning. Sariel is the best technic reviewer of all time.

    Ten zestaw jest świetny. Dawno już nie było pojazdu w którym byłyby biegi i kierownicą można naprawdę skręcać. Brakuje tylko foteli pasujących do ludzików technic i byłby idealny. Szkoda że lego już nie tworzy zestawów z ludzikami lego technic. Zupełnie jak stary zestaw 8880 który chciałem mieć jak byłem mały.

    Sariel, absolutnie zgadzam się z twoją opinią. Ja, jako wielki, aczkolwiek niezbyt "bogaty" fan Lego, jestem trochę tym modelem rozczarowany. Myślałem, że lego zaoferuje nam trochę fajnych funkcji, zafunduje zaskoczenie,meczy coś w ten deseń, a tu wyszedł model raczej na pokaz, zaskoczenia rodziny, pobawienia się 10 min i odstawienia na półkę. Dodatkowo cena 300 dolców to zdecydowanie z dużo. Powiem szczerze, że miałem (cichą) nadzieję, że znajdą się tu jakieś funkcje RC, a tu lipa...

    Great video, such a shame the functions don't work better, especially for the price. I was so looking forward to that gearbox. It looks great though and I love the packaging and the mammoth instruction book!!! I'm not keen on how Lego are over simplifying their instructions these days. Technic sets are supposed to be more advanced and more challenging to build. I noticed there are around 800 steps to build it, my 8860 only has 24!!!

    This model is more from Porsche than from Lego. It's for car, especially Porsche enthusiasts. I have this model on my shelf and it was an amazing expirience building it (the most difficult set I have ever built).
