- Tornado 101.6mph run Edited Version of Prt2 15th May 2017. Copyright issues involving Universal Music Group meant the original clip could not be viewed on mobile devices, so I have tried to edit out those parts, hopefully everyone should be able to see this version now.

It's too easy to forget this is a NEW loco. Steam engines used to work outside of their usual expectations regularly. What we have lost is the skills to do it. These guys did well to make it happen. A 9f once went 90 mph. They were never expected to do more than 45. The crew is the key. Well done boys. Excellent.

Just watched the video again, David! I'm puzzled, though, by one thing. The Stock seemed to comprise a rake of mostly Mk. 3 coaches? I didn't think that they were compatible with Steam haulage - or have new features been incorporated into Tornado's design and build to make her 'Mk 3 friendly'?
I think the coaches comprised of what ever rolling stock West Coast had available at the time....although looking at it again, I dont think they are West Coast's carriages.. Someone out there more knowledgable than I will know Im sure..
David Robinson Fair enough, David - that will have to wait for more knowledgeable counsel to advise!
Tornado was designed with a dual vacuum and air brake system already in place, whereas most other big engines fitted to run on the mainline are retrofitted with a dual-brake system. I believe that this would make the difference regarding the mk3s; can't see why a steam-driven air brake system would be too different to one powered by diesel since the principle is identical. Hope this helped :)

Might be a while till then as the engine was completed in 2008 and it wasnt until 2017 (9 years later) that she was allowed to undertake the high speed test run. Her inaugural 90mph railtour wasnt a success either as everyone will know.
