Indeed. I feel the exact same way, and am reminded of photographer O. Winston Link's remark that a diesel/electric locomotive looks the same whether it's in the station or moving, but only with a steam engine do you see all the parts moving along with the smoke and steam.

When I watched this, I actually found out later on that Jeremy, despite hating things like commuter rail in cities like London, is a fan of engineering solutions like railways. He's British after all, so why would he hate trains? It's in his blood.
That being said, I would absolutely love to see him do a feature-length documentary about trains, be it the world over or within Britain itself

@@nicopavvi8494 they did have something similar, where they were tasked with taking a car and some caravans and making a train that was an affordable trip for everyone. It ended up as two separate trains because Jeremy wanted to use the Jaguar which couldn't haul the four coaches, and that it would still be horribly expensive to travel in, whereas May and Hammond got a four-wheel drive Audi and had a train that was set up as follows:
      First
Buffet (this caught fire at the end of their journey thanks to Hammond's appalling work as a steward and cook)
      Second

It’s weird of how steam trains in the UK can travel at over 70 mph and in New Zealand (where I’m from) trains are limited to 50 mph.

    • @johnsergei

Any steam loco with wheels over 6 feet high has the potential to do close to 100 MPH or even more.
Weather it is allowed to, weather it can be driven that hard & especially, if it can keep it's steam pressure up, will be they key. The wheels are the gearing.
Drive/fire it wrong or too hard & steam pressure drops & power falls off
The smaller tall wheeled locos of the late 19th century could attain 80 MPH or so, with a light train.
But the bigger Tornado sized engines of the 1930s, could cruse at that speed or higher, with heavy trains.
& Germany & a few trains in the USA could = them.
Steam may be romantic & the early diesels couldn't beat them (or even = them if the train was long & heavy).
Then came the Deltic ( Class 55)
Steam was beaten ( with some improvements on this line).
Then we have the InterCity 125, the HST., a diesel train with sort of electric train performance.
But the modern electrics will leave the HST still clearing the station.

Sucha massive undertaking it must have been. Who really cares if this was a fair race ? The train stole the whole show.. absolutely marvelous.. Fire, steel, steam and sweat. That machine like it was allowed one more run, one more proper shot. Thank you everyone involved all along the line from the Mayhamsons to Wagner.

DAVID ANTONIO CAMPOS BARROS while yes mallard is currently in cold storage, it could be pulled back into service. It's not like it's worn out, they just want to preserve what's left of the original engine, so much of Flying Scotsman is not original, but so much of Mallard is. They want to keep as much of Mallard as possible. If anything they would bring over Bittern, or work to get Dwight D Eisenhower running in the states since it's on display here.

One might argue that many trains in the UK are in effect "steam powered" these days since they are electrically powered and the electricity is generated by steam (that is made from using some sort of fuel like coal, natural gas, or nuclear as a heat source for the steam).
