TBF, some political ideologies do take on strong religious characteristics. For example, we call fascism a death cult for a reason. It's not ironic or metaphorical. It comes with a set of beliefs and shared behaviors which foster a sense of belonging. The beliefs are largely independent of fact and exist more as a story the group tells itself about why they do what they do and where they come from as a group.

And the arguments against slavery were more a product of humanism than any religion anyway. While religion was (and many times still is) used to argue for slavery, racism and segregation.

The takeover by the Soviets was also not really a choice either, it was imposed on them by the USSR. The 1956 revolution did put together a Socialist state by choice but that got put down really quickly. So Hungary wasn't communist by choice for any extended period of time at all.
