Being tired of extremes is a key part of the Harris promise. Trump has lowered the bar on discourse, instituted ad hominem attacks in place of policy proposals, lied about anything and everything and promised fascist behavior if elected - and you don't get much more extreme than that. I think racism lands differently for me. I hear Maher saying "I didn't do it, but I benefited from it". I grew up in a racist environment and was taught racist and classist things as a child (examples: certain neigborhoods being inherently dangerous, assumptions about people's intelligence and ability, etc). While I didn't say or do overtly racist things, I benefited from racism, and I believed what I was told at the time. As an adult, knowing this about my past, I have a responsibility to unlearn the racist crap as it comes up. I'm in my late 50s, and while I've deprogrammed myself quite a bit, I assume that I will continue to need to unlearn racist assumptions and tropes for the rest of my life. I don't feel bad about myself as a human being because of what I had to unlearn, but I do feel an ongoing responsibility to continue to deprogram myself.
You don't talk about "soiling the blood of our people" without being a Fascist. You don't say that there are good people among those carrying torches shouting "Jews will not replace us" and not be a Fascist. There is no gray zone here.

What Bill Maher doesn't seem to understand is that we LOVE being called "liberal" and "woke." These are *GOOD* qualities that every man, woman, and child should aspire to. This interview is an example of exactly the kind of dialogue we as country have to have. A liberal and a conservative calmly discussing important matters. And both agreeing that we don’t have to forget the wrongs done in the past both sides and learning but also looking forward to a more perfect union and how we get there.
The path forward is to slowly replace these unnecessaries in life. Religion is clearly on the way out. Something like 25% of all Americans identify as either atheist, agnostic, or unaffiliated. That's a step forward. Banning things makes them more desirable. We need to keep trash readily available until it becomes obsolete.
