      @@AmelAmaruRestrepoCasas Yup, I can't either. My best guess is that one of the updates eliminated that feature. He also used LFO's BEFORE instruments, which doesn't appear to be possible now. It's unfortunate because I don't see any other way to manipulate swing over time. I'd really like to know if it's still possible.

    • @AmelAmaruRestrepoCasas
      @AmelAmaruRestrepoCasas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelwilder7954 You can create automations on it. If you put it on arrangement mode set record and start moving the global swing thats on the upper left corner, next to the metronome, you can see an autoamtion line appear on the Masters channel.

    • @michaelwilder7954
      @michaelwilder7954 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@AmelAmaruRestrepoCasas Yea I noticed that too, but it is very cumbersome to tweak the parameters and it is destructive as well. I figured it out, he's using a MIDI LFO, not the audio LFO. I didn't have it on a default 10 suite download, I got it from the "Max for Live Essentials" pack on Ableton's website.

    I found this to be extremely useful. My normal workflow includes WAY too much time tweaking velocities and nudging things off the grid. I'm hoping it will save me a lot of time in the future. I added it to Ableton's Jazz Brush Kit drum rack, and the samples don't have a Tone control knob. But I played around with mapping the LFO to the Sustain and Release, and there's good stuff in there to experiment with. I think I even mapped it to Detune for one sound in the kit. Thanks for this tutorial!

    The groove pool automation is such a brilliant idea! Have started using similar techniques for HH's by grouping audio effects - freq mod, utility, sat etc - and mapping various parameters. Instead of using the MFL LFO I use the 'Randomizer' for automation. However, I could never think of how to randomise timing without creating phase issues! Great tutorial :)

      Max devices definitely can get CPU heavy but the LFOs are surprisingly lean. Depends on your system of course, but dropping a few in a project shouldn't eat up more CPU than other devices.

      @nothinghammchannel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @AbletonLiveschool
      @AbletonLiveschool  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nothinghammchannel using a drum synth (like Max For Live's drum synth device used in the tutorial) is easiest because the parameters are designed for drums. It's possible in samples too - if you know Sampler well then assign the Max For Live LFO to the volume velocity controls, the pitch controls and volume decay (but first drop its volume sustain all the way down)

The global swing get's greyed out once i map the LFO to it. It's moving but is not changing the swing at all. I tried mapping to the Tempo and it's the same problem. It's moving but also greyed out and is not changing the tempo.

      Couple more things that could be overriding the LFO -- make sure your project isn't synced to an external MIDI clock, make sure there are no clips set as the master tempo, try some different groove divisions to make sure the groove settings will have an effect on your MIDI sequence, and also try starting with a fresh Live set. There are quite a few variables so it could be hard to diagnose from here, but if you're around Sydney you're always welcome to drop by!

    Is that lfo device part of 9.7 suite?

    • @AbletonLiveschool

      Yes, it’s a max for live device, so you’ll need to download/install your max for live app then get the free pack: www.ableton.com/en/packs/max-live-essentials/

    How do you map the decay to the offset?

    • @Mxspn

      turn "map" (blue knob) in lfo plugin and after turn offset knob or decay(what you need)

    • @youngwhack
      @youngwhack 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can change the ADSR of the sample so that decay changes with midi note length (look up how). Then randomize release, velocity, and fine pitch a bit. Then you can add a bit of groove with claw machine in piano roll. Won't give you the same effect but play around and you can get some semi-realistic stuff

    • @ognjenpetrovic4693
      @ognjenpetrovic4693 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use Fl Studio 12 and the way I do this is by changing velocity in the MIDI, offsetting the time, automating the decay and attack of the sample, changing pitch, adding groove, you can do all that stuff in Fruity Loops too, just think about the stuff you learn, you wouldnt believe how much stuff i learned from tutorials just to find out that I had the knowledge needed for doing all that shit...Just experiment and dont give up

      Fl studio also has an lfo controller, called lfo peak controller which u can use to modulate different parameters similar to max for live lfo

      Give it a try - I'm seeing about 1% increase per LFO module. Admittedly haven't tried it in a full composition yet (and expecting far worse results there)!

  • @EnervatedSociety
    @EnervatedSociety 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a quick way to about it, but it's a bit random, the drummer sounds a little drunk. haha To get more realism, should you want to, for example: ideally the decay time should increase with higher velocities and decrease with lower velocities. Harder hit= more decay time. Lighter hit= less, wherever possible.
    I imagine you can work out the rest. ;)
    Cool vid.

    This "humanize" debate is mostly bogus.. the same problem or restriction existed when large Workstations (Korg Roland Circa 1999) came about - Producers and arrangers would have to move individual notes and or tracks to create that so called "human feel"
    Yet drum programming or the art of playing with rthym on a digital platform is not about "Humanizing" things. That is plain Hauntology and lack of imagination at best. We only have to listen to artists like Venetian Snares, Squarepusher and Aphex Twin to hear the progress and far-out possibilities of drum programming, sampling and drum-synthesis.
    These new self-styled producers are generally wasting their time recreating an old haunted ideas - that Hi-Hats or Snare or Bass Drum should be "Humanized" - Try make a character beat, groove or rhythm once. Try step outside the grid...
