Pure quality. Oscar is a true legend. I've been producing for 15 years and I'm still learning new things and getting new inspiration when watching his videos. Big up! This channel definitely needs more subscribers.
Nice tutorial. Months ago I tried to reverse engineer these 16th white noise hihat grooves myself and I ended up sidechain compressing the hats by the kick. That somehow resembles your level 2 groove. But I must admit that your method is better as it does not require a compressor and offers far more ways to modulate the groove. I love the syncopated groove. Will definitely switch to that.
When you have no inspiration for a “groove”, an interesting thing to do is use Velocity MIDI effect, put it to Fixed and random (between 20 and 100 for example), record a long time of hi hats then look for an interesting velocity pattern of 1, 2 or 4 bars
When you have no inspiration for a "groove" you're in the wrong game. If you don't groove, you don't get house and techno. Stop trying and stick to big room cheese.

Really appreciate that you focus on very specific sounds and ideas in each video, rather than doing full track tutorials. This helps me find and learn new tools to use without having to sit through hours of content that isn't relevent to what I'm trying to learn.

I'm becoming a big fan of these videos. Such clear and straight to the point demos of very handy techniques. I only use hardware and have learned loads, these skills are very easily transferable to gear. Thanks for such a good strong effort and treat yourself to a well earned pat on the back.
Only came across your channel yesterday and can honestly say you've got some of the most well explained, clear tutorials I've watched. Keep up the good work man.
Swing/Shuffle/Groove whatever you may call it is the process in which these measures: 2/16. 4/16 notes for every beat in a bar is moved slightly forward giving it the feel, triplets feel, of those notes being delayed. It this subtle delay that is so pleasing to the ears. If you want to funk that groove even more you can do this by using kick drum ghost notes on these measures to enhance the overall feel of the groove. if i recall correctly on a Akai MPC's the % for that perfect triplet swing was 60%. Thank you for this informative tutorial.
Just worked out that you can add all manner of effects to this, i.e. a resonator and can change the pitches to the root of the chord to get the hihats singing... pretty nice effect that I'll have to check to see if it works well in my new production. Plenty of ways to make variations on this. Brilliant tutorial.

I've never thought about adding macros to my hi hats. That's a really neat and expressive idea. I know that Guy from Disclosure always adds a delay to his Hi Hats which also adds sort of like invisible off the grid groove

I am a Metal guitar player. Always listened to Metal mainly, I compose it and i am a one Man only band. Suddenly, for no reason, a taste for dark minimal techno has arised, i can put all my musical knowledge into it, but i am missing a lot of method that is very characteristic to this genre, you have amazing content and you have been an absolute inspiration for my musical skills, keep the awesome job, and, if possible. making a video on some basic composing of minimal, or the beat variations that we can have in this genre would be brilliant. Amazing! Specially the polyrhythm velocity programing on the hats. I can also imagine layering with another sound to accent those specific notes.
