20 Minutes of Power-Off 180ºs in the Pattern before the Storms come in.

- Took the opportunity this afternoon to do some pattern work before the line of weather moved through The good thing about a poor TAF forecast is it usually means the pattern is empty and I have the local area all to myself. There is something therapautic about mindlessly doing touch & Go's until you get low on gas. When it warm out 99% of my approaches and basically power off 180ºs. In the winter I avoid this because of shock cooling but in the summer it's my preferred way to go. It's a lot of fun to challenge yourself to spot land on the numbers every time. Anyway, this is what a typical 20 minute outing in the Cub looks like if I have nothing to do and nowhere to go.

My journey begins....Randy's RETURN TO THE SKY...!😊
Brings back memories from 50 years ago when my Dad taught me that in our J3. Great practice for an engine failure! Thanks Joe!
My pleasure!
Great session. Many years ago when my Dad taught me to fly, when we'd go out and just do pattern work, I didn't understand why we did so much. Later it all became clear and I was greatful for all that time.
Same when we got into slow flying. As with any practice, the more you do it, the more it all becomes second nature, and you just instinctively do the right thing and never think about it.
It's great watching your flying, and seeing that beautiful J3.
God bless y'all and stay safe out there in the wild blue.
Thank you! And I 100% agree, there is always value in regular old pattern work!
Love the commentary on the deer 😂! We experience those also along with feral hogs and cows at XS24. Low passes prior to landing at Cherry International are a must!! Love your content brotha
Thanks Shaye! I think I asked but you going to Osh?
Good practice, good job. Liked getting the carb heat off with your foot.
Love it.. Can't sneeze at any of those touches. Beautiful scene as well.
This is an example of where they penned the phrase "Living the dream" from. Thanks for the ride. Until next time, Safe flights
Dang! I know your plane floats, but you have some brass ones doing power off 180s in a slip over power lines. goes to show airspeed is king!
It's the Cub. It's just so easy and fun to fly.
Ha….I didn’t even know this was a “thing”? This is how I was taught to land every time.
I consider any landing a failure if I have to add power to make it.
Love videos. Awesome channel!
Thanks!
That looks so damn fun.
It really is.
Beautiful flying.
Many thanks!
Flying W! My home airport. Working on my private. I am pretty sure I have seen your taildragger there.
Good stuff! Thanks
I've been here since 300 subs👌 ur duing great🤑🤑🤑
I appreciate it!
Can you explain what you are doing reaching into the front near your right foot? Seemed like you did it before each landing, I'm just curious.
Sure, That’s the Carburetor Heat. It’s just easier to turn it off with my foot. I’m pretty lazy 😂
@@Bananasssssssss I wouldn't call that lazy, I'd tell the passenger to do it, haha
How is the in flight intercom for communication with a passenger? I recently flew in a J3 Cub and it was so hard to hear instruction from my flight instructor. I came to my first lesson with a brand new Dave Clark headset as well.
Its not the greatest but I find leaving the squelch at the point where its always a “hot Miic”. Makes it a tar better
I’m about to get my cpl and never flew a taildragger, I hope to fly one someday!
Lotta fun! It will make you a better pilot
@@Bananasssssssss thanks Sir, could you give me any tip for the career?
Good morning, excellent flight.
How much gasoline will I spend to make these 20 minutes of flight?
About 2.5 Gallons! Pretty good deal!
@@Bananasssssssss Best money ever spent!
@clipwingcub 100%!
This might be a very odd question. Is there any type of training regarding tail wind power off landings ? Example low altitude lose power and dont have time to face the right direction.
Actually a really good question. I teach tailwind landings for that reason. Also, there are airports out there that have short runways and obstacles on one end so makes sense to maybe land with a tailwind. Its great practice for numerous reasons
@@BananasssssssssThanks for the response.
Yep def a brick, now watch that glide in the chief!!!
What is “Shock cooling” in the winter?
Quickly bringing the throttle to idle
Whatever you do make your radio calls so fast no one in the area knows where you're talking about. And never say the field name before and after the call.
I don’t understand what you’re saying? Never say the field name before and after? What?
