Impressed that they didn't break character. You can tell Will Ferrel was really trying to break their character, much like an actual drill sergeant
David did
@@pedrorojas0116 Spade sucks and he nearly ruined this skit
David didn't break character, he was supposed to be the one laughing.
@@asmrcritique6565 how did he pretty much almost ruin the skit? For "breaking"? Is that a turn off for you? Because i love it when they break, its funny. If you think someone breaking ruins the skit, then I'm sorry you cant find joy in life like, seriously? Get over yourself.
@@slayridah his name is ... BIGGUS DiCKUS!!!
"Permission to...hug you, sir."
"Permission granted."
That's a gem😅
Those lines felt unscripted, which made it even more funnier! You can see in Ferrell’s face reaction.
That's a black adder line from the 70s
I seriously think David Spade did it to tell him something out if character a’la The Three Stooges huddle.
David's little moan when he let go "huhn...ooo..."
“I chose to match my anxiety with giggles”

Lets see you giggle when he put it up the wrong hole!

Mask, not match
He said Mask..
“You still think this is a gigglefest, private son of a BITCH?!?!”🤣

that's gotta be top 10 line in SNL history

The 90's was an awesome time for SNL Carvey, Myers, Sandler, Farley, Spade, Hartman, Nealon, MacDonald, Farrell. All SNL legends.
today's snl is amazing.
Wasn’t labeuf also in the 90’s snl thing, he was pretty good

Maybe if he stopped yelling at his girl, something might happen.
I love that everything in this has happened in basic training barracks. From the drill sergeant hat brim hitting your face to this fool asking the platoon for advice, I've legit seen this happen
Ohhhhh, never answer the DS or TI questions.......its a trap!
I'll bet you never saw a DS wear their campaign hat like a park ranger though
Hell yea, this is actually extremely accurate. Our MTI was going through a divorce during basic, so this isn’t too far off
I still remember basic at Ft. Knox.
Drill Sergeant Blandford was something else.
I remember boot camp well. This happens. We are family. We are one.
3:31 he breaks after "PRIVATE CANDY ASS" and has a hard time holding himself together for the rest of his speech
He kept hitting him with the rim of his hat lol
This is a great comedy exercise😆lol
Spade is by far the worst actor ever to appear on an SNL skit...
he broke at like the beginning of the scene lmao
That was my favorite jab !
3:12 I love that you can pinpoint the moment where Spade realizes he can get Will Ferrell's face out of his by leaning into it 🤣
When he tells you to do 20 and he only does 6 half ass push-ups

When Will starts stabbing his hat into Spade’s head during his little speech, that’s when I lose it the most lol

I was trying to pretend being one of them but I couldn't resist that part 😂😂
What a legendary scene. Will Ferrell, Tracy Morgan, Chris Parnell, David Spade, and Tim Meadows. Absolute comedy geniuses every one of them. And the way he kept poking Spade with his hat 😂😂😂
Will Ferrell is a stone cold comedian! He never breaks character, incredible😎
almost never even had to read the cue cards

These oldies are truly gold, the part where he put his mouth close to dave's face and swore plus the cap banging was pure genius

Heh
I loved that one but "private son of a bitch" I found funnier.
Imagine Fallon in this scene
He would’ve break character before he even reads the script
@@gamerxd6149 he would ruin the whole damn scene by being in it
Private horses-ass
This is both one of the funniest and sweetest SNL skits I’ve seen, and so many great comedic talents
I love how Will gets his lips as close as he can to the others, you know he's trying to break them out of character for laughs, brilliant!
Will knocking into David's cap repeatedly with his hat was hilarious
funniest thing since I need more cowbell!
I got hit on the bridge of my nose by the rim of a DI's cover and it felt like being punched.
Well, tapping a private on the head with the rim of the 'brown round' is a method for motivating the private into understanding the point being demonstrated by the DS. This is also accompanied by the knife hand and individual performance readiness aka the pushup.
That's how you know he cared about his job.
what what ..... anyone who has served thinks this is the dumbest shit ever. All kinda shit jacked up in this skit. Atleast make it look a little like the military
Spade was genuinely cracking up. No way he was still in character 🤣🤣🤣🤣
For some reason i just can't understand how adorable David Spade's voice is in this sketch. He sounds like a sweet little puppy being disciplined for something he did wrong. How cute!
The fact that Will, Tracy, or Tim haven’t aged much in 23 years is insane
Don’t know what you talking about, they look old as shit now.
I am in tears, this is so funny! I graduated basic training in 98 when the Corps had Corps Values training and our DIs were supposed to be more fatherly than hard during the classes. None of them knew how to really do the classes without being aggressive so it was a lot of awkward silence when it came to us recruits participating. During a class on what to do when a fellow Marine is stealing and the theft is hurting everyone, the DI said, "This touchy feely stuff is garbage. Good to GO?!! So do what every other Marine does who doesn't want to have feelings and stuff them with the 6 beers you are allowed to keep in your barracks fridge!" One of the recruits chimed up, "6 beers is a warm up sir!" After the laughter subsided the DI replied: "That is why the package store is exactly one litre away from the barracks."
The hug with that little sound 😂😂😂
The fact Will Ferrell didn't break character when he keep hitting Spade with his hat is unbelievable
Will Ferrell cussing is probably the best thing in this world, along with Jim Carrey's acting
MOM! THE MEATLOAF!! WHAT THE FUCK?!
Right up there with whenever Farley would say “by gad”

@American Patriot I've read so many comments about how hot he was, and still is, but he was so far a below average looking guy and a terrible actor!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I died right there.. goodbye world
I love the little giggle David does all the way through his speech😂
That "Private S.o.b." gets me every damn time! 😂
for a moment I thought Spade years on SNL had overlap with Will Ferrel, but he was just hosting on 98
@Steve Joens Spade and Ferrell overlapped for one season, but Spade I think literally was in like 3 sketches that whole year. The rest of the time he just did his Spade in America segment.
It took me like half the video to realize that David Spade was their
Somehow Spade was kept on with Meadows and featured player in 95 Molly Shannon in the 94-95 season after the rest of cast was fired.. His Hollywood Minute segment became Spade In America. He chose to leave after 95-96 and did Just Shoot Me for NBC which debuted in 97. He also branched out to movies. 96 did Tommy Boy.
@@alanvallazza9781 --- Spade knew his movie career was over when Farley died in December 1997
They did overlap. Will joined in 95. Spade left after the 96 season. The more you know 🤯
Hahaha the part where Will bumps into David has to be improvised
David was doing everything he could to keep it together, too. LOL
Yes, and... Will kept doing it intentionally to makes David break. Both him cracking up and the repetition are funny to the audience.

"Private son of a bit*#!" I cracked up at that point 👍 they are true professionals keeping it together being that close
Tim meadows is so underrated in all of these old clips, great actor and super funny, and I’m sure he could be in the actual military the way he didn’t break

I am amazed how good Will Ferrell is at being a drill sergeant he would fit in great in the army
I MISS Tim Meadows! He was the best! I really thought his career would have taken off after he left SNL. Very sad to see his immense talent is not being used. What a national treasure he is.
This message has been approved by Tim Meadows

Meadows was the best straight man on SNL... always did it perfectly
Immense talent???
He was very funny
I honestly don't think the drill sergeant got physically close enough to those folks for them to hear him clearly.
hooah

yeah. he didn't swap enough spit with 'em either... LOL
They don't, they did in this clip to show the gayness of the show.
He also failed to empty their footlockers and throw their shit everywhere in a massive rage and then make them run outside and run in circles through clouds of sand fleas.
"what have we got here...a talking horse's ass" 😂 dead
I love how David spade is trying not to laugh the whole time. One of the funniest things SNL ever did.
David spade Looks like tiny Steve rodgers.
@Heather Pequeno Steve Austin was 6 million dollar man. Maybe you're thinking of Buck Rodgers ?😂
@@joet5091 Steve Rogers = Captain America
Guys, nobody cares if they got all the military regulations wrong in this. Its just a show. They are ACTING. Calm down. Its just a quick scene to laugh at. Chill.
That is true...
That's a pretty big one to miss tho man, of course people are going to comment on it.
That's way easier said than done. And I know it sounds ridiculous but you would never understand unless you have been through it. This is when SNL was funny. I probably would have enjoyed it more before I went to the army. I clicked this video with the intentions of sharing it on my FB and tagging my drill sgt, but I kept cringing at everything wrong. That mental conditioning we as service members go through is real. We all still have our sense of humor (most are corny af) but no soldier, good or bad, can just ignore and get over this. And I'm not even a serious soldier. There are guys that want to be great soldiers. I'm just a guy trying to get school paid for. I understand what you are saying but it's not as easy you think.
@@ArcherPain I agree with you 100. I cringed once I saw David Spade had his PC on inside and proper callouts for the DS
They purposly do it wrong. Just like in the movies. It's true!
That drill sergeant has the absolute worst social distancing practices.
Lol. These times.
Spade is the worst offender.
The army does not serve coughy. It serves whoop ass.
@@lancelove9700 Just left Harmony Church, Ft. Bennning. They enforce social distancing.
His spit went right into his mouth. 2:51
One of my favorite parts, in terms of accuracy, is when the drill sergeant left the room and came back and said, "I did not say at ease". That happened so many times when I was at basic
Spade would have been in deep trouble he has his cover on indoors
Give it up for the Reagle Beagle shout out at 1:15 (long live Threes company) 😁

Yup 😁
I caught that too. Makes me wonder how much of this skit was improved.
Ok🤣
“Look what we have here, a talking horses ass” 😂😂
“Private horses ass”
“Private son a bxtch”

Honestly, that hat thing? I could totally see one of my drill sergeants doing that
It definitely happens
Y'all get phones in basic?
"Could see it happen"... literally every drill sergeant I saw did that shit lmao
@nietzsche shut up libtard
@@Andytlp They are, unfortunately. I got out of training some months ago in May and I must say, compared to how my uncles, father and cousin described it in the 80's and prior, it has really softened. Not to say that it is incredibly easy, but co-ed platoons and college boy captains really hurt the quality and rigor of the training, and the Army has suffered for it. What's more is it will get even worse once the older generations have moved on. It's truly disgusting that not even our military is safe from the toxic pathogen known as liberalism.
Everybody else: discussing the humor of this scene
Me: If you look past all the cursing and yelling, the sergeant is actually very sweet
Lol. Most drill sergeants are great guys and gals. They only yell to break you down so they can build you up.
"Private Sonuvabich!" 🤣
You could tell David Spade couldn't help but laugh off script.😂
Hard to blame him. I'm amazed Will didn't crack at that.
I don’t think will was supposed to bump him that many times with his hat.
Yeah, these guys are such great comedians
It’s bcz spade is overrated and below avg comedian
The writing in this sketch is phenomenal.
"Private Horse's ASS!" OMG, classic Will Ferell / David Spade & all at their best! I was feeling a little down tonight, but watching this skit just turned that around.
Can we just take a second to look back and see how long snl has been on air?? Truly amazing
LOL...the Regal Beagle...a little Three's Company throwback hehe
Parnell never breaks character. One of the greats.
10 years later, and some still say Private Candyass giggles at everything
Hey thats the dude that was eating at chilis with michael scott and jan
He’s in a lot of stuff my guy. Also Stanley can be seen in an episode of That 70s Show as a janitor if I recall correctly.
Timmy Meadows? He was legendary with the 90’s snl cast. He was extremely tight with Spade, Farley, and Sandler.
His drill Sargent became the boss for a short time too!
I want my baby back baby back baby back
Angelo Pellicci that’s Deangelo Vickers as well, guess you didn’t recognize him without the juggling balls
Private sonovabitch, im deeeeeed

That was the best part!
This...this is why Will Ferrell is a legend.
Holy crap, that was one of the best skits I’ve ever seen! I may sound like one of the stereotypical people that claim that older SNL episodes are much better than anything that has been on the air over the last decade or more, but this particular skit seems to prove my point
"Do you think we're having a comfortable conversation over a couple of beers at the Regal Begal???" OMG, Im weak af 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, underrated line that should've gotten a bigger laugh.
Perhaps there weren't enough _Three's Company_ fans in the audience, or they were too young, so it went over their heads. 😩😄
Regal Beagle is OLD SCHOOL
Haha! Will's voice keeps cracking
i swear will ferrell just wants to give his soldiers a lil smooch on the lips
He loves them very much.
Lol
3:35 I like how will is constantly bobbing his hat against David Spade's head.
I might be as sensitive as drill sergeant cause I got a little emotional when he came back and told them he loved them very much 😥
my TI would come back into our bay and yell out "GOODNIGHT!!" at end of day, but only to call for trainee Goodnight. He would chew out anyone who took it as a personal good night or responded.
h2ojr1 Nice TI
The way he was poking David Spade with his hat was so funny..I would have start busting out laughing if I was him
You know the sketch is good when professional actors can't keep from laughing
OK... I watched this skit more than 10 times over the last couple of years, and gets better every time 😂
As a US Marine I can say, this is totally accurate. Lol

I love the part where Ferrell is bumping his hat into spades forehead.
The fact that he told them he loves them very much at the end means he's starting to overcome his insecurities around being vulnerable.

David spades lil noise when hugging will was priceless 💀
Chris Farley and Will Ferrell are the only ones who can get my face beat red. I think it’s because they don’t even crack a smile when they’re being funny. They’re so serious and it’s hilarious.
If they had a book of some of the hilarious things my drill sergeants could come up with on the fly-tempting us to break our military bearing. My favorite was one drill sergeant commenting that a recruit's head looked like "a half-sucked peanut M&M".

Hi
“Private Oprah!!” Lmao Idk how many times I’ve watched this.
Don't ask, don't tell sir. Lmao
Funny thing is, they do actually do that bumping you with the hat shit sometimes. Years ago, they used to actually put little metal rings around the brim to make it hurt when they hit the bridge of your nose.
Eric D funnier thing is a drill instructor I worked with got it trouble for thumping a tall kid in the chest with the brim of his Smokey and we both got in trouble. Him for doing it and me for not saying anything. Thirty days away from the platoon.
Lmao. I mean come on. It's the Military. A little knocking some pain into the soldiers shouldn't be against the rules.
Welcome to the new, "sensitive" military. Feelings matter. *sigh*
