I have the Sennelier Paynes grey and the Winsor Newton. Sennelier is more neutral, but I do like the WN, it's more bluish tone mixes really good dark greens with Cad or Indian yellow and great dropped wet in wet into green foliage to create smooth darker tone and shadows. Senelier tends to brown out with Cad yellow, creating dull olive greens . Placed wet in wet to a transparent green like Sap, Senelier PG appears to show up its black content more, just like dropping in say an ivory black. I have now moved on to Perylene green for this function and appreciate the Sennelier Paynes grey as a general purpose neutral - sometimes with a touch of Burnt Sienna to vary its warmth.

Out of these three my favourite is the DS one, it has such a nice indigo touch.
I'll put it on my wishlist ~sigh~
Before I buy even more colours I firstly need to practice my drawing, uhm, skills ;)
I'm a big fan of being confident on basics before moving on ;)
But gosh, this colour is really gorgeous....
Would love to see a video on color mixing with payne's gray! That blue undertone is really interesting.
I think Payne‘s grey is one of my favorites... recently it started to remind me a lot of indigo. Today i tried to do a little comparison of two of them, but I should probably use more brands for a nice comparison. Also Schmincke has a super bluish Payne‘s grey, which is just lovely. Some call Payne’s grey the devil, but I completely love it.

Love Paynes grey. Funny you came out with this video today as I just got done mixing paynes grey with all my blue paints. Doing a color swatchbook and I came up with some very interesting shades of blues using paynes grey.

Wow the Senellier's one is beautiful!
its amazing how the different paints have different effects once put on paper, I also like the textures that have more of rock like formation. the payne's gray with blue tones is very nice.

Really enjoyed this. I knew Blockx had a great reputation in oils, glad not to add it to my watercolor wish list. Love seeing the DS painting. Really beautiful. So many graceful notes compared to black.
I have QoR's and it's incredibly pigmented which took me a long time to get used to! Lots of unintentional dark spots. It looks similar to Daniel Smith's.
I love using payne's grey,sometimes i use it for black. The senellier grey looks like the kind of payne's grey i look to use,but comparing the daniel smith (in relation to the screen of my tablet because the colors may appear differntly in reality) looks similar to my holbein one.i might purchase the senellier one.thanks teoh!Very well thought out and informative video. :3

Thanks Teoh, this comparison is very interesting. I use this mini Waterbox when I paint on a trip and I love french brand Sennelier very much. Honey - based pigments make the colors more bright.
I find the gray of Payne of your example a good proof of the quality.
It's lovely to know you are not using sable brush, but a cruelty free one... They are very good these days!

I like that the sennelier doesn't granulate. I don't want texture in my sky. Paynes Grey is such a perfect colour for skies.

Esther Sugai I have the same question for Teoh: what's the difference or situations in which you would use Payne's Grey versus Neutral tint? Both mix to create similar muted colors. I'd like to learn more about how these two colors compare so I can decide which to include in a palette. TIA!
Thank you for sharing this. It's amazing I have been working on a Daniel Smith palette this August. Tomorrow morning (the 31st) is my last run to get colors. I was totally on the fence about getting the Paynes gray, because I have moon glow and bloodstone as well as, the neutral tint from DS. After seeing this, I really want the DS Paynes Gray. Thank your for such a timely (for me) and educational demonstration to Payne's Gray. Since you did the painting in DS Payne's Gray can we assume that you prefer DS's? lol
I do prefer DS version because it looks "more true" to what I have in mind for Payne's Gray

I get a great warmish concrete-like gray color when I mix Payne's Gray with Sepia (both W&N prof). Too bad I can't post a picture example here! I want to recreate the color with Daniel Smith paint, but first I have to do some pigment research, I think ;-)
I think that some paint manufacturers have now come out with a Payne's Gray, blue shade. I wondered whether all Bloxx colors are that hard to activate? Would warm/hot water help? I guess that might wreck your brushes though.
Some Blockx colours dry hard. But thanks for the tip, I'll try warm water and see what happens
The Daniel Smith one is my favorite. I have trouble finding a Paynes Grey in gouache. Any recommendations?
Mind making a video about the basics of taking care of fountain pens? I'm interested in them but am worried about not taking good care of them.
The general tip is to wash them if you don't plan on using them for a long time.
If you use fountain pens frequently, you can wash them every couple of weeks, maybe 3-4 weeks.
The blocke one would be great for rocks a d stonework on buildings
Since Daniel Smith's Payne's Gray is Black+Ultramarine, and Sepia is Black+Burnt Umber, will mixing them make an interesting black/gray?
