You cherish your remaining sap green 😍 haha. Daniel Smith's new formula is still my favorite version of sap green available after trying so many others, but anyhoo... Great selection!
I'm down to my last drop of Sap Green. Hopefully the new formula looks the same.
I definitely go through Ultramarine Blue very quickly. Also Payne's grey becuase it's really easy to do monotone paintings with payne's grey.
I agree with all these colors!! You’re lucky to have some original sap green!

I'm using up my Sap Green on my pallet in favor of Green Apatite Genuine. I LOVE the granulation. The other three are my favorites, too.
This is really useful. I will probably take the plunge soon and get my first watercolour set (since I was a kid, when I had one but didn't know how to use it), so watching this video has definitely helped.

Don't use too many colours. Check out the Limited Colour palette videos and you'll realise you don't need that many colours.
Yes, that's so true. As a beginner I tried to use too many of them. Right now I am working to figure out which few colors I like most together.

My most used DS colours are Alizarin Crimson, Quinacridone Gold, Ultramarine Blue and some Burnt Sienna (when I first heard that Quin Gold was about to change formulation I quickly bought up about five tubes of current stock). I mix my greens. The only tube green I (occasionally) use is DS Phthalo Green.
No wonder Quin Gold went out of stock faster than usual 😂

I love New Gamboge as well, French ultramarine is also on every pallet I use. But indigo is one I really really enjoy. I try and stick to single pigment colors when ever possible

Burnt umber (though same reason I think); ultramarine blue and sap green (also the same reason), and yellow ochre (the buildings here, in the Southwest US are often made of adobe (mud) brick and yellow ochre and I paint them mixed with reds or browns depending. Also plants here are desert plants which are often some ochre colored and green. Probably use up sap green the fastest.
The colors I go through most are hematite genuine, for shadows and the strong texture, Ultramarine for mixing, piemontite genuine because of mixes and its stand alone color, and nickel azo yellow by qor because it is my go to yellow. The reds I use are very intense so I don't go through them very quickly. I used to go through my tube of transparent pyrol orange but I wanted to force myself to mix more often so I am holding off using it.
Lovely video once again! Can't beat that granulation from ultramarine, so beautiful. For me I seem to be attracted towards colder colours in general as my palette always ends up with a dent in cyan blues, lemon yellow and quin magenta first!

1 Ultramarine deep for Greys and shadows.
2 Brown oker light for dry grass and to warm up a color.
3 envfriendly red iron oxide i use IT for mixing earty oranges and Greys with Ultramarine.
4 cerulian mixt with Ultramarine for the sky and makes beautyful green with raw umber by schmicke

i kinda expected transp pyrrol orange to be there haha. my most used colors are quin gold, pyrrol scarlet, perylene green, and raw umber. pyrrol scarlet i can live without, but the other three, I HAVE to have them in my palette.
I love Transparent Pyrrol Orange. But I need to use up my other paint before I switch to using it. Or else my paint tubes will never get used up

Yasmine S. I love Daniel smith although I agree sometimes it can be too grainy. I still love the strength of the colors. I used to use Schmincke only but switched because Daniel Smith is the best I can buy locally.
I go through ultramarine at an alarming rate. Second to that is raw sienna, new gambogue and cerulean blue. I hardly ever empty my red pans.
Ultramarine is just such a wonderful mixing colour!

You showcased these colors so well, I now wish for them! So sad about the PO49, i usually steer towards 6, 3 cool primaries and 3 warms and you can get anything from them.
Awesome video! Always nice to see what do other people reach for. For me personally, ultramarine deep or phthalo blue (rs) depending on whether I want granulation or not, burnt sienna, transparent red oxide and yellow ochre.
When I first saw ultramarine back when I was a beginner, I was like "that's a very intense blue. I don't think I want that *weird* blue". Hoo boy, I freaking love any ultramarine. I also use Burnt Sienna. For yellow, I don't really think about it that much (as long as it's not cadmium yellow). Also Sap Green is a must. And I will add PV19's Quinacridone Red.
Actually daniel smith's burnt sienna made me so confused. To me, the color what W&N shows is more like burnt sienna and it is what i consider as burnt sienna. I like earth colors very much and i consider them as most important priority colors in my palette. So I bought some special earth colors and basic earth colors from Daniel Smith.
the problem happened when i used burnt sienna. It was so different with what i have considered as burnt sienna so far. and even I doubted wrong color was in Burnt Sienna tube. It looks like caput mortuum or light indian red or very close to maroon.
Dear Teoh, Can you recommend me what color in daniel smith looks like the W&N's burnt sienna?
I casually buy some burnt sienna look-alike colors in Daniel Smith range. but never succeeded.
(btw, don't want W&N because it melts in water hardly so when i mix it with Daniel smith colors, I found, the mixed colors appear on paper separately.)
The Daniel Smith colour that looks closest is probably Transparent Brown Oxide or Transparent Red Oxide, both PR101, same pigment code as WN Burnt Sienna. You should do more research on them, maybe check out Jane Blundell colour charts

I already have Transparent Brown Oxide. I like that color. I'm using it for its own use. not for burnt sienna. (and I prefer PBr7 Burnt Sienna. Am I too particular in choice? I'm sorry) Though I always check jane blundell's color chart, but finding burnt sienna what i expect is difficult. T_T

Do you happen to know Sennelier's burnt sienna? made of pigment PBr7 and the color looks similar what i expect. But I can't find the color performance video of it on youtube.
I've never tried sennelier and am wondering whether it melts well in water so that blends well with Daniel Smith.
@@rautentor6206 You can probably find Sennelier's colour chart online. I've not used their Burnt Sienna before so I don't know how it looks like. But watercolour from different brands usually can work together without issues.
rauten tor Daniel Smith’s burnt sienna light is pretty similar to W&N’s burnt sienna. Another color from Daniel Smith that is pretty similar would be their transparent red oxide, which uses the same pigment as W&N’s burnt sienna.
I love phtalo blue and phtalo green cadmium yellow and payne's gray!
It's good to work a limited palette when good paint is $10/tube. So expensive!
Why do some paints damage the cap on the tube to the point that the cab is eroded. My DS Cobalt Blue was almost completely dried out because the top of the cap was pushed off and the cap was cracked. DS paints are far too expensive to be ruined. This tube was about 10 years old but barely used in a drawer in a room that is kept between 65 and 75 degrees year round. Is a shelf life of 10 years too much to expect? I had opened the tube only 2 or 3 times and wiped the cap very carefully before closing the tube.
Not sure about that.
Right now I think it would be Rembrandt's Payne's Grey, Olive Green, Indanthrene Blue and DS Quin Gold. I paint a lot of landscapes so the earthy greens I can get from these get used a lot. Most used is probably Payne's Grey though. I love it so much I use it in almost every painting! And for some reason I don't like French Ultramarine much.
What do you mix with Paynes Gray?
It makes some lovely greens with the brighter yellows and it's perfect for stormy skies, fog and to tone down any colour without having to mix a neutral every time. Good for shadows in general, since it's a bit bluish from the start. Perfect autumn minimal palette for me is Burnt Sienna (the PBr7 kind), Yellow Ochre and Payne's Grey!
Hi Teoh, I know I've seen a tube of DS Italian Burnt Sienna in your other videos. Do you have a preference between the regular or Italian?
Italian Burnt Sienna seems slightly weaker in value, .e.g. lighter. So I'm going back to the normal Burnt Sienna.

You have talked about loving viridian, but finding that it turns into a rock in your palette. What about Holbein and Daniel Smith brands? In contrast to other brands, I find they dry quite well. Also, I’m surprised you don’t mention Holbein paints more often - they are lovely. Finally, when next time you show the Portable Palette, you might point out that with the water holders it’s intended to sit on your knee, leaving both hands free. And also if you are using a paint with a thumb holder, you might demonstrate that - another way of keeping more hands free.
I have Holbein but have not started using. I've too many paint I have to finish using before I start using a new brand.

A quite cheap but really good quality box set is the winston and newton cotman 12 colors set, got mine for 13€. Colors are really good except the chinese white that is not so usefull, and the box is very handy. Teoh used the same box for a quite long time ;)
I have so much trouble getting a very dark - almost black colour with my W N set - now I know why! I think I may invest in some D S colours :)
I had zero idea that WN and DS burnt sienna were so different... I know that paints have no standard between companies but those two are like night and day.
Different companies may use different pigments for colours with the same name. That's why some colours look different even if they have the same name.
What red do you usually use? This is an excellent video.
Currently Quinacridone Red.
Which brand of burnt sienna do you find you use mostly?
PBr 7 or PR 101 pigments. I'm fine with either version of Burnt Sienna.

which one do you prefer the daniel smith burnt sienna (PBr7) or winsor & newton BS (PR101)? and have you tried daniel smiths English Red Ochre? it is made out of PR101 just like W&N BS.... I wonder how they differ.
I might prefer Daniel Smith version a bit more but I don’t mind WN PR101 too. Some colours will use the same pigment but treated differently to get different colours. PR101 is one. There’s also many different Pbr7 and PV19
