Today, we are exploring Payne's Grey and the numerous brands that not only offer this color, but the variety and depth of pigments they use to create it! In this comparison video, we have 7 watercolor brands, including Holbein, Van Gogh, Daniel Smith and more. What is your favorite brand for Payne's Grey?
Again, a special thank you to Marcie for sending me so many samples so that I can add even more brands to these comparisons!

From your swatches, I love the Daniel Smith and Van Gogh ones the best. I've used QoR's Payne's Grey for YEARS and I have never had any problems with it rewetting or being anything but perfect, so it's really strange you had trouble with it.

Yeah and the girl who sent it to me had even swatched them after they dried it was weird it just wasn't re-wetting or picking up pigment on the brush and was coming out very washed out and I knew that wasn't the color so I had to omit it

For me I love the blue leaning of the Daniel Smith and I like the slight blue-green leaning of the Roman Szmall

Das originale Paynes gray war eine nicht lichtechte Mischung aus Preußischblau, Zinnoberrot und gelber Ocker. Es ergibt ein helleres natürliches Grau, perfekt für Schatten und Himmel.

I have four or five different Payne’s Greys and I use them depending on what mood I’m in. I love that they are all a bit different

Daniel Smith's Jane's Grey would have been interesting to include. It is a convenience mix from Jane Blundell (but seriously, is made of pigments most people already mix) of Payne's grey of Pbr7 and PB29. I love it because I just find black pigments so "flat." And it makes it easy to shift the grey quickly if you have ultramarine and burnt sienna on your palette.

I'm definitely trying my best to include as many brands as I can, but right now I can justify buying tubes of every single brand -- wish I could, but as I'm sure you can imagine, that would be expensive for every video :(

I think the Schmincke Payne’s grey bluish would be the better comparison with the other brands, since it is the blue color you are going for instead of a grey. Isaro makes a beautiful version that also granulates. Thanks for the video!

I only have three tubes of Isaro. I enjoy them. Wish they had a dot card set.

Honestly it's really hard to pick a favorite 😅😅 I'm loving holbein's version with pr122, but I love daniel smith's bluish tone and I love that roman szmal's is more cool leaning than the others, even sennelie's version is so pretty! I think schmincke has a blue version of Payne's grey which is so gorgeous as well.

I'll have to see if I can find their blue shade one. It is just such a unique, fun color and so cool how many companies create a unique blend.

The Roman Szmal is almost like indigo. I like the Daniel Smith and Van Gogh. You didn't have Winsor Newton in this trial but it's listed as PB15-Phthalo Blue, PV1i Quin Violet and PBk6 Lamp black.
I think years ago it was made of PB29 and Pbk6.

Yea I can only include what I have adequate samples of and I need more W&N it seems

That is so strange that the QoR won't reactivate! I checked my half pan, poured from the same tube that I used for your quarter pan, and it reactivated almost instantly. No issues at all. I hope the other QoR samples I sent will be OK!

The others are. This one just didn't want to mix up. It was the oddest thing but don't you worry!
