    The d-pad fell out of my second Master System controler back in the day, the little plastic ridges that held it in perished and snapped off. I replaced it with a little flat piece of plastic that we used to use for vacuum forming at school.
    Worked like a charm! 👍

    Welcome back! Hope your neighbour gives you some peace soon. :)
    I never understood the complaints about the Master System d-pad as all of my controllers had a very similar internal mechanism to the NES one, albeit with the square insert (for that matter, if the rubber membrane wears out a NES one is a direct replacement!) This included an early version that had the screw hole for the joystick cap (which I'm sadly missing).
    It was only recently when I bought a lot of faulty controllers when I discovered the other design with the bit of foam to keep everything in place and they are pretty awful in comparison. :( I was able to repair one controller by cutting a new foam insert out of a kitchen diswashing sponge, but it still doesn't feel nearly as good as the other design.

    • @segahead660
      @segahead660  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know what you mean about the foam, it really is a lucky dip when buying a SMS controller :(

    The Hori SG Commander is hard to beat. It released under Hori in Japan and it has a much shorter plug and unusual looking connector. In Europe Sega released the Hori SG Commander under the Sega Brand with a nice long cord. In terms of functionality they are both the same controller.
    I threw a new dpad conductive pad in my own SG commander and it plays so much better. It was either an Nes or Snes conductive pad.
    I picked up a new old stock competition pro controller recently, but I haven't had the heart to open it. It feels like such a waste to open a new one when I'm already so content with the SG Commander. The Competition Pro is really tough to find here in the states. Importing one usually means shipping that is double or more likely triple the cost of the controller.

    • @segahead660
      @segahead660  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah shipping costs suck, I'm lucky to have friends in the USA who are willing to help out and vice versa but because of shipping we never send over individual items, wait till theres a handful of things.
      So your controller is a sealed one? ooh I dunno if I could open it lol

    I recently got an SJ-150 and thought I was close to having all the Sega 8 bit released controllers. Didn't know about the 151...
    Still need an SJ-200 but those are costly.
    I don't have any of those off-brand controllers but if the price was right I would jump on getting them. Would also love to get a Korean system.
    They made some interesting controllers, wheels, sports pad, and other ways to control games across the 8-bit cycle.

      @@segahead660 that's what I figured.
      I found a very good mega drive knockoff controller, but it's for NES clones. It was a buck a piece so I bought 5 lmao.
      It feels better than any of the other knockoffs I got for my Master System 3, but the boards are different, so I can't just swap the guts.
      I think I'll instead mod it for the correct wiring.

    I wish someone just made really good 3rd party SMS controllers. Retrobit makes the six button Genesis/Mega Drive controller for 15 bucks, but that only sometimes works with SMS games. Perhaps it's too niche.

    Ugh--that SG controller looks so uncomfortable. Joystick over D-pad...cord from the side. The size of a joy-con it seems--no thanks.

    The D-Pad on all of my master system controllers is broken, it literally comes off, like the glue that was supposed to keep it in place just gave up after a bit. Though in reality it was probably after a few years, but it's odd they all had that same defect. I think I used a competition pro joystick on my master system for shmups, it was made for the Amiga or the C64, but it was the same port, meaning I also used master system controllers on the Amiga - I couldn't play "Yo! Joe!" without it. I was a privileged child, with asperger, so a shut-in and introverted, so I also had a NES and preferred that controller :)
