  • Tim Jenkin was involved in the underground anti-apartheid struggle in the late 1970s. After being active for two and a half years, he was arrested in 1978 and sentenced to 12 years in prison. After 18 months in Pretoria Prison he escaped with two others.
This is a documentary of their dramatic escape aired by National Geographic Channel in June 2013. It appeared as an episode of the National Geographic Breakout series.

One thing i didnt understand was if you were 3 people and this guy was alone why didnt you consider taking him down and tieing him up? I get the impression you want to be peaceful but forcing a man to the ground and tieing up his hands is not the most violent thing you can do.
With regards to Rowlett's comment. The concept of "getting rid of "oppression" is unrealistic. With capitalism, Political power and the dysfunctional nature of humanity there is no chance of any achievement like that. Also i would say the South Africa that was built up in the 19th and 20th centuries was constructed and run with the european mindset and ethos. Yes when mandela came to power racism in the police and politicians decreased but if you watch the 1994 election debate between mandela and deklerk. deklerk said some of the violence was black on black. He saw the potential for anarchy. Sure you cant stop the will of millions of people but pretending everything post-apartheid was a success and picture perfect is not realistic. Many whites had to escape South Africa afterwards. Seems like somebody in the end has to lose out whatever scenario. i have no family or ties to anyone in south africa so i consider my opinion a neutral outsider's opinion

Mr Tim Jenkin, I just read your book and i`d like to say that it`s the most amazing i`ve read thus far in my life.. All i have to say is that I fully appreciate now the meaning of freedom and am now a bit more familiarized with the aprertheid and from your point of view I was able to extract some deductions about the regime. i am just wondering how come your story hasn`t got the level of exposure it deserves, I really believe that the three of you should be deemed heroes in South Africa. I really do acknowledge the fact that i cant understand things the way they really were and for this reason i won`t go any further with expressing opinions. All i do know now is that if i get locked up in my life, i will definitely have a startpoint from which i could set about fighting for my freedom( joke, i really dont plan on going to prison, but just in case..). Anyway,I most sincirely hope that the world will not witness such a menace( the apertheid) ever again .

Synth Ovine ok just because cctv was available in Germany does that mean it was available in South Africa? I mean it didn’t seem a super secure jail as the front door lead onto the streets no fences, 1 guard, same keys for multiple locks so I mean everyone can get info on google about when the first cctv was used but you can’t google common sense

Tim, this is an interesting, exciting, daring escape! And for me to be able to comment to an actual escapee is really cool. :) It must have been nerve racking for you guys, knowing that if you got caught, that all of the work was for naught, AND they would have put you in solitary confinement AND they would have lengthened your sentence. Nerves of steel going through 10 doors of steel.

I just watched the movie so of course I immediately Dashed to TH-cam and just got done watching the 2017 LockCon conference. It was very entertaining to say the least, first you and Stephen should have never went to jail, neither should have that guard for 6 months. At the end of the LockCon conference if anyone would have asked what’s the key to freedom, all they could have done is watch at the end and see there’s that pic of you holding that key 🔑. There’s only one thing I don’t understand, you said when you first got to prison you hid that money for 3 months, but you were in prison over a year, so you took it out after the first 3 months and had it out the remainder of the year?
You’re story is very inspirational, I’m glad y’all got out.
