    I'd go for the Director's Cut. Ultimate Cut is more of a ''made for the fans'' type of a cut with tons of extras, but the Tales of the Black Freighter side story, while on its own is great, feels more like a padding that doesn't move the plot forward and instead breaks the entire pacing.

    I love how Snyder literally adapted the comic panel by panel and yet people still have the nerve to say "he missed the point".

    • @raam726
      @raam726 4 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      @@EditedAF987 the original comic critiqued and satirised the concept of superheroes by showing how morally grey and flawed they can be. The movie shows that well. It even talks about Dan's erectile dysfunction. Also, moore glamorised ozymandias and portrayed him as a total badass when he made him stop a bullet with his hand. They have to be shown as badass to be convincing career-superheroes. Silk spectre in the alley fight was a little too unrealistic though. And The disturbing ending sequence of the comic isn't even in the movie.

      @@steelbear2063 That's depends on how deep you dive into the story, the comic ending works better because it relie on a external treat where the movie literally expected the world to united because USA big weapon goes crazy and attacks everybody, and the story is around the could war, pretty naive to believe that won't be any political questions.

    • @AgentMorgan2010
      @AgentMorgan2010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I wouldn't say Snyder missed the point. I think it would be unfair to say that. I _would_ say he made a couple boneheaded decisions here and there that I didn't like, or that I personally wouldn't have made. But it really doesn't detract much from the overall film, which is still a clever film, mainly because it is so slavishly faithful to its source material. And ultimately, this is pretty much the best Watchmen film adaptation anyone could have possibly hoped for, so no one should really be bitching too much, I feel. It isn't perfect, but it _is_ quite good, and it's absolutely beautifully shot and nice to look at. No, it's not better than the book. No film adaptation ever is.

    • @shortsrus
      @shortsrus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The whole point of the fake alien ending was to satirize the Cold War. The point was that the entirety of the Cold War was driven by ludicrous fear from both sides. The soviets were worried that the Americans were gonna make the first move, the Americans were worried that the soviets were gonna make the first move, so as a result both sides ended up living in constant fear, when in reality neither one would have done anything had they not thought the other side would. The idea that the only thing that could unify these two enemies would be a giant alien squid highlights the absurdity of the Cold War. By changing the ending from an alien to Dr. Manhattan, it defeats the whole point that Moore was trying to make about humans as a whole. We fear the unknown more than anything else, and there is nothing we would fear more than some potential enemy that we know nothing about. By having the "enemy" be completely made up, Moore points out just how stupid and fearful and irrational the human race is. But if the "enemy" is Dr. Manhattan, the the fear isn't really that irrational, is it? Because we know Dr. Manhattan exists, and we know just what he is capable of, thus completely justifying any and every fear that any human may have about him.

    I prefer The Ultimate Cut...
    The copy I bought, came with The Directors Cut, as well.
    I got the 4K edition.
    I'm a huge fan of the graphic novel, so seeing the Black Freighter weaved in with the directors cut, was a dream come true for me.
    I didn't even know that cut existed til recently....
    I do recommend watching the directors cut 1st, if you haven't read the book.... The theatrical cut is good, but pointless, when you have the directors cut.
    I definitely think the ultimate cut, is the superior film... Even if Snyder doesn't agree.

      Man of Steel should' be been made and released in 2017, and BvS in 2019. That way, they would' be been released in the time period where Marvel enthusiasm was waning a bit. Because of this, they would have been praised for breaking the mold and taking risks.

    • @mattboy2313

      @Professeur Râleur I don't think you understand what Snyder's vision for the DCEU Superman was. You see, this more somber and contemplative Super was not like, the definitive version of Superman for this universe. Over the course of 5 movies, consisting of Man of Steel, BvS, his Justice League, and 2 more Justice League films directed by him, Superman would gradually grow into the traditional hopeful and optimistic Superman we know and love, giving him a character arc. Unfortunately, because of what they did to Justice League, we never got to see that arc to it's full conclusion

    • @ronnykazadi352
      @ronnykazadi352 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Professeur Râleur Zack Snyder's portrayal of superman is not Zack getting wrong the character. You have to understand that superman is not yet in his prime. And his build up till then (his prime) is what Zack is exploring.

      It fits the movie. As this is inside of Rorshach mind.
      Rorshach like most superheroes was inspired by Batman and Superman comics and tried to put it to real life. This is why this is comic book format.
      Rorshach treats comic book fantasy to maniacal degree.
      His mind was mixture of adoration of Superman and Batman comics. Mixed with radical right wing mindset.....
      Like captain of the ship he believes to be hero fighting for justice. When in reality he is broken man, that primary lusts for blood controls him.
      Comic is so disturbing because this is inside of Rorshach twisted mindset.
      In his eyes he was a hero. When in reality he was maniacal force of nature, that couldn't be stopped...

    I thought Rorschach's motives were well explained. The story began with him thinking humanity is too evil to be saved and in the end he demanded "Armageddon" be allowed to play out honestly because to him it was justice and the fulfilment of the Watchmen mission - to stop evil once and for all 🔥 Adrian instead believed a massive sacrifice and shock could save the good in the world by waking everyone up to an appreciation of cooperative unity even if it's cause was fear. As the Bible says with conflicting words in Deuteronomy "Fear the Lord your God and serve him only," and in Mark "Fear not but only believe." What is right? As the Watchmen story says, "I leave it in your hands."

    Watchmen Ultimate Cut 10/10. It perfectly fixed all above. It had amazing world building! We truly could engage into characters. It also perfectly captured WATCHMEN noir crime drama.
    As we can actually get engaged into Rorschach investigation. Following many leads, while getting lost in false leads.
    World building - comic book stand scene was amazing presenting how regular people react to world around them.
    Holis Mason documentary ---. It perfectly captured, newspaper and article segment of the comics. Presenting superhero story in form of 80s documentary.

    I don't know why they couldn't have made the Ultimate cut disk have a seamless branching mode allowing you to choose which version you want to watch.
    That said, I do like the Ultimate cut the best, but anybody not familiar with the comic will be completely thrown by why they're suddenly watching a cartoon, because the first Black Freighter segment starts without any introduction.

    I always start with Under the Hood, which I don’t think gets enough attention as an integral part of the experience. Then I sometimes watch the Ultimate Cut, but my preference is usually to go with Tales of the Black Freighter followed by the Director’s Cut.
    When viewed all together like that, the nature of the source material is much more closely approximated, and its themes which are implicit in the film become much more explicit, thoroughly defying the prevailing criticism that Snyder missed the point.

    Here in germany the Directors Cut never released, so the only option besides the Theatrical Cut is the Ultimate Cut, which I've seen twice. I honestly really liked it, but would like to watch the movie without the Freighter scenes once. Also I believe it'd be easier for people who don't know the comic to understand whats going on without those scenes. But I'd have to import the Blu Ray from somewhere to watch the directors cut.

    I think the Ultimate Cut is the definitive version. Tales of the Black Freighter is very important allegorical foreshadowing for Watchmen’s overall narrative, and I don’t think it bogs down the long runtime whatsoever. For me, it feels just as long of a movie watching experience as the Director’s Cut, which is a testament to the UC’s pacing

    The problem with the Watchmen movie is that if they were gonna adapt it, it should've been a miniseries done in 2020. The reason for that is that Watchmen was released in monthly issues & because of that, the issues are cover lots of material but also are closed off so they can focus on only one thing like the history of the minutemen, Rorschach's philosophy/mentality, the origins of Doctor Manhattan, etc whereas film does centrally focused continuous stories well but that's not Watchmen. But also, the context of when it was written, it was a commentary on not just the superhero genre at the time but also the global politics. When Watchmen came out, superheroes dominated the comic book market & other genres were a minority in comics but also, it came out from 1986 to 1987 when it was still the Cold War & tensions between the US & Soviet Union were rising again to the worst they'd been since the 60s (which is why you constantly see things like references to nuclear war, namely little boy and fat man which is a reference to the nuclear bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki respectively or the Soviets invading Afghanistan) to the point to where it was a terrifying threat that a nuclear war would've started. When the movie came out, there were only 2 MCU films, 2 out of 3 Nolan Batman films were released, the Raimi Spiderman trilogy wrapped up 2 years prior, you had a couple others but superheroes were not the biggest thing in movies/television in 2009 nor was there any serious global event going on that everyone was afraid of destroying the world directly. However, in 2020, superheroes DID dominate movies & television, not to mention the "you know what" happened where people were terrified of the world ending because of it. So a Watchmen miniseries would have been more relevant 3 years ago now (my gosh how quickly time goes by) but would've had to be modified to fit today & comment on the state of comic book films then not to mention the tensions surrounding the "you know what".

    • @mehallica666
      @mehallica666 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then it would've received even more hate from hardcore comic book nerds for not being faithful enough to the source material (as if it didn't get enough, even though it was extremely faithful, save for a few moments), and flopped even harder for being too far removed from the typical superhero adaptations the world had come to expect over the last decade.
      It came out just in time, and only gets most of the hate from dedicated Snyder haters. It's a masterpiece! We got a modern sequel series and it stunk!

    • @wonderwomanlover259
      @wonderwomanlover259 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mehallica666 Yes it did, it was a bad miniseries. However, that's also the other point why it failed to be adapted even in film. Watchmen is so specifically tailored to comics in the context I mentioned that to adapt it would not make it watchmen anymore.

    I watched the theatrical cut multiple times. Loved it every time. Got hold of the Ultimate cut and did not enjoy the movie. As the director said, the freighter pulls you away from the story too much. It also makes an already long film, very long. I didn’t even realise there were extra things added apart from the freighter, so cant say for sure if those made it better or worse for me. I will be trying to get hold of the directors cut now, as I didnt even realise there were 3 versions.

    It’s the Ultimate Cut for me. I put off watching this movie for the longest time because of the mixed reviews. But being a fan of films, collector’s editions & alternate cuts, that big boxed set collector’s edition just kept calling my name. So I shelled out more money than I should spend and popped in the Ultimate Cut that night. I was blown away even with the animated film spliced in, it worked. It also made me a Zack Snyder fan. Loved his Ultimate Edition of Batman Vs Superman as well. His Director’s Cut to Justice League, while better, was still kinda boring though. And 300 is way too overrated.
    But Watchmen Ultimate Cut is a masterpiece and one of my favorite superhero movies of all time. Up there with The Dark Knight and X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

    I wish a cut would fix the ending. Instead of having the weird ending change with Manhatten being framed for destroying New York, it’s the actual comic ending with the fake Alien. It really doesn’t make sense. It’s such a masterpiece. Frame by frame exact representation of the comic on the screen, but then he just changed the ending. It really made me dislike the movie.
