Rover P4 80 New Project review

  • Here is a look around and review of my newly purchased 1961 Shadow Green Rover P4 80.
    It's a good solid car and is mechanically sound and is fully useable. There are a few issues but none that affect use as a daily driver.
    I will be tackling all of the issues over coming videos so if you are interested please subscribe to the channel.

    At 2:45 Those little chrome things above the headlights reflect back the lights so you can tell they're working OK from the driving seat.

    I had an 80....2286cc Landrover engine and overdrive.....also had alloy bonnet door skins and boot lid. Bought it, changed the oils and drove it from Oxfordshire to Frankfurt....and back...no problem. Reg no RCT 309

      They are great cars. Mine has had the boot lid replaced with a steel item so will be replaced soon.

    As a teenager had the use of the old man's 75 - went like stink on what I remember to be its 6 cylinders. Later fitted a straight thru exhaust bypass that pleased the neighbours no end. The freewheel was an amazing device - what a treasure you have found.

      The biggest job will be paint, however that will probably be some way off. It is presentable and from what I can tell is mechanically sound, with a few small areas of bodywork to address.

    YNV is a Northamptonshire registration. It's the NV that gives the location. The Y is the extra letter added to registrations after 1932.

    My first car was a Rover 80. I loved the detail like the gearbox oil dipstick inside the car.

      I didn't spot that in the manual, thanks for the info. I love the dash and the valve radio.

    Old school registration letters until 2001 were located by the second and third letters according to the local authority that issued them. Your car was therefore registered in Northamptonshire.

    I daily drove a 1955 flat wing P4 90 about 40 years ago, It was a lovely old thing, Lovely RAF blue paintwork with a dark blue leather interior, It was in great nick and never let me down, The free wheel was quite a novelty as well, I sold it after 5 years of use for £500! I wish i hadn't, Great channel liked and subbed 👍

      @@davidbaugh The classic i slum in now is a dead tidy, Rot free 1964 Jag 3.8 MK2 manual, I'm never selling this car as i got it for ££ Peanuts and my daughter wants it in her inheritance!

    Lovely car my dad and grandfather had one each, dad use to say if was the working mans Rolls-Royce 😊

    The P4 Rover 60 with the 2 litre engine is my favourite. MY dad used to own P4 Rover 75 in the fifties in Sri Lanka.

    Love these rovers.me dad had a 100 p4 in the early 80s,two tone green.look forward to watching your progress on this one.looks sound.i am just having my 1968 jaguar s type restored thats bin in the family since 1987.more rot than was hoped discovered unfortunatley.is getting done tho,he one of the family.have subscribed.

      Thanks, I was struggling to decide what to purchase but, after some research decided on the P4, a reasonably affordable classic and great styling. I'm still familiarising myself with it and working out what needs doing and give it a good service. I hope to be doing weekly updates on progress. I love those Jaguars good luck with the restoration.       Thanks. It has a few issues mainly cosmetic, but nothing that will stop it from being used. I'll be delving in more depth as to what actually requires attention and more about the history of the car and what's been done to the car by the previous owner, it was well loved. Cheers David.

    The hole by the clutch foot pedal is most likely for a dipper unit for the lights. Nice video nice car, thanks for the share.

      Hi, the hole is for the screen washer, there is still the pump attached to the bulkhead. Someone has retro fitted a push action pump for the washer on the dashboard. I will convert it back to original at some point. I will be releasing more videos on the Rover soon........just been a little busy recently....ho hum!! Many thanks for the comment. David

    Great project, looks like you've got a really nice one.
    I had discounted the P4 but after sitting in one a few years ago I was smitten and keep looking to see if these are still the bargain luxury classic.

      Thanks, It's a lovely car. They're good value, but really good ones are being advertised for good money.....not sure if they are achieved though.

      Silly money. There are parts on my Lotus Elan which to buy an original part you'd have to spend a stupid amount. A Colin Chapman steering wheel for example, fortunately I have one, £700 or more. Then again most classics have scarce parts which attract big money.

    Excellent work with your new car and enjoy it my dad had several rovers a 12 16 75 80 100 I had a 75 80 and a Cyclops for awhile Very rare now and a 260 sli have enjoyed all of them would like a p5b or another 100 they are reliable and solid if you find right ones prices are going up fast on good ones

      Thanks. I love the styling and especially the dash and the steering wheel is on of the best I've seen, much like the one in a Vauxhall Creste PA I bought with my Dad many years ago. This one is very solid. I'm really looking forward to using and working on it, much better than modern cars!!.
      I like the P5b cars too, I did consider one but my Lotus Elan is in bits in my garage and the other garage for the P4b isn't quite long enough, well just with about 10cm to spare ( or 4") in old money......Best regards David

    The chrome on the bottom of the doors isn't chrome, it's stainless steel. Aluminium was used for the bonnet, boot, and doors, and also the air vent flap at the the rear of the bonnet. I see you still have the Solex carb, some people have converted the 80 to an SU carb.

      I was surprised it still has the Solex carb, however I do like originality in a classic car.

      @@davidbaugh I agree, always prefer originality myself. The problem with the solex carb, as you probably know, is petrol leaks at the butterfly spindle. Some people have tried to bush the spindle, but I don't think anybody solved it.

    The water bottles cost £100 pounds on eBay but you could use a pickled onion jar at a fraction of the cost

      I know they are a ridiculous price for what they are. If I was building a show car then I'd maybe pay it, but otherwise if mine broke I'd I'd live on cheese and onion butties for a week.

    In different to the ‘60’ P4, this had the straight-through like the Land Rover engine….’in’ - one side and out the same side. Where as the ‘60’ P4 has it straight through?

    That's a nice looking car and I'm most envious! I'm curious - I didn't think the 80 came with overdrive, but there appears to be no shortage of stalk switches. Overdrive or no? If you don't mind, I'll correct your slip of the tongue - an AM radio with one speaker can't be a stereo. Cheers.

      Thanks. Yes it does have overdrive and it does make a difference, as you'd expect, at cruising speed. Not entirely sure if it was retro fitted, which it can be I believe, but If I recall correctly the seller said it was factory fitted.
      Yes, a slip of the tongue, just so used to calling the stereos. I did have a 1960 Vauxhall Crest with a Record player fitted that played 45's.

      I have a Rover 80 which has an overdrive, I think they all did, I use an old mini floor mounted washer pump.

    Where you have your windscreen washer button should be the starter button. At least it is on my P4

      The washer "push" has been moved from the floor to its current position. The original pump is still in position but I can only assume it has been changed because it either stopped working or a previous owner preferred a dash operated washer. I will be converting it back it some point.
