2015 Volvo S60 T6 FWD Review and Road Test

  • Volvo has always done things a little differently than BMW and Mercedes. Rather than hold back updates and release them all in "mid-cycle refreshes," Volvo prefers to let the changes dribble out slowly year after year. As a result of this process a car can change significantly over time but it happens so incrementally that to the casual observer it's still the same car that launched four years ago. Such is the case for the 2015 Volvo S60. Vurses the S60 launched just four short years ago (US launch was three years ago in 2011), this S60 has new bumpers, hood, grille, seats, dashboard, infotainment system, gauge cluster, headlamps, new and revised safety systems, all-new engines, and a new 8-speed transmission. The question before us today is: are these changes enough to keep the S60 fresh and competitive while we wait for the complete model-line makeover we're all expecting in the next few years?

      It's kind of cool to own an S60 to be honest lol, it's a "stealthy" type of feeling because people expect them to be exactly what they've been in the past: the boxy professor's car. But truly, it's much more, and even if they remain a quiet competitor in the future, Volvo owners will respect their cars A LOT.

    • @HowdyYall537
      @HowdyYall537 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fsx767 I have an R and even that people dont appreciate very much even though its virtually a different car from the rest. I want people to know but i also think its cool that its quiet. I just want Volvo to sell more so that it can be on par with in stead of just below, but people really just want that brand recognition, Volvo stands for values and value and are driven by intelligent people.

    • @fsx767
      @fsx767 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome! Yeah I agree, in a way sometimes I want something that will stand out and make people go wow... but you know, I've really fallen in love with my car over the last 5 or so months so it's just not necessary lol, plus, an S60 still looks very nice and above average on the road so there's really nothing to complain about.

    • @HowdyYall537
      @HowdyYall537 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah in an R there isn't much contest. While driving home today I just thought to myself, I'm in a nice place to be. It's very comfortable as it glides down the road when I want to or rockets when I have to

      I agree. I told Volvo's new CEO this in person, but the biggest problem with Volvo is that nobody knows they are there. I hope that they start spending on advertising soon because the product line is actually competitive if they could get folks in the dealers to see them. Anyone shopping for a 328i or 528i should give the new S60 T6 and S80 T6 a cross-shop.

    Good review. So the people that are worried about the super/turbocharged 60s and 90s in the current SPA Volvos should see these reviews and look at repair records on the car. Because those cars have essentially the same motor as this one does. I may get this car two years down the road. It's only slightly dated and at least has an infotainment system. But it has the same engine as the newer Volvos. Just not sure about the room in the back if I want to take people on a long distance trip with me.

    Currently in an R design XC60 and want to change to a car. I would definitely be happy in an S60 w/ sport pkg. It is a good "stealth" luxury car, which is why it will never sell great. Too many buyers want an ostentatious car for $40K. I prefer a low key vehicle. Tip: Add 15mm wheel spacers and extended bolts to the rear, and it transforms the handling. An IPD sway bar is another easy cheap (realtively) fix for any unwanted body roll on the non R design models.

    Excellent & detailed review. I have a 2005 Volvo S40 that has been a wonderful car (as was the 1982 Volvo wagon we had) and the new Volvos continue to impress. They should definitely be on anyone's short list. When I replace my current Volvo later this year the only question will be S60 sedan or XC60 SUV?

    I enjoy your auto reviews very much. Very detailed and very useful.. One question about the 2015 Volvo S60 T6 : I have read that the brakes are "non-linear." How does this affect routine braking and is it of concern to you. I am not familiar with the term "non-linear" braking. Thanks so much. Steve Miller

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not have described them in that way. Generally people that say that mean that they grab harder the father you push but the initial braking at the start of the brake pedal travel isa little weaker than expected.

    Great review Alex!
    Would you choose the T5 AWD with sport package over T6 FWD? I went to purchase one and they seem to be cost almost identical. Any suggestions of which one would be a better choice?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tough choice. I'd probably take the T6 for the new engine, more power and 8-speed auto. Assuming you don't "need" the AWD this would be my selection.

    Odd that now the 2015 S60 T6 can be both FWD and AWD, I wish they upgraded the engine to a 300hp standard on all S60 variants, even the T5... meaning the R design could be very, very hefty against the competitors.

  • @georgesnyder5337
    @georgesnyder5337 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Alex - I love your video reviews as they focus on aspects that are actually important in the day-to-day life of the average driver. I have been a previous Volvo owner and had some in the family fleet (several RWD and S70) and currently have an aging BMW e46. A couple sticking points for me on the current P2 S60 include:
    1. Reliability/durability - once a Volvo hallmark, this seems to be more of an unknown now.
    2. Lack of a spare tire - I am tired of the "everyone is doing this" answer; this really bugs me and am frankly shocked to see this move from Volvo. While it *could* be dangerous to change a tire on the side of the highway, it *could* be dangerous to have a flat hours from civilization and cell service as well (AAA does not do smoke signals).
    Thoughts on those two items? Otherwise I am loving the idea of a T5AWD (though the new 4cyl FWD sounds pretty good - as far as front drivers go).

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not a huge fan of the missing spare either, but is becoming very common in Europe especially because of the need to reduce CO2 emissions. Most flat situations should be helped out by the fix-a-flat and inflater combo but sidewall damage or something more extreme would leave you stranded calling for help.

    • @georgesnyder5337
      @georgesnyder5337 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alex on Autos
      Exactly - as someone who has dealt with those types of flats, I can't stomach the idea of being at the mercy of someone else (particular with a kid on board).
      I know Volvo offers a donut spare in a bag, but it takes up trunk room. They also have an actual trim kit to put it under the floor, but since there is no real well for the spare it looks like it raises the floor up a bit (again, eating up precious space). That said, I have only seen one picture of it installed and it looks like it puts the floor level with the rear seat bottom when folded, Seems like a lot of space traded, but I can't be sure.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      George Snyder
      I would assume you would loose a decent bit of trunk space in the process. That being said I think that the last time I had a bad flat that involved the sidewalls was in 2008 when driving my 2006 V70R that didn't have tire pressure monitoring. Since then TPMS has been good for letting me know that there is a problem before it gets too far.

    Yes Fantastic job everything was well covered. With this generation volvo was aiming for Bmw and Audi and they have done quite a good job of hitting their mark. Not the best looking? Maybe not to the same degree eye catching ability but that coupe design is gorgeous. I currently own an S60R and every once in a while i think of what i could have had, but you know i bought my Volvo for many reasons one being i didnt want a car that everyone would laud over like they did when i had my little old audi. You get alot of car with a lot less pretentiousness and i really appreciate that. I am glad that you pointed out that the car isnt a nanny and there are more naggy cars. Volvo has something good going for it, all it needs now is to turn heads like The Concept Coupe and Concept estate. Current audis are kind of ugly at least the A4 is.

    I like it . Very smooth and great knowledge of the product. I like the Value Quotes. I would add the 365 days of the year this car could even move up a spot. The New gen 2010 & up never had fog lights S60. Always had LED running lights . The where just moved . I don't think the IS Lexus or ATS should be in the same conversation as the S60. The same goes for Acura. The box in the grill helps locate pedestrians and cyclists . What about wet roads ? Volvo refers to the existing T5 AWD & T6 AWD as Legacy until they are all replaced by the 2.0 liter.

    • @georgesnyder5337
      @georgesnyder5337 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Acura is in the conversation more than the ATS or Lexus IS; but the S60 is certainly a compelling choice when you talk about the IS250 or the Malibu engined base ATS.

  • @darvillebo

    @ 17:27: "Now Volvo tells us that this brand new T6 engine will never be available with AWD in this generation of S60 because they would have to make some significant changes to the chassis of the vehicle in order for that to work, and they are just not willing to do that at this time."
    Since Volvo does now offer this T6 Drive E engine with AWD and they are still on the same generation of the S60 as this video, which part of this statement is untrue? Did they make some significant changes to the chassis? Or is the advertised AWD not really AWD and instead perhaps a compromise of what they originally intended when they made this declaration?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is what we are being told. I would say it is likely the 302 HP / 295 lb-ft version will be offered as the standard engine depending on the final weight of the XC90. (Other world markets will start with a less powerful option.) Volvo also says that there will be versions of the engine that produce more than 302 HP so we should probably expect a tune in the 350 HP range.

    • @theotalma9063
      @theotalma9063 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex on Autos
      The base engine in the U.S is likely to be the 240-hp T5 Drive-E. Remember the only engine offered currently is the 3.2l I6 with less hp and torque than the 4-cyl T5. The XC90 was offered for many years with a 5-cyl engine good for only 208 hp, which,I believe was the most popular engine of its time. ..

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sort of depends on which rumour mill you want to believe. There are rumblings out of Volvo North America that they believe the XC90 needs more power in the base form to compete with the Germans. It's of course too early to tell and anything we hear now is simply speculation.

  • @TheInfamousButt
    @TheInfamousButt 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the T6 Drive-E requires premium fuel. So, even at 35 highway, how does the dollar per mile price stack up? Great video overall. I liked all the detail.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Premium fuel is recommended but modern cars will for the most part run safely (albeit with less power) on regular fuel even if premium is recommended. I only ever put regular gasoline in the cars I test and the Volvo operated just time.
