- If your AC unit is leaking water from anywhere other than the drain downspout, you need to watch this video! Water running down the inside of the furnace can short circuit the electronics and RUIN your AC Unit. Best case is to fix this before it shorts out!
Checking the drain downspout at least once a year is a great idea. It's now on my list of spring cleaning chores!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! 1am on a Sunday morning - cleaning up after a party (where I ran the furnace fan the entire time) and cole down to my garage to find a bunch of water on the floor around my HVAC and water heater- initially thought my water heater was leaking but found the water leaking from inside where that pvp pipe connects just like in the video. Luckily mine had an access point so I popped the cap and water was coming at the top so I just jammed a pipe cleaner inside and that clear line starts gushing water out with some air bubbles in it. It was like a lot like clearing a clogged toilet with a plunger. The leaking stopped instantly even with the fan still going. I have some clean up to do on the ground but saved at least a few hundred on a call to a tech. Not to mention the problem persisting through the weekend until I could have someone come out Monday morning at the earliest. Such a simple fix for what was a relatively stupid problem. Thank you again!

Troy...if I could reach through TH-cam and give you hug I would. Your AC issue was the same as mine and I was about ready to call out my HVAC team. I'm a DIYer first and I'd about given up once I opened my AC coil and saw the water tray filled with water. Found your video, followed your directions and sure enough, my drain pipe was clogged and water came crashing out above the clog once I disconnected it at the vertical sleeve . $30 later and a little bit of pipe work and it's working perfectly. I also repositioned the drain pipe to always have a down slope to help keep the water moving and not allow it to stagnate in the future. Wow! What a save! Thanks! Really appreciate you taking the time to post this video.

Got it done! Perfect instructions. I was able to suck my clog out with a shop vac. I also took the front cover off and cleaned/scraped out the dust inside. Cheers!

My clog was just past the pan, where it connects to the PVC pipe. A couple of long pipe cleaners broke through the clog. Thanks for your helpful video.

I would also install an emergency float switch on the second PVC drain output on the condensation pan. The one you have capped off and is slightly higher than the main drain pipe outlet.

Had the same issue in my basement I noticed that the floor around the central air unit was wet I even located the side where the water was coming from ,, I watched this video and the next day I did the same steps and that was the issue the pipe had blockage, I flushed it with hot water back to back and installed it back and it worked like I charm,, I just didn’t have access to the water pan inside the unit to drain the water that was in there but I’m satisfied with the results thank you

I used to have same problem in my house. I had created some bypassing connections to allow me unclogging pipes, with the same pressure gun for toilet clogged and also clogging Solution. Now, I wonder if instead of using 90 degrees elbow pipes, if using 60 or 45, could avoid clogging for ever. Haven't tried yet.
Good video, I would inspect it further as to what caused the blockage. My guess would be that 90° bend. A simple fix would be to just heat the pvc and create a more gradual bend.
The condensate , the water, is dirty and builds up a slime like coating in the drain. I have a Tee like this in my drain and i pour a coffee pot full of hot water down it 1 or 2 times a season.
I now do a Spring Cleaning of the pipe along with other items, haven't had an issue since starting that routine.
Instead of using an "L" (90degree), use two 45 degree fittings. Less problems and will not clog as easily as the 90.
Next level advice.

It only takes a few minutes, but could save you THOUSANDS of $$$$. Mine was a close call! Yikes! Sometimes it's the simple things....
If possible I would recommend using 45 degree pipe couplers instead of 90's. 90's clog easily with zero water pressure as you know from this video. Or you can bend the pipe at a slow 90 with a heat gun. Simple right??

I had a clogged pipe which once I cleaned started to gush out water which is what was coming out the wrong end and flooding my floor I am guessing. Fingers crossed that this may have fixed the issue. Waiting for 48 hours before I claim victory I guess. Thanks immensely for the video.

Brother i saw the water and freaked out and the first video i saw was yours and in two seconds i checked and sure enough it was plugged . Unit still working fine for now so i just need to hv it dry on the bottom. In over 100 temperatures it should be no prob. U knw i appreciated you video, thnks a million

You should be able to take the drain spout off and clean it out (or replace it). It’s ok for air to leak from it. Mine does too.
I saw blue fire once, my dad is trying to fix this leak coming from the washing machine into the kitchen sink, and the air conditioning
So I think this is my issue. On my unit there are two holes on either side (left and right) and one side has the drain pipe and a cap(left) on that other hole. My water is coming out of the other two holes on the opposite side (right) that are uncapped. Is this a similar problem with a clogged drain? Should the two holes that are unused be capped?

Dude I should've came here sooner. My AC is light a flash flood on this floor. I don't have the saw but I have a hand saw. Hopefully I can build what u did. Going to look at my set up now

Use some wire, bend a hook in the end and see if you can fish the clog out. You may need to cut the drain pipe to gain access. Then replace the drain pipe with new so it’s slick and clean inside. Hope this helps!
I have a non working outside ac. Underneath my house is flooded. Called plumber and he said it was coming from one of the ac pipes. One how to stop the water and two why is it pouring water when the ac is broken. Need advice quick.

Hey! Happy to find your video! What if my unit is over 20 years old, leaking water into my basement, and constantly freezes up unless we keep the fan running.. should we just get a new AC Unit? Our central heater is a few years old, but I'm just finding it difficult to come up with an extra 5,000 or more for a new AC! 🥵😒 any tips?
A freezing issue is usually caused by the ac running for too long and high humidity. It freezes on the coil and doesn’t have time to melt away before the ac comes on again. Could be an airflow issue where the house isn’t getting g enough circulation of the cooling air. Clogged return air vents etc. when was the last time you changed your filter?

there is water leaking from the behind ac unit. the wall is wet. now there is coming from the vent pipes on top. i can't go behind the whole ac or hvac because there's a wall connecting to our neighbor's garage. what do i do?
I thought this was my issue, and maybe it still is, so I'm going to clear out the lines anyway, BUT the main drain outlet still drips fairly steadily while the unit is running, so now I'm wondering if the reservoir/catch basin is overflowing somehow, or if one or more of the internal lines got disconnected somehow.

I spoke to my step-dad a power engineer who used to work in a nuclear power plant for some advice too, and he basically said the same as the video, so I just had to power everything down, then I drained the reservoir of around a Liter (32oz) of water, and blew out the lines.
There wasn't a ton of debris, but I guess with how low the flow normally is, it doesn't take much to make it get backed up. 48-ish hours later and it's stayed dry down there with steady AC use. I'll keep an eye on it for the next few days, maybe a week just to make sure it can keep up with the moisture it's been pulling out of the air.
We'd mopped up literally 4 or so gallons of water off the floor over the time when we noticed it until fixing it yesterday, so I'm pretty confident we fixed the issue. Now I just gotta remember to do it once a year or so....

If I replace the PVC pipe, do I need to put the sealant or whatever it is onto the connected pieces?
No sealant needed, you actually want to be able to take it apart to clean it out every once in a while.
Could this be an issue on a brand new system? Just had one installed a few weeks ago and it's already leaking...
Something else could be wrong. I’d call the installer to come back and take a look. That should be a free service call if they are reputable.
Troy, can dirty coils cause the tray underneath my unit to fill with dripping water?
No, the water comes from condensation and the drain being blocked. That said dirty coils will make it be much less efficient. Always use and change your air filter regularly.

Mine are normal sprinkler pipes available at Lowes or Home Depot. Take yours in to them and they can help you get exactly what you need.
Bummer. I can blow air through my line from the end of the hose to the condenser (no clog).I taped the end and sterilized the hose 2st water is still leaking.
Should water be leaking from the coils? I have water every day on my filter it is constantly wet not a ton but enough to know it continues to drip all day and I am worried about mold? Thanks for any advice. I am still under warranty and the technicians say its ok to have some water dripping I do not believe that.
No it should be caught in the drainage pan and go out these pipes to the floor drain. Check for clogs.

Ok so if it's leaking from the pipe in ceiling that you can't see, what do you do?
That sounds like condensation on the refrigerant line. These are usually insulated to prevent that. See if you can get some pipe insulation on that cold side pipe.
This was my problem too. Wasn’t leaking yesterday, but went to the storeroom today and heard water trickling. My question is this - Is it stupidity that leads to a design where a common water leak can gush water into the furnace housing, or is that part of a diabolical business model to increase sales?
Yes and yes! Some of both. In theory the pipe should handle the water, but in dusty basements and Maintenance closets the pipes are bound to clog up over time. It’s a good reminder to yearly check for clogs. I need to do mine again too. 👌🏼
What if you cant make your own how can you u unclog the pipe without replacing it? I’m having that issue now any help pls
Use some kind of wire with a hook bent into the end. Fish out as much of the junk as you can. But sprinkler pipe is super cheap. So replace it if you can.
I’ve got the same issue only I have a long tube that’s supposed to be clear but it’s fucking brown now. Ima have to buy another tune. There’s water all over the floor in my storage room but hopefully this fixing the problem.
The whole basement is condensing well the unit itself and the remaining of the inside of the vents are leaking moisture as well,.I.change the filter, clean out the outside ac unit, now I'm gonna check this pipe 🧐🤨
I took the covers off to find my A Coil froze.
So I have water coming up from my floor near my ac unit but I see no water around the bottom of the pan where you think it would be. I've noticed my wood floor squishing with water but some days it is dry. What could this possibly be?
Water in other places still means a leak. 😱 I would call someone ASAP and get that checked out. Could be a leaky drain pipe or worse, a supply line leak. Either way you gotta get that fixed before you have mold and rot issues. Sorry man, hoping for a good outcome for you!

If it’s that confusing you should have someone come look at it with you. It should just be a pipe that ends near a floor drain. 🤷🏼♂️
What i have going on is whater coming out of the floor on the 2nd floor amd when the AC is on i hear like whater droping and then on the ciling for the first floor there like a weird yellow stain now any typs anyone ???
AC unit cleaned, drain pipe clean, new light on unit, and still leaking all over inside house.
Must be flogged somewhere. Sorry this is happening to you. Pull the drain pipe off and see if there’s something in the fitting from the drain pan to the drain pipe. Gently use a wire or screwdriver to see if the debris can be pulled or pushed out of the way. Hoping it’s an easy fix.
My coil is leaking down to come out at the bottom of the furnace inside of the cabinet but when I pull out the drain hose it isn't clogged there at all. What else could cause this?
curious if you ever got this sorted? My guess would be an improperly installed catch pan or defective catch pan. If you can let us know how this went, someone else might have the same issue.
Hi! My ac condensator is dripping water only the half bottom of it. Ac still working perfectly, the problem is that if I leave it running for a long time the condensator freezes up and builds up ice and then blocks the air from coming out of the vents... My ac is on a Condominium where cooling towers are used. What can I do to stop the leaking? Thanks in advance!
Condensation is a natural byproduct of an AC unit. You can’t eliminate the water. I’d check your air filter to make sure it’s not clogged. Also the underside of the coils to make sure there’s no blockage. You need good air flow for AC to work right. Beyond that it may take a service call to have it looked at.
@@troysgarage yes, so some leaking is normal on the half bottom coil?? A professional came and said that i need a new AC unit!!! I changed the filter that it was dirty and so far it hasn't freeze again after a week so far!... Thanks for the info!! 👌
Does water always come out the ac?
Yup, it’s condensation. The more humid the air, the more water will drain away.
Mine has an S bend coming right out of the drain at the top. What do I do here? All joints are sealed. This was installed about 10 years ago. I am sure it is clogged
I used a drain weasel and stuck that up in there and twisted it around and when I released a bunch of sludge came out and it started draining again!!!
You can cut it out and replace it. If there's sludge in there it will clog again pretty quick I'm sure. Or just plan on cleaning it out 2x each summer.
So what if I can’t remove the pipe to clean it
Cut the pipe, clean it all out and use a coupling to put it back together. It’s not a pressured pipe so no gluing or soldering is required.
What was causing the clog?
Mine looked like dust lint and cobwebs mixed to a muddy mess! 🤢 It was pretty gross!

Quick question - i cleaned out the drain line and the pump, my rheem unit still has some water pooling on the other side near some other drain outlets that are capped. should I add a drain to the other side? also, my current configuration does not have a p-trap. it runs directly to the pump. Should i put one in? Thanks in advance for any advice!

My mother saying it could be our furnace but the water is leaking from our central air unit. In the short term the risk is low, long term could lead to mold. It’s an easy enough fix there’s no reason to wait. Could ruin the AC and you’d be replacing the furnace. Super costly to risk waiting.

Things like this don’t fix themselves. It’s likely that the humidity dropped so there’s just less moisture in the air. Summer is winding down and the AC doesn’t have to work so hard. My bet is next summer it will be worse if you don’t clear the clog! It really is an easy fix and there’s no reason to avoid doing it. Git ‘er done!!!
