- The late great Roy Orbison playing live (A Black and White Night) In The Coconut Grove club Los Angeles 30th September 1987! James Burton and Bruce Springsteen trading "licks" on the solo of "Pretty Woman".
What a "backing band eh!!? Wow!
Ronnie Tutt: drums,Jerry Scheff: bass,Glen D Hardin: Piano, James Burton: guitar. (The TCB band. was Elvis Presley's live backing band in Vegas!) Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello,J.D.Souther, backing singers!!: Bonnie Raitt,Jennifer Warnes,K.D.Lang.Tom Waits, Steven Soles. etc etc!
When music was real! and people could actually play live! (Not mime with backing tracks sequencers/computers etc!!)
Burton is the master of guitar 🎸 Bruce is a singer .

And it was his riffs opening and sustaining the overall sound on the 'Springsteen' sound AND the framework here, with the spot on chordal rythym of Roy Orbison . So not Just a singer is my point! Like Lindsey Buckingham's creation of the second Fleetwood Mac sound.
Cut Bruce some slack. His guitar playing is only his third-strongest talent after his songwriting and singing, yet he still rated a place alongside Burton and the other great guitarists in this show. Sure, he got his ears chewed off by Burton, but he could have returned the favor in spades if it were a sing-off, and no matter which side you're on it was an extraordinary performance by all of them.

Obviously the range of what JB can do is much wider than what Bruce can do on the guitar, but they're both great in their own right. Burton is a pioneer and has got some smokin' licks. Springsteen's soul comes out through his guitar. That is a matter of opinion, but I love both of them for different reasons!!!!! Not two players that should ever be pitted against eachother. They were playing TOGETHER.

That's exactly right. Spingsteen doesn't belong in the same building as Burton, leave aside the same stage when it comes to playing guitar. He doesn't seem to realize this. He should stick to composing and singing.

Shame on the producer for putting Bruce in that position. No one on that stage could keep up with Burton. Burton was the definition of taste and playing what needed to be played. Never needed to show off. I'm sure he held back out of respect. Bruce didn't embarrass himself, he just went against one of the greatest. So glad this was recorded
Great guitar conversation between James Burton and Bruce Springsteen. BUT it must always be remembered, Roy Orbison was the transcendent genius in the house that night! Never will be another.
totally agree Bruce with one knee bent really putting everything into it and James well he backed Elvis can't do any better than that and of course the big O .what a man what a voice what a great video priceless

@@rickywillingham3276 I absolutely love Bruce's sound (especially of late seventies and early 80's), but he would I'm sure admit he was out of his league. Great soul and emotion from Bruce, but the playing of Burton is a thing of great beauty. Seeing a smiling Tom Waits eating it all up and hammering on the piano is the cherry.

Burton is a better guitar player than Bruce, that's obvious, but Bruce has a gift of putting his soul in the music that very few have. That's something that cant be learned.
Bruce has a good time and thoroughly enjoys himself as well as entertain the audience......beyond belief. I'll never forget the feeling after his concert. Everyone was in love.

Burton is one of the great guitar studs of all time, but Bruce did a fine job in this duel considering he is not known for great solos. This is one of the great rock n ' roll moments of the 80's along with Carl Perkins Rockabilly Session masterpiece. A must-see for any fan of early rock that equals the greatness of this concert.

God, I remember when this came out...James Burton's playing here left a huge mark on me.....stunning ...as a player for 38 years and many bar gigs later, I[m still chasing that sound and feel ...amazing!!!

Right you are. Bruce is laying down the riff and then letting James run with it. This is a band. Bruce isn't quarreling over which one is the better guitarist. Bruce's job here is to set James up to show off his licks. This isn't a contest. This moment belongs to James. Bruce is functioning more like Ed Sullivan, announcing the act.
"Mericans like to see everything as a battle to the death. Sadly, the idea that two people can have fun at the same time is beyond the grasp of the culture over here. Yes!!- they were both having fun!! and Bruce was expertly setting James up and then gracefully stepped aside for the last few bars and let James shine. Great stuff!!

After 500 views I have to say: Bruce Springsteen opens and James Burton completes. Next to James Burton everyone can scream because James leaves every place to let off steam. And in it you can see the pro! Especially as it is by and large actually the TCB band with Roy Orbison who is mainly making music there. Ronny Tutt on drums and Glenn D. Hardin on piano with James Burton are TCB and remain unequaled in their being with Elvis Presley

This concert was one of the most wonderful of all concerts. The place, the artists, the music...all completely over the top. Buy the Black and White CD and you will enjoy the full concert as it was recorded. I have listened to it many many times, and each time it is a joy.

Agreed! Glen was a fine guitar stud who would have fit right on that stage perfectly. He and Roy are having a fine jam session in the heavens now!
Glen was a fantastic player who did session work for numerous huge name stars of the day. He recorded with the Wrecking Crew at Capitol Records in spite of the fact that he was an ear trained player meaning he couldn't read a lick of music. People like Tommy Tedesco, Carol Kaye and others taught him a little of that along the way. He really was an extraordinary talent.
