Not only for the gems dropped throughout, but for helping me through what I thought was a heart attack (I have an appointment tomorrow). This video made me want to pull my Roland MV 8000 back out.
Yes. Dave Smith founded Dave Smith Instruments which eventually became Sequential (after Yamaha gave him the Sequential name back). He also designed some excellent synths such as the Prophet series. I was very sad last year when I found out he passed away. I'm very thankful for his contributions and also a proud owner of two of the synths he designed, the 16-voice Prophet REV2 and Prophet 10 Rev 4. There's nothing like true analog oscillators running through true analog filters and envelope generators then through a voltage control amplifier. R.I.P., Dave. BTW, That beat was HARD!!!! 🔥 🔥 🔥 all the way!!!!!!

I wish we could have heard the Prophet run through a cheaper, more affordable 10K setup first to compare with the later setup we heard here. I would've asked him "let's say you only have 10K to buy outboard gear, what are you buying and why?".

One more thing, I love some of the Vintage converters better than the new ones because the new ones are too clean. It's like all of the soul has been washed out of them. Vintage apogee converters are still good today. It's like when you listen to a mid-2000 Jeezy record, some of his albums sound better than albums cut now. The Ying Yang twins, production by Lil Jon, those records hit harder than records that are coming out. Sometimes old is gold.

I had on my Second Gen air pod pros in while I was watching this. I heard a difference in sound. There was more warmth in the keys and I think I heard a tad more punch in the Bass & Kick.
There is nothing like that analog sound. People who think you can just keep everything in the box don't realize that when it comes to professional quality songs, it's not about the one magic bullet, it's all the small steps that make the big difference. Great video!!!!!!
This is complete garbage. Ignorance is bliss I suppose. The truth is many top professionals work 100% in the box and they can’t find any sonic differences that justifies working out the box hence the reason why they switched. My personal experience concurs with that. It’s not the gear but the engiNEER that makes the difference.

Most of those engineers you speak of that are actually respected, have mastered the analog realm and the only reason they don’t use it is because of recall issues. It’s all about the ears so no matter the gear, if you suck, you suck. You’re speaking from a hobbyist perspective and I get it. Calling something garbage would mean it’s not useful. @@kehindea nah, very few professional engineers don’t run the final mixes thru out board fx chains to process the sound. Every thing you hear that is released is ran thru a outboard chain. Even today. And most all of the fx chains or processing chains are also very expensive.
The farrofish is able to AD/DA on all 16 channels, tell him not to print on the way in!!! print in post, thats what the pristine converters are for, send out to hardware, use hardware as a insert (like you would a pluign) and print...
I do both but I’m using my burl as my AD. I like the ferrofish for ad/da but it’s not as good as my ufx 3 ( my interface ), definitely not my burl. My Burl is doing the capturing. All 16 come out of my ferrofish and goes to the orbit.

One thing about high end gear like this is that, yes, its very expensive - BUT stuff like this basically either holds its value, or increases over time. especially things like vintage dynamics and pres. On the other hand, you spend a fortune on plugins.. youre not gonna see that money again. Of course you also get infinity or whatever the item is, and while its sick to have, if youre not recording a symphonic orchestra with super high end mics, expertly placed and in a purpose built recording room - Id recommend a 500 series chassis and a few go-tos youll be just fine. if youre doing largely sampled / synth music you dont even need that. I work in the box w/ the softube console 1 and fader / UAD apollo. Songwriting and chops beats gear 100% of the time
I co-sign all of that chain, especially the Neve gear I run in my A-Room on top of the Trident A-Range circuits. An unlimited color pallette is how producers/engineers excel when trying to separate yourself from others.
Since you don’t have an issue investing in quality, for monitors go with some ATC or, what I’m seriously considering are the Dutch & Dutch 8c monitors. Probably won’t get them til next year, but I’m really impressed with the company and what they’ve done with these.

I love passive speaker monitors. Number one you can replace the amp because it's not tied to the speakers internally. There are a lot of vintage speakers that sound better then powered monitors. You can purchase and experiment with speakers, you don't like whatever you bought sell them. The sky's the limit when you go passive.

Awesome Chain, I know how it feels to run sounds through Analog. I will say after 20+ years of experience you can get some great results outside of this 40k method, but if you do have the money its awesome to have 🙌🏾. Alternate Method: Having a laptop/keyboard/drum machine and running it OUT through distortion and/or overdrive pedals for 808s and other sounds (or just bypass them) and run these IN through a Desktop interface SSL 2 with 4K activated. What you get is texture that allows you to hit harder but also the 4k changes the frequencies just enough to where the track becomes a little more wider. But the real sauce is how we control the dynamics. Find a reference track, use 3 fast compressor from Focusrite on three different multiband. (Low High Mids, and if you can get Stems references that will be amazing) Look at how much dynamic are in each low, mid and high. Adjust yours to the same dynamics and watch the SONICS of your speakers/headphones shift. You still have to mix your track, and you will find that your hi hats might be too hot, turn them down. But this is the best Advise I can give and it is from 20+ years of chasing that sound. Bolo Da Producer, love your content. The Community let grow and GO!!! 🙌🏾

Cause replacement parts were relatively cheap for the longest.
nah; Different case.. The older MPC machines had the circuitry in it that gave it its iconic reputation for analog sound. This all. stopped with the 4000 and was on its way down in the 2500.

The goal was to make it sound clean. 24bit clear quality samples was the aim and the old technology inside it wasn’t capable of performing that. Akai improved on that outdated tech and made the 4000 which had 24bit sampling and incorporated that into every sampler since. Music technology had moved out the 16bit age and people were trying to keep up with the higher quality of working in 24bit. Those 3000s,60, and 2000,s were going dirt cheap because of that.they were outdated 16bit yesterday year nobody wants that anymore tech. There was never a 3000 sound or analog sound people were chasing. You guys forget on those days people sampled from vinyl records. Something that already sounded way “lo fi”. The only thing people wanted were higher definition sampling rates to sample records more clearly. But the 3000s legacy was the performance factor of it. Not the sound output. That’s a modern digital age argument. People today would buy it for the sound because every thing now is so clean and 48k. In those 3000se times everything anyone made sounded 16bit. I mean you had dudes making demos on cassette tapes. If you were dope you had a cd which usually meant you recorded your stuff at a studio. Cause all that Protools stuff and cd burning tech wasn’t just sitting there on the shelf for you to buy in 2000. That stuff costed quit a few grand to get into. That legit was “pro” tools. You had to be a pro in the industry to afford stuff like that. People where on multitrack recorders doing their thing. When apple put out those cheap iMacs they changed the game with their garage band. Cause dudes could use a daw and burn cds like real studio were doing for the first time. That crisp clean digital recording was offered on a wide scale. Then Protools grew a brain and started making all that m powered crap for the common man. But anyway the point was in that era it was 16 bits going into a 16bit multitrack or cassette recorder so there wasn’t emphasis on “analog” when stuff already sounded low quality.
That would of been cool, If at the end of this video there was a before (just a normal bounced down of track) and an after (bounce down with just the sounds running through the gear) People would have loved that here for sure!!
Thanks for sharing this. With the whole MPC debate this is what I've been saying, you can sequence with just about anything but you can't expect one machine to give you a pristine sound at mixdown. If your not happy with the digital summing, run your stems through at least one piece of high-end analog gear. This setup is crazy tho, very smart portable rack design too eventhough they must weigh around 150lbs each.

Bolo you should look into the history of Sequential, it is super interesting! It started in the 70's closed in the 80's, bought by Yamaha and revived, then Dave Smith got it back.

I’ve been wanting to add on more outboard gear. I have an Avalon 737 and a JoeMeek Vq6 and I want to add one more of each to make some stereo channels. A good summing bus would be good too
Analog is the best especially if you grew up in that era but the problem is most young cats can't afford $14,000 on gear. They ain't seeing that much doe at the start of producing plus they waste money buying bullshit for the gram and TH-cam. It's a different game out here. I love the set up, respect Sir.

Dope gear, don't you just end up sending stems to the artist and mix engineer once the beat gets placed so they're scrapping your mastering chain? Or are you reprinting indivdual buses a second time through the chain by bouncing a full mix without dynamics on the main bus, then import and run that full mix on a track with another separate output that the main 2 bus, while routing the side chain input on all your dynamics processing on the 2 bus from that mix track then run each group through the chain 1 at a time. It's a pain to recopy the master processing to stems, but doable indeed.
There’s a few outcomes. Sometimes, which is more often then you think, the artist uses 2 track mix. Or, reprint all stems if you got 8 stereo outs it doesn’t take long, no more than two passes Or… let artist record on 2buss mix and send stems directly from program and let mixing engineer try to Match it. Either way it’s always best to send the artist the best 2buss mix 💪🏾

My setup is apogee mk2 converter going out to the neve orbit 5057 then into the maag eq4m then to the dangerous compressor me personally i like to have. more flavours from different hardware i had the api2500 but didnt like how it compressed the overall mix its better as an instrumental bus comp ialso hadthe api5500 eq really beefy lows and mids but i did not like the highs so i updated the opamps inside the circuit boards and the the scot red dots opapms and it sounded opened i also tried the ssl fusion but again it sounded like an expensive plugin got rid of it lolol i will get back the api5500 eq again later im also building me a bus compressor too... so many toys so little time

In hip hop the top engineers such as Leslie Braithwaite and Jason Joshua are fully in the box. Leslie hates analog. To each his own though.

There was never a 3000 sound or analog sound people were chasing. You guys forget on those days people sampled from vinyl records. Something that already sounded way “lo fi”. The only thing people wanted were higher definition sampling rates to sample records more clearly.
But the 3000s legacy was the performance factor of it. Not the sound output. That’s a modern digital age argument. People today would buy it for the sound because every thing now is so clean and 48k.
In those 3000se times everything anyone made sounded 16bit. I mean you had dudes making demos on cassette tapes. If you were dope you had a cd which usually meant you recorded your stuff at a studio.
Cause all that Protools stuff and cd burning tech wasn’t just sitting there on the shelf for you to buy in 2000. That stuff costed quit a few grand to get into. That legit was “pro” tools. You had to be a pro in the industry to afford stuff like that.
People where on multitrack recorders doing their thing. When apple put out those cheap iMacs they changed the game with their garage band. Cause dudes could use a daw and burn cds like real studio were doing for the first time. That crisp clean digital recording was offered on a wide scale.
Then Protools grew a brain and started making all that m powered crap for the common man.
But anyway the point was in that era it was 16 bits going into a 16bit multitrack or cassette recorder so there wasn’t emphasis on “analog” when stuff already sounded low quality.

Thanks for sharing this. With the whole MPC debate this is what I've been saying, you can sequence with just about anything but you can't expect one machine to give you a pristine sound at mixdown. If your not happy with the digital summing, run your stems through at least one piece of high-end analog gear. This setup is crazy tho, very smart portable rack design too eventhough they must weigh around 150lbs each.

Dope gear, don't you just end up sending stems to the artist and mix engineer once the beat gets placed so they're scrapping your mastering chain? Or are you reprinting indivdual buses a second time through the chain by bouncing a full mix without dynamics on the main bus, then import and run that full mix on a track with another separate output that the main 2 bus, while routing the side chain input on all your dynamics processing on the 2 bus from that mix track then run each group through the chain 1 at a time. It's a pain to recopy the master processing to stems, but doable indeed.
There’s a few outcomes.
Sometimes, which is more often then you think, the artist uses 2 track mix.
Or, reprint all stems if you got 8 stereo outs it doesn’t take long, no more than two passes
Or… let artist record on 2buss mix and send stems directly from program and let mixing engineer try to Match it.
Either way it’s always best to send the artist the best 2buss mix 💪🏾

My setup is apogee mk2 converter going out to the neve orbit 5057 then into the maag eq4m then to the dangerous compressor me personally i like to have. more flavours from different hardware i had the api2500 but didnt like how it compressed the overall mix its better as an instrumental bus comp ialso hadthe api5500 eq really beefy lows and mids but i did not like the highs so i updated the opamps inside the circuit boards and the the scot red dots opapms and it sounded opened i also tried the ssl fusion but again it sounded like an expensive plugin got rid of it lolol i will get back the api5500 eq again later im also building me a bus compressor too... so many toys so little time
That ADAT he mentioned - is that a tape machine? Coz historically, an ADAT is a digital tape recorder/player.
