Mask with Feathered Edges and Alpha in Camtasia

  • Camtasia doesn't have a feathered edges mask or a mask smoothing option. Any object you hide behind a mask using the Media Matte or the Track Matte will take the mask object's shape, and the edges will be sharp.
    In this tutorial, I show you how you can combine several tools that Camtasia has and a couple effects to achieve blended, smooth, feathered edges on any shape. You can use that as a mask on any clip or object, and you can have alpha gradients on the edges, blending smoothly into the background.
    In this tutorial, we use grouping, media matte and a few tricks to achieve this blended feathered edge mask.

    Another technique could be to add a blur callout on top of the circle and then group the blur and circle together and use that group as a luminosity matte. The feather region is more narrow though.

    • @Graphicious
      @Graphicious  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to try that, thanks! I tried in older versions and when grouped, the blur callout loses the blur

    Yay!! I've done something similar using the glow effect and increasing radius and intensity all the way up, but never thought to try multiple groups of the mask to enhance the effect. Brilliant! Still, I just tested using the drop shadow instead of the glow effect, and the drop shadow provides more feather than the glow. Both work, but drop shadow is better for more feathering, which I love. Thanks for showing this. Two different edge feathering using two different visual effects. Love it!!

      Thanks a lot! I tried the glow effect too, but I found that it takes much more grouping and repeating until the difference between the actual mask and the surrounding 'aura' is eliminated. With the drop shadow it takes like 2 or 3 groups+matte+shadow to finally make it seamless and not have an edge. This could be such an easy function to add in Camtasia, as an option to the media matte preferences - just apply a feather. Done! The engine is there because they are using it for the Glow and the Drop shadow. How hard could it be to make it an option, part of the media matte effect? Maybe in future versions, eh?

      @@Graphicious Yes, it would be fantastic if they built feather in as an option. Same with font strokes. Both used so much in my designs, and I hate to have to put workarounds in place to make them happen. Ahem. Maybe some day. I'm looking forward to experimenting with these feathered masks combined with blend mode. Hopefully will be able to add some cool looks.

    shape + blur, group + media matte = same effect (?)
    anyway i didn't knew that technique with the dropshadow, so i learned something new 👍 that's why i love this channel

    • @Graphicious

      Thanks for sharing! Yes, the method you suggested with the blur works but three problems:
      1. The blur size is limited because the blur (even at maximum intensity) will not make the feather wider.
      2. Duplicating the blur will not make the feather wider either, just increases the blurriness of the shape (which doesn't help).
      3. Previous versions of Camtasia disable the blur when you put it in a group.

    Great hack! Thanks. Could you please do a video showing how to blend 2 or more images where parts of each layered image are blended together with feather effect. Kind of like what you might do in Photoshop.

    • @Graphicious
      @Graphicious  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Not sure what you mean. Camtasia doesn't do gradient transparency. The procedure shown in this feather mask video is tied to the shape of the mask object. Are you referring to isolating various objects in the photos and have it blend around them?

    • @nealm8322
      @nealm8322 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Graphicious yes. .. in other words... isolating an object from one media and blending into another kinda you can do in photoshop using layers. Hope this makes sense.

    Would you recommend using Camtasia 2023 on a PC or a Mac? Upgrading my machine and am not sure if I should stick with a Mac, or try a PC if the features are better? Thanks!

    • @Graphicious
      @Graphicious  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've recently migrated to using Mac 100% after many years on Windows.
      I'll say, I've collected a list as long as my arm with the differences between Mac and Windows in Camtasia. Lots of things from keyboard shortcuts to features that are missing or behaving quite differently. I'll publish that on my blog soon.
      It seems as if the Mac version is 'the little brother' of the Windows one. The Windows version seems more polished and capable.
      However, with 2023, I find that on Windows (at least on my machines), Camtasia is much slower and more buggy than on Mac. On Mac it's more stable.
      Again, this has been my experience, not saying it's a general issue, but if I were you, I'd stick to the Mac version for now.

    Can you please make a video how to add echo sound effects in video or Audio in camtasia 2022 please?

    • @Graphicious
      @Graphicious  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Camtasia doesn't have an echo effect I'm afraid. You can kind of create a 'fake' echo by duplicating your audio track and moving the copy one or two frames back, and lowering its volume. But it's kind of a cheap method. Better to do it in Audacity or something else, and re-import.
