I’d argue Tony Ferguson’s win at 216 is one of the only meaningful interim championships just cus Conor never returned. He was basically the lightweight champion at that time

Renan Barao is probably the only legitimate interim champion I've seen. With Dominick Cruz unfit to fight and the UFC unwilling to strip him for inactivity, Barao actually did what an interim does, he defended the belt while the champion was unable to compete. When Cruz got injured yet again after they were set to unify it, enough was enough and he was promoted to undisputed.
Every other interim just felt like a promotional tool to rescue some watered down card, a fuck you to the guy currently holding the belt or unwillingness to strip their cash cow who refused to defend.

Interim titles should be reserved for injured title holders, even then only if they have a reasonable return time frame. The fact they create them to boost a card because A) the champion is chasing money fights or B) they refuse to pay the champion accordingly is absolutely preposterous! It takes the prestige of being a champion as badly as it does in boxing.

@F.W. or just have the number one contender be what it should be in like every other fighting sport if your the number one contender you have gained the right to challenge for the title but in MMA they might just not like you and either not give you your shot fully or just make your wait and not get paid for like a year+ that and start cracking down on inactivity due to chasing bigger fights. Also UFC should be paying proper unlike they do now of course i dunno the sports a mess.

4:10 it's like you completely forgot the UFC was uninterested in the flyweight division until the ESPN deal. Even today the UFC has some bad flyweights when they could snatch up really good flyweights from Europe, Asia, and Central/South America.

Yeah, and at this point you have to rank her worse than De Randaime. She won it against Modiferri....then couldn't fight, missed weight multiple times even in the weight class above and lost her only fight since TUF. Biggest let down, at least Germaine made a run at bantom after being stripped.

Don't you guys agree that an Interim Title is pointless? It literally means number one contender, and even guys like Tony and Colby didn't get a title shot when they were Interim champs. What's the point of being an Interim Champ when there is the real champ sitting at the top? Then if you don't beat the champ when you are the interim champ it'll all be just a waste honestly.

While I understand the criticism interim titles fights get, some of the best fights I've seen were interim title fights. And they went all 5 rounds. It would've sucked stopping them at 3
Simple, make all top 10 fights 5 rounds. A fake belt shouldn't make a difference to how good the match is. If a champ cant or wont defend the title in a decent amount of time they are stripped of title and the 2 top ranked contenders fight for the title. If the ex champ had to vacate because of injury they get first shot when they come back

I'd honestly put the Nicco Montano vs Roxxane Modaferri fight in there to replace at least one of those. Not only were both fighters not championship calibre (even by the standards of woman's flyweight), but Montano was stripped before she could fight Shevchenko making her one of the least deserving champions in UFC history, probably only behind Aljo.
