The best way I used to start my YZ426F was to follow everything this guy said, until he gets to that half kick after the decompression lever pull. I cranked it over until the compression became too great, let the kick starter come back all the way to the top, pull the lever and release, then kick. That way you get that little extra rotation and a full kick. Cold or hot, it started the first kick every time.
Thank you so much!!!!! I just bought one and the guy told us to do this whole ritual to getit started. Befor i watched it it took me and my dad 2 hours and alot of cuts and bruises to get it started! Thanks again.
I got my wr426 fixed up, started in 5 years, and i was so happy, until i stood on the kickstarter and it didnt budge... thanks for the tip, ill see if my small leg can start it tomorrow
Great job! On mine I pull the choke knob ( black one) hold the compression release lever in kick it over a couple of times then run it past tdc and start it. If you squeeze that throttle when its hot you will flood it. Even when its cold. That carb has an accelerator pump.
You are a brave dude wearing those shoes and a pair of shorts kicking that thing. Never had one kick back and put your knee into the bars and the kickstart lever through the sole of your shoe yet I see.
Great video! alot better then the other people trying to show you how to start it and suck at explaneing it.i planned on making a vid to help people out but u beat me to it! haha, i do it a tad differently though i dont use the decompression to get to the "spot"i just push down abit harder with my leg and it drops into the "spot" then u just raise the lever n kick it hard.either way works i just feel more precise not using the decomp.(u should add a text box about what a choke/hot start is/does)
Once you get it down it really isn't hard to start. You can buy a Hot cam for it that has an auto-decompression built in. Then you can just kick it till it starts instead of using a decompression lever..
The procedure outlined in this video gets you to top dead center when you kick it over. That's why it starts so easily...you just described exactly what the video is.
Mine doesn’t even have a stopping point when going down because it can’t even go down in general!? Compressing it works fine just so much compression in it after I let go?
This is the only video I have found that explained in a way that I could actually follow. My kick starter on my wr400f has been destroying my ankle and I finally figured the son of a bitch out with this video. Thank you!!!
five kicks is a bit much especially with an idle being "high" thats how my bike was before i shimmed my valves come to think of it. around 5 - 7 kicks from cold and a high idle, now that their shimmed its almost always 1 kick sometimes 2, and runs ALOT smoother. you might not think there is a performance issue, but you wont know until your valves are in perfect spec what your missing. do you have the tools to check ur valves and or knowledge/owners manual/matanace book? to do it?
hi there, i am going to try this as i just bought a wrf400 that is basically new, 212miles only, anyway, i am only used to 2 strokes eg cr250, i am finding it really really hard kicking my bike over to a point were i think i want to sell it!! dont get me wrong i love the bike but wish it had electric start, i will try this tomorrow... thanks for the video
Its does exactly whats it's name says, "Hot Start" meaning you pull the red knob out for starting the bike when its fully hot ONLY, (engine running for 10 mins of "riding" or more) if you use the hot start knob when the engine is cold you risk gas fouling your spark plug. the choke is the black knob and is used for cold starts. or when the engine hasn't been running very long at all. if you have a cable to your handle bars from the carburetor thats the hot start.(its aftermarket in most cases)
does it do anything bad to the internals? am asking because i had to use it to kill my bike when the kill switch stopped working ..but i fixed it but i still would like to know
not checking valve clearances and shimming them will lead to engine failure and possibly blowing up. checking valves adjust clearance and timing, its a HUGE part of 4 strokes. when a valve is out of spec and loose its staying open to long and lowering compression also if its exsessively loose it can come into contact with the piston and bend/snap and blow ur top end. when its to tight its not staying open long enough, wich throws timing off and keeps exhaust gasses inside. it can brake a valve
I think you must be skipping a step. When do you let go if the decompression lever? Do you let go of the lever when its time to kick it once you've done the other steps?
(by kicking like a 2 stroke i mean you can just kick it trough no more finding the "spot" HOWEVER it does "not" mean you can give this 4 stroke any throttle when starting like you can when u start a 2 stroke.
I had a yz426 when I was 14, and it's not hard to start. Just kick it over until the kick starter feels stuck, then stop, pull the decompression lever in and kick it slightly a few inches down, bring the kick starter back up and give it a full kick.
@@David-mt3cl once the kicker gets stuck, stop, bring the kick start lever all the way up, pull in the small decompression lever, and kick it just a tiny bit past the hard spot, the let go of the decompression lever. Bring the kicker back up all the way and give it a full kick
You might be a little small on the bike? to ease starting on these beasts you neeeeeed to check and "keep" your valves in spec, it makes a WORLD of difference! not just for starting but in over all performance too! mine rides ALOT smoother now and starts first kick every time. also if you tired of this "trick" install a "Exhaust HotCam" made for this bike, it has auto decompression so you can get rid of your decompression lever and just kick the bike like a 2 stroke!
i need to put my bike against a wall to kick it, to use my full weight on it, i can't start it like you do, but i would like to if i could :P my bike would never start after 1-2 kicks and the idle is high, when i try to adjust it, it just stalls
well i am 1m80, hmmm ok, i think in performance is nothing wrong, but the kick tactic does not work on my bike... when i try it, it just doesn't do the same as the one on the video!!! ye i have been thinking on getting that, but most of the time it start after 5 kicks or so ^^ , you know how i can put my idle so low as on this video without that it stalls?
i converted the weight via google :D lol i don't know why u can stand on ur kick lever and it not move that's...odd... no ur valves are not bent if your bike still starts/runs with good power, in all honesty the shop around here wanted 120$ (US) to shim my valves. i checked them and re-shimmed them my self, learned ALOT and only paid a total of 20$ for the feeler gauges and 3 new shims. as long as your dad has a torque wrench too. thats all you need to do this ur self.
i jus got this bike in the 01 version and would like to buy a hot cam for mine. was wonderin if you had a reputable site i could get one from? and if there are different brands that produce them. thanks ahead of time
Cobra EC23 I just picked up the 01 last month. And man what a fucking bitch it is to start! Started it 5 times today and kicked it probably 100x.... what are your thoughts on the 01?!
Quick question, at the time when you are doing your "one hard kick" are you still pulling in on the decompression lever? Or you just pull it in once and release it when you are doing the "soft kick"? Thanks!
@@amoses823 no you aren't pushing in on the decompression lever. you only do it to release that exhaust pressure in the engine to make it easier to find the right spot to kick

i have a hot cam installed in my yz426f and still having a hard time starting it, valves are ok, it is tuned fine, once it fires up and i shut it down i just need 1 kick to start it, but before i get it started geez... don't know why it won't go since i always go to TDC even with hotcam (no i don't use my lever anymore)

Or put a hot cam into a 4-stroke that has the decomp and it removes the need for it.
When you kick to start do you have to pull the comp lever?
where did you get the mounts for the decompression lever and hotstart? I'm missing the bracket for my hotstart.
the moment the bike starts.

are they harder to start than a 450 or a 250?
I tryed it an i just dont have enouf. Ass to kick it over its easer for me to push start it down a hill an pop the cluch in 2nd
I'm putting a hot cam in mine so I don't need the decompression lever
