I will show you how to start your 2001 or 2002 Yamaha YZ250F with a decompression lever. Here is a good explanation on the starting drill. www.thumperfaq....
red knob is hot start, black knob is choke. use red knob for restarting after a fall or stalling when the engine is hot (been running for a while) use black knob for cold starts (when the engine hasn't been running)
THX man!! The biggest thing you pointed out that helped was saying "When you press the decompression lever only move the kickstarter slightly" I kept pressing it to far and could never get this newly rebuilt everything started! My day is going MUCH better now that I got this thing started!
pulling in the decompression lever opens one of the exhaust valves... So if you pull it in while its running the valve could come into contact with the piston and the valve could possibly break off and get stuck in the piston and cylinder head... Causing major engine damage and a very expensive repair bill... I have pulled it in a few times while the bike was idling on accident and I have not had any problems, my advice would be to NOT pull it in while its running
If your not a fan of this get the Auto Decompression Cam from Hotcams and/or take one from an 03/04 yz250f and de-compression will be done automatically when you are kicking
ive never needed a de comp leaver on any dirt bike ive kick started. its just to help smaller guys get past the compression stroke IMO kick it to compression then kick hard and they start up that way real well for me... i only use the decomp for when i lay those bikes over, hold the throttle wide open, hold the decomp, kick a few times, then kick regular with hot start (after finding the compression stroke). just my $0.02 anyway
Kicking a 250 is easy , even without any decompression used, One push down till compression is felt,bring it up and kick all the way through to the footrest,Don t be scared and don t half kick. Try kicking a xt 500 without decompression, I ve seen lots of broken knees and twisted ankles.
Try it with a 02YZ250. Any 500 is a breeze to start compared to these. W or w/o comp release. They are touchy. No half kicking after finding tsp either.nothing like my CRs of old.

I have an 02 YZ250F and holy fuck the compression is high, it also floods really easy, it’s a pain to start when cold and easy to start when warm. Most ha e the opposite, I’m going to try this, hopefully it works

I just bought the same bike my buddy I bought it from said to release the lever every time before I kick. It is way different from how you do it, is there a correct way to start it? His takes quite a few kicks to start
I just buy a 2002 model it have 2 choke buttons one red and one black.. Wich one did you use to star it??? When i ride the bike for about 20minutes if it goes of i cant start it again it takes about 15 minutes

No it's not as simple as that. Had one for 20+ years. It was a piece of crap when I bought it and still is a piece of crap. Bought an 03 and it' was a great bike that was easy to start.
Does it have the manual decompression lever? If it doesn't then it has an auto decompression camshaft and I would say that it is normal. I may be wrong though... I sold my bike about 2 years ago.
Also the oil can be over filled and into the cylinder head and there will be almost no resistance. Empty the oil and refill with the recommended amount and you should be good. Oh ya clean your spark plug after too.

i was using the compression lever wrong this whole time -_-*, but never had a problem starting it till today
Sorry, I have no idea what bend bar it is but it was a Pro-Taper bar, not sure about the clamps either. I sold this bike quite a while ago.

westwing23 Unless you get a decompression cam but I have an 02 and it starts first kick pretty much every time even in the cold.

Josh Lucey no hot start is for when you’re riding the bike relatively hard and you either stall or kill the bike when it’s at operating temp.

Did you ever figure out if it's supposed to be so easy to put the Kickstart down?. My bike does the same thing and runs great.
