- Recently I was challenged by my friend Joe (AverageDeku) to get the highest possible score in Mario Maker 2...with a few rules of course. The High Score Challenge proved to be extremely difficult and takes a lot of planning!

14:00 Instead of quickly beating the level and getting an easy 14,650 (293 seconds x 50pts per second), he skips while right at the flag. Gotta take those points when you have the opportunity. Having a lot of time left on the clock when you beat the level can massively increase your score.

Yup the timer bonus is easily forgotten. Always gotta weigh whether or not it's worth it!
Also, if the points for 1UPs are 5000.
Didn't you get 8000 for the nearest flag instead of a 1UP?
At least, so I remember in SMB1.

@@jonathandiazperez It's actually different in Super Mario Maker 2! Instead of 8,000, it is 4,000 when you are right underneath the top
DGR. Just a tip:
On level 10 called (world1=2) you could have collected infinite checkpoints.
By hitting one checkpoint you can hit the other one again and so forth.
You got less than 14,000 points with the ~300 seconds you had.
You could have hit the checkpoints dozens of times and still gotten a one up by the end.
That would have been easily 5 or 6 times the score you earned.
Same thing by standing under a renewable power-up pipe. Even if its one power-up every 3 seconds, that's a lot better option than saving time for the bonus.
Those are the strats that get you over 1,000,000 points. It's a great combination of luck and intuition
Easiest strat is just to find levels where you can do the infinite 1-up trick and constantly stop at 7 before starting again (a full combo is 16,400 points, once you hit a 1-up you only get 1-ups, you do not get more points). Repeat until timer is almost depleted and then finish the level. You can easily accumulate hundreds of thousands of points in a single level if you're good at it... although not a TON of levels, especially in easy, have that available.
Next best strat is just power-up consumption, 1000 points for each one. Find a red pipe that dispenses power ups and you can get about 1000 points a second. Bonus points go to finding a little timmy level with dozens of powerups on the ground and/or multiple red pipes that dispense power-ups.
Next best strat is infinite checkpoints, when available (if the level allows that, and I imagine red coin infinite checkpoint levels are very rare in easy) as I know from troll levels it's 2000 points for a checkpoint and if you can easily go between them, you can rack up 4000 points (2k for each one) very quickly over and over.
As far as other things to keep in mind:
A timer gives you 500 points for every 10 seconds remaining (so essentially 50 per second) so you can, in theory, get approx 25000 points max from the timer. Nothing great compared to the best strats, but certainly worth finishing a level with max timer.
All bosses give you no points at all and things like clown cars, koopa cars, and being underwater give you 200 points per kill but do not start a combo. So those should generally be avoided. Coins, unless in a speedrun setting (or if there's a bonus room with a LOT of them), are only 100 points each and aren't really worth it either. And keep in mind they're 100 points regardless of their value.

14:30 You missed the golden goose of this challenge and it’s not Little Timmy - it’s a red power up pipe where you do nothing and get 1000 points every 1-2 seconds. This course was 300 seconds so that would have averaged out to 450,000 if you had just sat there letting power ups rain down. In fact, it was this type of situation that led to other parts of the challenge to make sure players didn’t simply sit there under a red power up pipe for 20 minutes, like the bonus points for lives or the minimum clear requirement.
The golden goose is actually just a shell and some steps.
200+400+800+1000+2000+4000+8000, over and over again until time runs out.

he could have but he missed alot of other good point farming levels like the castle night goomba level he could have thrown a bunch of them to the pit and just kept jumping on the goombas to rack up a bunch of points

@@toastWs Yeah that one really annoyed me, he was sitting their racking up points quick from the powerup dispenser, and seemed to clearly know so, but after a bit he is just like "NOPE, I'm out"

High kill streaks get you no points after the three 1UPs for the level. The powerup pipe got you 1000 points per second, standing under on of it for the remaining 5 minutes would have gotten you 300,000 points.
Yup red pipes are a Godsend in this speedrun haha
This was one of the most frustrating videos because he’s not paying attention to the fact that every time he wins a level he’s getting time and kills everything on the screen. Like there were some AMAZING levels for points that he was skipping or hating on!
From what I interpreted from the rules, you can skip if you die, meaning you can't skip levels, unless you died in the level.

Yeah. He approached this challenge all wrong. He plays like a speedrunner when this is a patience challenge.
Seems like power up spams are what you want .
Enemy spams aren’t that great because they stop giving score when you get 1 up . Unless you can reset the enemy kills which seems difficult . it’s better to farm power ups or check checkpoints if possible . Clearing the lvl fast or pretty decent
At the end every 1-up is worth some points. So it isn't that bad.
Oh I forgot he can't get more than three 1-ups per level. So nevermind🤣
Dave neeeds to do a new run and NOT SKIP unless he dies. This IS so PAINFUL to watch!
Skipping is definitely a strategic thing in this challenge. Sometimes it's good to skip if you know that the level won't give you many points, but it's also hard to tell which ones those are right from the start
"I'm gonna beat this level because I need points" *literally skips the previous level while sitting by the flag pole that would have been an extra life ....
That level with the Roy fight was a godsend he could’ve grinded like inf points at that pipe that dispenses fire flowers
I think what you want is actually a refreshing special. All those coins and powerups are instant GG
I started getting interested in SMM2 because of you, and I finally got the game for christmas a couple of days ago. Even though I'm pretty bad at the game, I love it and I'm currently playing it all the time
The fact that Dave got hit 4 times in a single basic boom boom fight and died straight blew my mind.
For me it was constantly ignoring the safe spot on the left and trying to out-jump the spin attacks

This was awesome Dave! I watched a lot of these runs live when the challenge was on going, so it was great to see you cover this! Fantastic idea for a challenge! You just have to hope for power-up spam from red pipes.

Dave, love you man, but just quick analysis (and I only watch Mario, so not an expert here):
1. If you can get the end (flagpole, axe, etc.) it is 50 points per timer point left
2. Quitting a level, takes up around 15-20 seconds to load the next level (according to the timer on your screen), and that loading time is a waste of timer since you get no points. Finishing a level takes the same time to load the next, but at least you get the points for finishing the level.
3. Even worse though (14:00 in this video), you literally got to the flagpole and quit out without getting it, thus getting no points and wasting the @10 seconds you spent getting to the end, and wasting 17 seconds to load the next level.
4. You can literally get zero points in this challenge and run out of time by quitting levels because they aren't "Little Timmy" levels.
I think the better strategy would probably be to load in a level:
1. Look at the clear time, quit anything that takes over a minute unless you see a TON of coins or a star and a group of enemies, etc.
2. Play all other levels to the end, unless it is a trick/uno mas level, or is a low time level without coins or other points.
I've watched you long enough to know that you get ideas in your head (the Little Timmy thing for instance, I think you said Little Timmy about 15 times by 14:00 into the video), and you get hyper focused on the idea, but at the same time you lose sight of the true goal, which, in this case, is just getting points as quickly as possible, instead you got focused on looking for the optimal level to get points. My logic is that any level that takes a minute or less to clear is probably worth that minute to get the end goal points, as opposed to getting zero points and wasting 17 seconds plus whatever time you spend in the level.

Another thing I noticed, as one ups are only worth 5k points, it would be better to grab just under the 1 up point on the flag pole, as that gives 8k points. In addition, when chain jumping on enemies, Get your one ups for that level maxed, then restart the chain, if possible, because the extra one ups would just go to waste. Also as mentioned by others, time isn't that much of a point giver. Being generous, assuming you took about 10 seconds to beat a level and the timer was at 500 (the maximum) you would get 24500 points. Being generous, assuming it takes about 20 seconds from level to level, because menus. Each level would take 30 seconds, 20*60 = 1200 (20 mins to sec). 1200/30 = 40 (maximum number of levels). You would then get 24500*40 = 980,000. This would get you into 19th, assuming the leaderboard hasn't changed, but in the long run there are other things you can do which would get you a lot more points. But I'm not mathing that because this comment is long enough and others have done thoes calculations.
The lives are 5000 each, 15k per level. You want levels that are fast have huge timers and net you those 3 extra lives. Then after you beat 10 levels you want powerup or enemy dispensers
I feel like skipping without dying isn't in the spirit of the challenge, since like others said, your points stay. I don't think you should be able to skip unless it's the beginning of the level or death.
I’ve always wondered why they even include the score thing in Mario games nowadays when it doesn’t do much. I wish they gave it more meaning
Cause its not hard to implement and many people would probably complain if it is removed but no one complains about its existance

For fun challenges? Like most points or lowest amount of points.
In Super Paper Mario (Wii) it acted/doubled as the xp counter for levelling up.
Interesting challenge, I like that DGR keeps looking for a littlie timmy level forgetting that once you have 3 1ups all the rest are worth ZERO points. Also thinking about it, when jumping on enemies you want to stop once you get 3 1ups and only go to max points and start over then not get the top of the pole.
I think Dave should stop skipping so much especially if the level itself is very small and quick to beat. It's better to take few points than to play the start of several levels by skipping and not get any points for doing so.
The amount of. points you missed by skipping the levels where you could have finished them in under 10 seconds and gotten the time bonus would have helped a lot

True I usually play all of the levels that are under 15 seconds and then once I hit the 10-level limit I skip a lot more hunting for a good level

Here is a tip for enemies that don't die in 1 hit like galoombas, goombrats (smw) & koopas (those are just examples) first bounce of them for points, then use something that kills them for even more points

You slipped so many many many points here... Infinite power ups, end of level skips, checkpoint flag farming... This could of been a HUGE run for you with a little planning and less... Panic haha

Thanks for playing this challenge Dave. I had the same strats when running it to complete 10 levels as quickly as possible and then look for a level with infinite powerups dropping from pipes to rack up the score. Unfortunately I never cracked the 1 million mark.

The reason you didn't get a little timmy level is that they are usually in the normal or hard difficulties. They tend to get enough cheap deaths to raise them out of the easy difficulty mode even if they are otherwise generally easy to beat.

To be fair, score hasn't really meant anything in the Mario Bros. series since... well... the original arcade Mario Bros. It's kinda like the appendix of the body of work that is Mario; it's not at ALL necessary, but you often notice when it's not there.
Except that appendices can be useful...

Dave you really need to analyze what gives you points and and how much. A 500 sec level that takes 8 seconds is TONS of points, check points, power ups, chains and 1-ups. Coins are a bad way to get score unless there is an insane abundance of them.
Every once in awhile you will get a level that is collect all 999 coins. Those ones are incredible haha

Enemy spam isn't what you wanted. Once you get one ups they don't give points anymore

Dave you don't need to have done something to come up with a strategy.
For one thing I noticed is top of flag pole gives you no points but close to the top gives you 4K. So if you have 3 lives already the better option is to go underneath.
No more little Timmy levels.

Gosh, it's kinda crazy with how RNG-based this challenge is~ Your potential for success depends on how good the levels you get are!
The best level you need for this is one where there's respawnable power ups. Run down the clock as much as possible just collecting 1000pts then complete the level.

The reason there is no rule on skipping and skipping is the downside for dying is because you don't want to skip.
The biggest reason I added the death equal skip rule is because without it, people could cheese the challenge by dying on purpose and replaying a great level over and over again haha
@@AverageDeku That too lol, but alot of the time a level you want to keep doing is prob a level you can stay in for as long as you want anyway, so it only really punishes you if you get soft locked out of the area with infite power ups or something.
But I've not seen those spicy runs you've got, maybe infite power ups aren't the way they got so much points.
Either way, great job with the hosting of what is clearly a great idea.
The level around 12:00, could you have went back and forth between the two checkpoints and racked up 2k points each time or just the first?

Before looking at the top20 I was guessing that it would be all over 1M. I was pretty close on that one with only the last 2 not reaching 1M (barely). What I wasn't expecting was the top score. I was thinking 5M likely, 10M maybe. 11M isn't far from what I was thinking but I didn't expect such a huge gap between 1st and 2nd place which means that 11M is really difficult and probably took a lot of tries and planning.
Two or three million is the realistic high score. The only way he got 11 million was that he found a random level on endless easy that was specifically created for this challenge

Time completion scores are so important. If you have a level with 300+ seconds that has a completion of sub 30 seconds play it and get the easy points.

Passes up time bonus when he is literally right at flag.
Time is the number one factor. I race 1-1 in a contest as a kid for high score. Everyone stopped for coins, enemies, etc. I cleared it in 18 secs and crushed their scores.
