Yamaha XT225 Serow Troubleshooting, No Spark

  • We get a XT225 in the shop that was purchased as a non-running bike. No spark, can we figure out why and get it running?

    Nice job! As far as I'm concerned you gave the owner a sweet mod. When he hits the woods he can kill the lights (don't need em) and save battery juice for a heated vest or other devices.

      Cem A good luck, electrical troubleshooting is all about patience. Get a multimeter and a factory wiring diagram and take your time.

      I got lucky finding the issue pretty quick. Sometimes those things can be a nightmare.

    It's got to be one of those aftermarket made in china key switches. I bought one, it's a 4 wire switch with red, brown, Black and white with black tracer. My orig. was Red, brn, blue with yellow tracer and blue with black tracer. Now, when you turn to on, the red and brown have resistance. When off, the others have resistance...no good China!

    Switching off the headlight over volts the stator. Sooner or later, the stator will die and you have caused the owner a big repair bill.

      Interesting concept, but I don’t agree. The system has a voltage regulator. The stator constantly “over volts”, the regulator keeps the operating voltage within the limits of the battery and lights.

    Got spark thanks to you but only getting a sputter won’t start I’m stuck I like the bike I have the ttr 225 as well runs like a top id like to get the xt going I think it’s blown top end but I’m not sure

    I have a XT225 and I believe I don't have everting wired in correctly.
    "I have the same problem just one spark."
    Do you have a 2000 Yamaha XT wiring diagram?

    My bike xt225 is getting back kick. I am getting spark in my sparkplug. But engine won't start. Do u have any idea?

    I wasn't driving my ybr 125 for year. So i decided to fix old issues, so i replace ignition switch, ignition coil and starter relay. The parts are cheap so i didn't want to play with it and check what's wrong. But after replacing this stuff and the others (like cluth) i couldn't start engine. So i chceck whole electric instalation and i was almost going to replace ECU. I hope it will be it :)

      ​@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures Unfortunately it wasn't it. But i am still glad that you show me how to skip ignition switch. I have already bought ECU and it's not as expensive as i thought. :)

      Electrical issues can be frustrating. Take your time, check the easy stuff first. A wiring diagram and a multimeter will definitely help. Good luck, thanks for watching.

      azdesertdog hmm, check the switch. Can’t do anything about the hair, seem to have similar issues.

    My xt started having a weird blinker problem. One side blinks fast as if a bulb is broken. But i got all new bulbs. Blinker relay and even a new blinker housing.
    If i swap the right and left wires the problem switched sides. So it's somewhere in the wiring sadly.
    As it blinks on and off, the engine cuts on and off (with the fast side)
    Very strange. Any ideas?
    I also took apart and cleaned the turning/ horn switch. Not that i don't think.

      Traced wires and they all look ok. No frays no breaks.

      @@georgeponzoni3554 I would start by removing the turn signals one at a time, see if the problem goes away with one of them removed. Maybe look very closely at all the wiring. Engine cutting out makes me feel that a power wire somewhere is possibly missing insulation and grounding against something.

      @@TomsTinkeringandAdventures funny thing is, if I remove the front blinker from the bike (of the side blinking fast) the bike will not start. And the "neutral", "high beam" and turn signal indicator lights, all light up at once (up by the speedometer) when the start button is pressed.
      Very strange.

      I would start eliminating things that would kill spark like the clutch switch, side stand switch, the kill switch. Just bypass all of them. Also check the key switch just like this video.
