  • One secret to creating beautiful dot mandalas is having the right tools. I show you how to use a wooden pencil to create perfect dots in just about any size you'll need. I also show you how to make your own stylus tools with ball-shaped ends, and a simple turntable using a thumbtack, straight pin or seed bead. Even better- these tools are either inexpensive to buy (or nearly free) and easy to make!

    This is brilliant! I actually use a hot glue stick for large dots in the middle and a mini hot glue stick for medium size dots 😊 so many focus on the expensive tools when you can sit with so many things!! Thanks for making this video 😊

    Ive been experimenting and found a knitting needle works and feels comfortable in the hand or for bigger dots the head of a nail can work well for dotting. You insert the nail the same as you would a pin.
    Also. Plastic yogurt lids and similar type containers work well as cheap pallets and it means you aren't sending them to a landfill. I will sometimes even use the yogurt cup (once washed) flipped upside down to have the bottom as my pallet. It sits nice, is harder for my cats to flip or step in, and usually have a recess for containing the paint.
    Good luck in your creative pursuits and I hope life away from the work station is treating you kindly ❤️

      That sounds like a great idea. My only concern would be whether or not the paint will peel out easily once it dries. I have found this doesn't always work well, it really depends on the plastic.

    Loved all these tips! I am just getting into this form of art and couldn't wait, so I used a knitting needle! I have various sizes and it surprised me that the results were pretty decent...some have 2 ends and so changing colour is pretty simple. I can see me saving a lot of money on tools and getting results quite a bit different than the 'usual' just have to go on a scavenger hunt now for little odd shapes....want to try the ends of the box of screwdriver bits to see if they will give different shaped dots....looking for fun in some odd places I know but who knows where the imagination can lead you! Thanks for the good instructions and loved your lazy susan! Will sub and catch up on all your videos.....Im sooooo excited...I have so many ideas already and have not done more than my practice bit on a tiny 3x6 old canvas...I wipe it clean or paint over ...it is my 'practice' board....💖👌🙏 Namaste!

    • @bluequarry
      @bluequarry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome ideas- glad you like the video. You may be an expert by now, but I'd like to suggest that instead of wiping your canvas clean each time, just make your test mandalas on plain paper- even the backs of junk mail envelopes will work. Then you can glue them into a little journal (and u can make that with recycled paper too). It's a great way to keep track of the patterns and color combos you like, and you can look back to see where you started and how much you've progressed.

    What kind of colours can be used for mandala. Can we use acrylic colours of camel or fevicryl brand.

    • @bluequarry
      @bluequarry  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not familiar with those particular brands, but any acrylic paint should work (I've even made dot mandalas with watercolor paint on paper). You just want to sure to get the consistency right so thinker paints may need to be thinned with water. Check out my dot mandala basics video for more info on that: th-cam.com/video/Jevj_x1DrYY/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you for your video I'm just now four and a half minutes in. I wish I had seen this before I purchased a bunch of tools on Amazon. Oh well, I got a question about the ball stylus Jules, should I tip the entire ball into the paint or only half of it? Also last question, the thickness of the paint I'm not quite certain about what the thickness is supposed to be. I've got Apple Barrel multi surface paint. I appreciate your time thank you have a beautiful night. ❤️

    • @bluequarry
      @bluequarry  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I apologize for the delayed response- hopefully you've figured out the best way to do this but here's how I do it: I dip the entire ball into the paint and I thin out my paint with water until it's the consistency of heavy cream. It's really a matter of trial-and-error until you figure out what works best for you.

    Great tips. The turntable wobbles a bit. Doesn't that make it difficult to control the placement of the dots?

    • @bluequarry
      @bluequarry  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes for the 2nd design the turntable wobbles a bit when spinning, but when placing a dot I typically use my pinky to stabilize my hand. If you rest it on the edge of the paper/turntable before adding the dot it's very stable and has only the slightest tilt. For this design, the smaller the bead or pin head, the better.
