Fishing and more specifically fly fishing is very personal. If I had to have someone critique me on my casting style and techniques I probably would give up the sport. Let people fish how they wish and discover their style and approach. All this trash talk on how he fishes gives the entire sport of fly fishing a bad name and makes people feel like you have to be a part of some elite club to fly fish. FISH ON JON! AND ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF IT!

The occasional well-judged suggestion by way of humble guidance, offered as gently as a well presented dry fly, is of course another matter, and entirely welcome. By the way, I have a radical theory about trout: I don't believe they go to casting school either!
I jonothan I was negotiating 6 guided sessions on the Clyde with a man for my christmas.and when a free guided trip to the tees after seeing your videos was a must.any specific flies or tackle other than the black magic nymph of course:)

Gents, if I may; it's not about the beauty of the cast but the beauty of the presentation. Fish cannot see the back cast. The viewer cannot see the fish the fisherman sees but the fish don't seem to mind unless we are going to start talking about additional editing or photoshopping. I find the casting a refreshing relief to al the instructional videos
Charles Lanzieri wouldn't a sudden forward cast (not having a full back cast) could possibly snap your fly off or tangle the leader though? if you didn't have a good knot.i was always under the impression that you need to let the line fully extend behind you before making your forward cast. I'm no expert so correct me if I'm wrong please.
At about 12:00....you had a great "open minded" conversation with your viewers. I would have liked to see you change flies and catch that bugger, but you stayed with it for another cast or two.....and it paid off. Enjoyable to watch. Thanks
On a small rod I would advise using a small large arbour reel. I favour the Danielsons and Lamson Litespeeds but there are many good reels on the market. A small rod IS more difficult to cast period. Optimum rod size for most rivers and even small streams is between 8 and 9 feet.
Very nice river much like the Ruakituri which I fish occasionally fish are bigger here but just as much of a challenge to hook consistently. No grayling though only Browns and Rainbows. Greetings from New Zealand.
Thank you for your advice. The fish don’t seem to care about the size of my loops. In a complex flow environment throwing tight loops, even with mend casts, results in one thing -drag. I use a progressive actioned rod (Sage 389 LL), a light double taper 2 line and a furled leader to catch almost every rising fish, PRESENTATION being paramount using wider loops. There is no right and wrong way to cast a fly line just casting principles.
I'm not sure quite what you are suggesting but Jonathan would leave many an instructor amazed at his fish catching abilities. Watch his videos to see how well he does it. Maybe that is why he was a national champion.

It appears there are many insects flying around. Are there any big trout, 17" - 19", in that stream?
Yeah your casting is a bit awkward but as long as you are catching fish consistently(which you are) then disregard the desk chair critics. Heck, my casting is pretty ugly yet I manage to catch fish all the time.
Other than not letting his back cast straighten out his casting is just fine although he has too much line on the water which is causing drag issues and hooking problems. Strip the line in...don't raise your rod tip to take up slack. You can be stealthy but if your fly and leader drag...game over. I do give him marks for his economical and relaxed casting. I see guys waving their arms around like they're trying to get someones attention. After a couple hours their arms fall off.

Nice video, but IMO there's way too much unnecessary casting. If this was on the small chalk stream carriers down south, the fish would be shooting off upstream.
Very poor casting skills and presentation don't know why you would dress leader up when you're putting main line right over there heads and making slurping noise with fly line and fly take you rhythm down a notch and relax
Jeff Sully I have to agree. And I'm not trying to be critical, as we all have to find our rhythm with casting. I have heard snaps and whips the whole video. I would say constructive criticism because new anglers may see this as normal or even try to replicate it.
