HATCH - BIG SKY PMDs - Montana Spring Creek Fly Fishing by Todd Moen

- Each July, I find myself heading back to my home state of Montana. Over the past 15 years, many of these trips have included an adventure with my good friend and master spring creek angler, Pete Corbett who is owner of Creekside Angling Company in Issaquah, Washington. We like to fish the Southwest region of the state. For this 2013 fly fishing trip, we met in Dillon, Montana. This time Pete fished some of our favorite public water, and we hit the PMD hatch that usually occurs in late June and early July. We were in the right place at the right time! The PMDs popped, coming off in thick numbers, with fish hungry and aggressively rising to chow down on the first big hatch of the summer. The second half of this video shoot was taken on a one-day walk/wade of McCoy's Spring Creek, and we had some pretty good action there as well. Southwest Montana never lets me down!

Amazing how the trout get so large in flat water. Being from the mountains of North Carolina we have more rapids and waterfalls than what i see here. As always, Todd Moen, you have an unreal sense of how to portray fly fishing's excellence in all its glory with your videos. How deep is your pool of perfect fly fishermen and immaculate places that you can go to and film? I mean every single one of your videos just blows me away and always reminds me of the beauty of this hobby and the feeling of always chasing that next bite.
Adam Grasinger Hi Adam! Thanks for the message. It's a lot more complicated I guess than what it looks. Hoping the fish perform when I travel to these locations is just the beginning. It takes a unbelievable amount of time and effort to wrap up a complete video. Sometimes it I'm able to shoot a piece with in 3 days, but most of the time it takes longer than that. I'm able to do a lot in a short bit of time though as I work completely on my own directing anglers on the water where ever I might be.

The nice part of this video to me is you can see how slow one must set the hook. I see people all the time set it so fast and miss fish. In the slow mo here you can really see that timing at work.

02:16, that's a St Croix Legend Ultra, I have a 905.4 in that. I love the coloration on those blanks, takes the sun to really bring out that deep green. I recently got a SAGE so comparatively speaking that rod feels like a dog, but I a humble choice for the esteemed angler, oh, and nice trout.

***** Hi Tsogt! Thanks for the comments. Yellowstone... Hit the Lamar, the confluence of the Madison. It's all good. Park will still be crowed in September though. You can still fish terrestrials, but also chase the big boys up the Madison.
