I was "homeless" for about 4 months in 2018. I actually lived in the woods, in a tent, everything I owned was in my backpack. I was fortunate enough to have an MSR Seagull, and I cooked EVERYTHING I ate in it. It NEVER failed me.
I had the same experience and fell in love with the stowaway. I picked one up at a thrift store while looking for a jacket. It was marked at $15 but the cashier let me have it for $10, She knew I was homeless. being homeless also changed my perspective on society and life like it did for you. I don't see the world the same anymore. I'm doing better now but do miss living in the woods. Kinda makes you realize that you don't need luxury and all kinds of useless possessions to be happy.
I have owned one for a couple years myself and it is a very well made and durable cooking vessel. If I lost mine I would definitely replace it with another. Great review and talking points. Great looking Kuksa as well. Take care. Matt
I bought the 1.6L version about a year ago, and used it as a regular pot in my house, cooking over a gas cooker. I don't know if the heat had anything to do with it but about 4 days ago the tab on the lid has come off, as it's glued or maybe welded on to the actual lid and not riveted or screwed. I originally bought the pot because I wanted to hang it from a tripod using the tab and the locking handle, but I'd advise anyone that plans to use it that way to remove the tab first and weld it afterwards; but don't let that comment dissuade you from getting one, I liked the size, construction and idea behind the lid so much that I bought two of them. Great video as always.
I`ve had mine for a little over a year now. I don`t use it that frequently, but whenever I do it absolutely performs, and it heats up nice and quick even over a small fire like in a mini-stove. Great for making breakfast after a night in the tent :D
The lid can also be used as a skillet by attaching a fish mouth spreader to the lid handle. The spreader can also be used for hanging a ss bottle over a fire.
Just purchased one and my criteria are exactly the same: Stainless steel, long handle, great lid with lock and diameter/tall ratio. It's one of the gear pieces you purchase and use it till the rest of your life.
I have the MSR stainless stacking pots that came out before those (I got them in 1987) and they are still serving me well, but I like the the design of yours better. I think MSR pots are made by Zebra in Thailand, and they make really good stuff. My large pot saved my life once when I was in a sinking boat in a storm in Guatamala, so I guess I have to keep it because I am reminded that I am lucky to be alive every time I take it out to use it. You can always be on the hunt for the perfect piece of kit, but there is nothing more satisfying than a well used and well cared for piece that is always there when you need it. Thanks for the great vids...
I got this one years ago and recently got the bigger one. Nice thing about them is the small one will nest in the big one with the lids both locked on. I agree a pour spout and graduations would be nice! Also, two small holes or another hanging handle so we could string it up over a fire without the lid secured would be cool.
I have used and loved my MSR pot for years also, if they would just add a small pour spout I would not have a single complaint. Great video video as usual guys!
Your first review convinced me to get this pot in the next size up. It has been a great pot. I keep an MSR stove and some beverage packets inside of mine. Thanks for the recommendation.
Thanks for the review. That looks like a really good pot. A hack to easily remove soot from your pots is to coat the outside with dish soap before putting it on the fire. We used this trick in my Scouting years.
Tip: You can get a silicone pour spout to facilitate pouring! I made one of a silicone lid. Sure, it doesn't look very bushcraft but maybe one could construct one of metal to clip on? m.th-cam.com/video/qbk6QsxKiHg/w-d-xo.html
Pathfinder has a new pan that doesn't have a lid that is stainless for 10$. Bought one ,like it. Same type handle locks in place, pretty durable. Hard to go wrong at that price.
Twig stoves are awesome in my opinion. They take a little longer than backpacking stoves, but you never need to buy fuel or throw away empty canisters.
Using one looks kinda fun, but slow...I get inpatient. I have never cooked over a fire...even as a kid I used a Sterno stove and progressed from there. Fire is intriguing me. One thing I will never understand is tea....love coffee...but tea? blehh.
I have the msr 1.1 serving as one of my cook pots and I teamed that with a wood gassifier stove that breaks down and fits inside the pot, I like the setup that I use, pot wise, not the happiest with the stove, much rather have a bush box or the emberlit. but it will suffice for now.
Galen, thanks for the comment. I was just wondering what is the brand of the your gasifier stove? I love using mine. I also have the Ti Emberlit and it's a great stove that takes up no room and is extremely light. I know the Firebox is a great stove and I will be purchasing one soon. I wish Steve had a Ti version of it as it's a little heavy and cumbersome--nevertheless, a great stove. Look forward to hearing from you. - Shane
Shane mine was a no name amazon special I got from there for like 25 bucks. It's a cheap Chinese knockoff off of the silverfire. If I had to do it over again I would have gotten a bushbox.
Galan--ya the cheap Chinese crap is no good. I'm sure if you had the Silverfire (as I do) this would be a different conversation. Silverfire is a great gasifier stove and I have been very pleased with mine--a little big but fits into myToaks system well. When I want to go extra light with my load out, I will always grab my Emberlit Ti stove.... The bushbox I believe is in the same class as the Emberlit? Anyway, I hope one day you can experience a good gasifier stove like t the Firesilver or Solo stove.....peace. - Shane
I have the 775ml pot and the next size up, 1100ml or so? I've used the small one for years usually on alcohol or Esbit stoves. Nice thing is you can keep your dried foods and spices inside.
My Favorite Pot as well, Normally carry the 1.6 ... I also carry Pathfinder Bottle cook set with has the Fish mouth Spreader, and you can Clip in into the lids Handle to make a mini Frying pan for like Bannock or etc. I like that idea about adding marks for Measuring.. maybe Someone should Contact MSR ...Other option would be Laser Engrave it or Maybe Make Dimples with a Snap Punch.
Yeah... I agree with your points. The stainless is fairly thin.... And obviously there's no aluminum bonded to the bottom for heat distribution. They get hot spots... RET hot spots. Your food can burn in a flash. So if you're boiling, totally fine... Bit if you're doing any braising or sauteing.... You have to have a stove that and adjust to a really low heat. Take it really slow and you can do ok... But you won't get food seared. Ok... So, the other plus that you didn't mention... Is that there are four sizes of these pots. I have the 750ml and the 1.6 liter. The smaller one fits perfectly inside the larger. And a small Solo type of twig stove will fit perfectly inside the small 750 ml! Your square twig stove will fit at the bottom of the 1.6 liter. I believe that the smallest size (475 ml) will fit inside your 1.1 liter pot. Lots of flexibility for different situations.
I was interesting of buying one of the stainless steel pot that MSR has to offer but wonder in someone can tell what can you pot inside of this pot .... I mean which equipment like stove , gaz, towel, etc...
My only problem with this MSR is the thin handle...It's long and that is good but the thin handle makes it more difficult to control. But it is a learned/getting used to it deal and not really a bad oversight. I compared it to my Stanley Adventure Prep Pot...and there are good and bad in both...I should do a video me thinks...
I it can also be used as a pressure cooker. mine disappeared and needed a pot ASAP and couldn't get one but I found the 14cm Zebra pot it was a good deal came with fry pan both together would be the ultimate cook set up . just a little info to ya Peace Pops Bushcraft
Krik--thanks again buddy. Will you be reviewing your Fjallraven Stubben pack? I have been using mine and I am very pleased so far. I wears well and I love it for a day pack out in the woods. I am awaiting the new YNOT Wildland Scout pack--I'm sure my wife will be taking it over:( Thanks again Krik.....
I'm still on the lookout for "the" perfect cooking set. This comes pretty close but what I'm looking for is something like this with a fitting stove included. All of the sets which include stoves (for alcohol or wood) have some flaws... Nonetheless I'm really close to buying this pot though :) Thanks for the great review.
Hi everyone could i ask if these pots stick much while cooking something like a stew? obviously on a low heat and keep stirring occasionally but what are the actually like for cooking real meals in?.
I used one of these pots while homeless and cooked everything with it. I cooked, sausage's, ground beef, stew's, rice, noodles, chili, quinoa, shrimp and a bunch of other stuff. Nothing sticked to it, I never did cook eggs in it though. I don't know how that would have turned out.
Hi Turtle: Looks good, maybe I'm being pickey but I aqm looking for a pot with a bale as well so that I can hang it oner a fire when the occasion arises. Otherwise it looks great. Brian 76
775 ml? maybe I just eat a lot but the 1.6 L suffices for when i go camping with my brother or girlfriend. Sometimes even then i throw the pot back on the fire to make more food. but yeah i would agree, really solid design and great for the price.

Been using the same pot for two plus years with no issues. Great buy with nice features.
I made a small modified "s" hook to connect the handle and latch to be able to hang the pot over a fire.

I've had mine for 6+ years and hasn;t failed me yet! I bring steelwool to keep it clean in the woods if I'm cooking food in it instead of water.
Good tip!
I bought this pot because I saw your other video on it and it has yet to disappoint me. Thanks again for a great video!

I got an MSR after seeing your review all the way back when. Still unbeatable for solo expeditions.
Agreed. I really like the shape.
4:08 775ml is LESS than a liter.
Yes, 1 liter is 1000ml. So, 775ml is LESS than a liter.
Hahaha I just notice, Lil jimy wasn't the smartest of the bunch but he was indeed brave.
In point of fact it is 77.5% of 1L
Theres another guy doing a review on the same pot and he called it a 1.1 liter, or 775ml lol.

Great piece of kit, luv mine have had it for years.

Make a lid handle by using ***** or stuff some cork in it
that pot is to small to feed Silent Bob, Jay!
When locking it, you're supposed to put the handle through the pot lid loop, then lock it
