One of the greatest underrated rock tracks of the 80's. The King of Rock n Roll destroyed them in many respects, they became a novelty band. When they are in fact , so much more.
If Prefab Sprout is one of the great under-rated bands of their time (and they certainly are), Martin McAloon is one of the most underrated bass players ever.
When I was at University I worked at a petrol station near Thomas Dolby's house....one day a silver Nissan Primera pulled up and out came Martin....I asked for his autograph and he signed the receipt, "That's the first time that's ever happened" he said, hard to believe?... I just found that receipt tucked into the case of a Prefab Album...11th April 1998 14:08...23.1Litres unleaded £15:00....he even stopped the pump dead on £15, that's timing for you...what a lovely, talented chap.
Dunno if he's underrated. He's indeed a talented chap and perfectly good at what he does , and I wouldn't take anything away from him , but it's clear where the outstanding genius was in that band. And as a band , they were absolutely criminally under appreciated.
@@kasimsultonfan That goes without saying though Mate. Everyone on here watching this knows that. I think the Martinn comment truly carries weight as I have not ever heard anyone ( music press etc mention Martin) . Pad was compared with Macca remember. I don't disagree with You though Pal, a true Genius. 👍
In the mid to late 80's i was on the Continental Trucking run to the then West Germany, and all the while my Cassette player in the Merc, was only playing Prefab Sprout Tapes, on all Eight speakers, they are still my favourite band to this day, and they always will be, i have never seen them in Concert, but now thanks to CD's, they are in my Computer forever. I first heard this Band in 79/80 i was 19, and will be 60 in July, that's 41 years! if that is not Love then i do not know what is.

Paddy McAloon (of the British band Prefab Sprout) great lyricist, has written many great songs that have not or rarely been heard in the U.S. Wendy on guitar is pure eye candy.
Formidable Song. So Brilliant, Too Great To Be A Hit As So Many Songs Do End Up Being Ignored, Sometimes Just By Jealousy. Prefab Sprout ARE One Of The BEST BANDS In The WORLD.
Listened to this 1000s of times in my life, and never ever looked at the lyrics. Been singing “a tuna steak won’t fill the pain” for the 2nd line in chorus 😳
Wow, awesome vibe and energy - true vintage 80s prog-rock poetry! Coming from arguably the best album release in 1988, From Langley Park to Memphis. Still love it today as I did back then. Happy memories 😁
Wendy always elicited a feeling of protection. A beautiful, quiet muse who gave the band that little bit of mystery, that little bit extra. Paddy had the 'go'; the writing, the music, but Wendy got it across the line, and made Prefab Sprout enter our dreams. They were nothing without her quiet, understated beauty.
I love this song - it might be their best, certainly the best off of Langley album. Of course, it means a lot more to me now as a 52 year old as opposed to the 18 year old who bought the album. Regardless of my age, Wendy looks so hot as well.
I sound so different these days, I barely can believe I'm me If I didn't know better, I would swear I was someone else Lord I can't believe, I don't believe I'm me But who on earth could I be? Have you ever felt that way?
To answer your question I would say yes for good reason. I have always been a Sprout fan and Paddy McAloon particularly but fifteen years ago my life changed for the better spectacularly. Not without some pain I might add. I have thought a number of times I can hardly believe I'm me and felt it.

It's a good shout, but I'll politely disagree and say that Bonny is the ultimate.

he Golden Calf
Once upon a time I stalked the
Streets on raining evenings when the
Distant sea blended with the sky
Past Coliseum's filled with brass
On pavements carved from toasted glass
I carried in my heart a word or two
Your dashing horseman all gone away
Left you the stable bill to pay
And now the golden calf has turned to clay
All my feelings dressed in gloves
Couldn't touch your windswept harbour love
White and open-necked you would still play
I'd resort to sleepwalking
To court the mood that fills the sails
With harvest nets and tides don't ever bring
But every night was Halloween, and every friend fell in between
And how capricious nature ruled my mind
Your dashing horseman all gone away
Left you the stable bill to pay
And now the golden calf has turned to clay
All my feelings dressed in gloves
Couldn't touch your windswept harbour love
White and open-necked you would still play
Once upon a time I stalked the
Streets on raining evenings when the
Distant sea blended with the sky
My mouth was full of cigarettes
My hair is full of long-term bets
But you would always make me see the day
Your dashing horseman all gone away
Left you the stable bill to pay
And now the golden calf has turned to clay
All my feelings dressed in gloves
Couldn't touch your windswept harbour love
White and open-necked you would still play
I sound so different these days, I barely can believe I'm me
