    Yes there is a way to check the seal. We use the "dollar-bill test." Take a dollar bill and place it between the door seal and the cabinet. Close the door and check for drag. It doesn't have to be tight, but if there's drag the door seal is seated. Go completely around the door checking for proper seal. If you can shift the bill while the door is closed there's a gap and you'll have to adjust the alignment by tweeting the hinges. You can see more on our website at www.subzerospecialists.com under Tech Help.

    Just completed replacing seals for both the door and the freezer and took care to make sure seals were in place correctly (I think). Before seal replacement, the door was a little tough to open (because of a decent seal maybe? even though seals were in bad shape?) but now, the door is extremely easy to open which makes me think it's not getting a good seal now. Is there a way to check?

  • @SubZeroSpecialists
    @SubZeroSpecialists  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's true, but if the door seal is installed properly you won't need it. It's more crucial when replacing the freezer seal and in that Vedic I use silicone.

      Sub Zero Specialists , hello, could you tell me where to get gaskets for 1996-97 501r and 590 sub zero? Please i really can’t find them

    The French Door model uses a different method to hold the seals. Do you have any suggestions on replacing these?

    Painting is a process and is usually done in a shop. If its just paint that has worn off I would not be too concerned, but I would keep an eye on it, if it looks rusty I would repair before it gets worse.

    The S-Z instruction page reference running a silicone bead against the door. Do you do that?

    I had the gasket replaced in my sub zero fridge.. Same model as in the video.. However, it isn’t providing a vacuumed seal anymore .. Any advice?

    • @SubZeroSpecialists
      @SubZeroSpecialists  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll need to check the temperature in the refrigerator. The vacuum isn't something built into the refrigerator, it's related to the temperature. The warm air outside the fridge contracts when it meets the cold air inside and that's what creates the vacuum.

    Thank you for this video. I ordered factory gaskets for both the freezer and regular refrigerator door (model 632-2). Unfortunately after 3 hours I cannot work the lip of the new behind the retaining clip. Frustration level 11. I'll be watching the tech install it to see what I did wrong. I did not take the door off. I would get the upper corner started, and move horizontally to continue along the top, and gravity would somehow pop the corner out. That happened about 8909809 times.

      Try loosening the screws a little until they almost come out, that should help.

    Thank you for your video. Very informative. I have a sub zero freezer 600 series from 2002. The repair man changed the gasket and on the top right side there is a small condensation that has been impossible to solve. An suggestions? Thanks

    I took the whole metal piece off and put the new seal in by hand a quarter inch screw at a time. Without taking off the door.

    Refrigerator was at room temp due to power outage. Had a new gasket but had never installed it. Once on the door wouldn't stay closed. Put the old one back on and still wouldn't stay closed. Checked all clearences on shelves etc. Turned fridge on and clamped door closed. After temp got to 40 deg door worked. IDK

    • @SubZeroSpecialists
      @SubZeroSpecialists  ปีที่แล้ว

      When the refrigerator is warm the plastic breaker strips expand and sometimes rubs against the plastic door liner, as the temps pulls down the plastic shrinks and then the door clearance resumes. Hope that explains it.

    Great video...thank you! Some paint has come off the surface where the gasket would seal On our fridge. Do you recommend painting it?

    @SubZeroSpecialists  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's great. I said in the video that I took off the door to facilitate the viewing. I never take the door off when I'm in a customer's house. I'm curious, how long did it take you and are you a homeowner or a technician?

    Your phillips head looks different than typical...am I right? If so, what are you using and why? I am thinking the phillips head you are using is protecting the pointy part so you don;t stab the seal!

    Thank you for the thorough production re:gasket replacement.
    You commented on the difference in gasket quality. Do you have a source for the original quality Sub-Zero 550 freezer gasket, and is the Supco brand(made in Canada) of decent quality.. Thank you for the good explanation.

    Hello JJ. The directions sent with the door seal call for using a "thin' bead of silicone where the new gasket will be seated. Looks like you don't bother with that. Comment??

    Great videos, JJ, do you sell parts too? I need a door hinge for a 550 and I can't find the entire assembly anywhere. I bought a house with a 550 installed and they put wood paneling on the door to match cabinetry but left the factory hinge and now it's failing due to the added weight. Any advice or help finding these parts would be greatly appreciated.

      Chris Stark you can buy new SZ parts from 800-304-0153. That hind is still available

    Similar problem as Kim below: replaced food side gasket on model 695 without issue. Prior door felt had "tight" seal with strong effort to open. Now very easy to open. Anyway to ensure seal is top notch?
    Thanks

    If you have bought the new gasket and getting ready to replace yourself. Trust me, unless you are very handy, pay the tech to come out and do it right. Everything is easy till you have to somehow fit the new gasket to the bracket without it coming off while you are doing it. Took me 3 hours and it still isn't right......:(

      Sorry to hear that John, it is difficult to do the first time, that is why I make the videos. It took me quite awhile to learn the skill when I first started, and I've been at it for over 50 years. You might also want to review my video "Principles of door seal installation" it may help to clarify the process.

    The instructions specify putting silicone in the corners behind the seal. I had the same problem on a 601F freezer and the silicone solved it. If you need a copy of the instructions reach out to me and I will send it to you.
