Ive been looking for an explanation of that passing chord. I love the sound and hear it by almost all gospel musicians. Im going to practice this and slow it down. Thank you!
I find it very interesting how similar this is to jazz harmony. What you describe as passing chords are secondary dominant chords that can indeed be inserted between every chord change, something jazz guys do all day. Maybe the real difference between jazz progressions and gospel progressions is the use of inversions and color tones. But more than anything it is the feel and phrases you are using. Lovely lesson!
I'm a fairly advanced jazz pianist and even though I'm familiar with the devices used here, the way things are played are a tad foreign to me. There's an aesthetic all this gospel playing has. A lot of grace notes, a lot of drop 2 triads. Alot of what I would call rudimentary (not to mean simple) structures that are skilfully embellished. ie.. 4-5-1 is never played using those bass notes. You will always see things like the 3rd and 5th used in the bass along with passing diminished and secondary dominants.
^^^^this guys is extremely accurate... being a jazz player approaching gospel music, you end up sounding very basic even while using advanced subs, and altered chords because Jazz harmony... while it can reach the point of utter nonharmonic and arhythmic pipe dreams...it is still more structured than modern contemporary gospel harmony... at least from my perspective. guys like Cory Henry come to mind
Thinking about origins - it wouldn't surprise me if many of the ragtime composers (one of the precursors to modern jazz) also played in church. So you might expect some similarities. I don't know - might be worth researching.
@@spindriftdrinker We also need to remember that passing chords have been a part of Western Music Harmony since the 17th century. They were not invented in church. Gospel and jazz are both based on the same old harmonic concepts, but evolved dramatically into something that creates a very different and to me a much more exciting listening experience. It is just fascinating how evolution works.
@@musictrainingonline Not trying to be argumentative, but I am just curious - how do we know that passing chords were not invented in church? J.S. Bach did a lot of his composing for church.
Super talented brother. I get lost in passing chords but your explanation on dominants want to resolve was the clue. Any other explanation for passing chords is great.
Your new place is a bomb 🔥 loving the arrangements , the sunray 😊 Those beards looks good too 😁 Then the camera is a wonder , it's too good to be true Thanks for another Tutorial bro
Awesome! I have subscirbed to ur channel. this is gonna help me alot. Whats the name of the keyboard you using and what voicing are you using/ combining?
Brother, you go through these inversions way to fast. I know how to slow down you tube but I think you should go a little slower with your explanations. The content is wonderful
I think you also have to understand this is a video that you can rewatch are stop it’s a TH-cam video people. And with that being said which the amount of time it takes to put these videos together. It’s easier to just take notes and stop video lol my the lord bless
5:55-5:58 I screamed. Do you realize that you pedagogy is second only to your GIFT? THANKS . I needed a refresher on dominant dom7 passing chords. I was obsessed with half-step away and chromatic mediant away related passing chords (dim7,dom7,maj7) I forgot about .. DUH...THE FIFTH (subdominant!).
One trick you should use (for beginners) is learn how to play in 1 key(use transpose to bring into the key of video), when u know a key it would help to unlock furthers steps in unlocking your skills. Hope this helps 👍
We have lessons on upper structure triads and many other Gospel Theory concepts in the Gifted Hands Academy. You should join if you're serious about improving your playing.
Thanks brother for the lesson. Any advise for us bass player to support and follow embellishments and passing chords? Because these aren't in the chord sheets
That's a great question...for embellishments bass players don't need to change the fundamental note they're playing since the function of the harmony isn't changing. As far as passing chords go, if the keyboardist is going to throw in tons of passing chords or substitutions it's best to discuss it with the band and agree on what the changes will be so everyone can be on the same page.

Hope he sees this comment. Brother is talented but not a good teacher in my opinion.
I was just thinking to myself the same thing. It went from Mary had a little Lamb to Ave Maria real quickly. I guess this is not for beginners.
