I am planning on watching this video many times until I learn the concepts. This is gold for learners. The delivery of the message I find it perfect ! 👍🏼
This is the clearest explanation I've found on this potentially complex topic! Many of the other youtubers start with complicated 11 or 13 chords and my eyes just instantly glaze over lol
Been playing over 30 years but for some reason still watched this. Guy does a really good job explaining what is a technical subject, mainly because most players just do certain chords because they know they work, to a beginner though it can be puzzling. Really good video, well done.
These are all concepts I already employ, but I still love watching videos about them, and really have to commend you on your teaching style. Very short and to the point, I made sure this with some friends that are getting into passing chords.
Go hug your parents for giving you the chance to learn and be so expert. I am sure they sacrificed for you to have lessons and music. I wish I had your skill, you make it look easy.
Really helpful. Thank you! Piano isn’t my first instrument, but I have a good theory background from playing saxophone. Many of these videos get bogged down in reteaching basic material which can get in the way of the underlying lesson. Love how you have the background information in other videos to help everyone!
This was brilliant, Ted - thank you. I was familiar with these ideas, yet the sequential synthesis of each point into such a malleable progression made this lesson immediately usable and more profound. I'm a guitarist and found drop-3/drop-2 options with inversions and bass movements that instantly opened up exciting voice-leading avenues. I guess I wasnt playing revelatory things but it reminded me to be more cognisant - a good thing. Yes, Barry Harris is a goldmine.... Some standards come to mind like: A child is born (I love that Imaj7 - ivmin6 like Bbmaj7 - Ebmin6/Bb, back and forth), Who can I turn to?, even All the things you are and Autumn leaves lol. I often write and play chord-melody solo guitar, or accompany in small groups (with the occasional solo 😅) so lessons like these help me gaze through a different lens at familiar things. I'll study and elaborate on this lesson at length with my own arrangements. Excellent professional content. 😊
wow this is amazing this is the first time i have understood passing chords thank you so much well i request you make a video for each type of passing chords so that they are is no rush in them
great video. The only thing I'd add is doing it on a set of keys that I could see the keys being pressed above your video of your hands pressing down on the keys.
This is a SUPERB lesson. So clear, and yet such impactful, useful concepts for composing and improvising. It really reflects your “Piano Fluency” name.
Thank you for this video. This is the best video I’ve seen on passing chords. I especially liked the extending back portion. Really gives freedom and ideas for my own playing
Well, that's the best overview of passing chord concepts I've seen. I almost understand it! But, seriously--Thanks. This bears some real study and experimentation.
Wonderful lesson on transitions. And absolutely beautiful playing. Also realized I have been misnaming many of these chords. Eg f# dim, ive been calling it a D7 augmented.
I cannot wait to practice all you shared! I like and subscribed and cannot wait to wait to hear more. I aspire to play like Beegie Adair and all you explained definitely helps!
Nice video. I was expecting to just see dim chords and descending dominants, but you had many cool ideas. I’ve done #4 half dim, 4 mn, 3 mn, b3, 2 mn 6 then whatever where the b3 can be either dim (simple) or minor major 7, a Bill Evans idea, super cool chord which I’ll have to spell. In Bb it would be, bass up, Db Bb E Ab C Eb Gb. And then for the whatever, the penultimate chord, I love a Bb dim over 5 pedal - F G Bb Db E A. I’m looking forward to trying out your version. Great stuff!
Good stuff… I struggle with dominate chords. Now I need to apply this to every key. This may take awhile without a pdf of some sort. Good stuff though. Thanks
i feel like i can understand this and lots of other music theory videos conceptually but have trouble implementing what i learn and figuring out how to practice the skills effectively
Tritones wants to resolve. G7 has b and f as its tritone interval And Db7 has f and b as its tritone interval. It’s the 3rd and 7th for g and the other way around for d. Also g and db are also a tritone away from each other. Since there is only 1 tritone interval per key and that tritone is found in the dominant 7 chord often, it likes to resolve to the tonic of the key. For instance G7-C now Db7 is not in the key if C major, but since it incorporates the same tritone just the other way around that tension can resolve to C as well cause it’s the same tension that G7 has. Also Db is only a half step away from C making it resolving down in a half step. This is also common in jazz, known as sidestepping .You can also do it with for instance just Db Maj7 To C Maj 7 It doesn’t resolve the same way, but it feels like you are moving from one place to another. When you add the tritone as Db7 it resolves even stronger

Hey, love these lessons you should come out with a book covering these kind of topics Id definitely buy it
What about a book on Reharmonization?
I just play around on the piano when songwriting; can't read notes so play by ear. Videos like this inspire me to practice more... Thank you!
Very straightforward and understandable workshop for passing chords.
Thank you!
Excellent ! Very useful techniques to embellish any chord progression in songs.
That is an absolutely brilliant lesson. Will be referring back again and again.

Great video. The way you broke it down makes it very clear.

Great Lesson. I am a guitar player, and I will use these concepts in my playing.
Great tutorial. I lost you at the "extending back" section, but I'll be watching this again -- and again some more. Thanks.

Those who wish can achieve by putting in the time and effort to reach their goal. It's not too late until your last breath.
You can start studying, bro, give it a chance.

Your teaching is top notch
I like your style and tone of teaching.. Looking forward to learning from your videos
This is very helpful. Thanks Ted!
I'm a guitarist and really enjoy your videos. Perhaps something about pedal tones? They can work well in jazz turnarounds. Great stuff, thanks!
Bro thank you for helping out the musicians who are really dedicated to improvement with this super helpful knowledge 🙏🏽 time to go practice
I love this break down God bless you for me
This is an outstanding lesson! Thank you 🙏

What specifically about dominant chords? Implimentation?
Thank you really clear and helpful
thank u for the free chord atlas!!
Fantastic video! Thank you so much!
Awesome lesson! Thank you so much!
I love how you teach
Strong work! 🎉
Love this, thank you!
17:06 its a bit too much for me,but its great to be shown whats really going on at last.
Thank you, Sir!🥰
Thanks for everything sir
The D7 can be formed from the Bb Bebop scale (a la Barry Harris). Also, from that scale, an alt D7 if you want.
Molto interessante. Grazie davvero.
Thank you so much!
Good stuff!!!
such a great vid!
very nice!
Billy JOel used secondary dominants a lot.
Soo owsome
kind of advance for me...................... but i love it, thanks Sir
My brain hurt like a warehouse
It had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things
to store everything in there
This is so nice😊
I would love it to be in the key of F major😢
Bravo
Tak!
i feel like i can understand this and lots of other music theory videos conceptually but have trouble implementing what i learn and figuring out how to practice the skills effectively
Short answer - try putting this in different keys! Long answer - join my program! :) email me at ted@pianofluency.com
I wish you were playing this in C 🤣.
I wish you weren't such a nooob 😆

How can I get note to follow or to use at home for practice.... Practical
Please 🙏 i need a written note to follow the pass cords
F'n cool

bro. im 28 is it too late to be as good as you?
No mate it’s not late rather it’s early just be determined and be consistent when exercising
What have I even been doing all these years
literally 😭😭
please. I want to know 4/4 beat on piano
i just wish I could understand it quicker...i will have to look at it several times...but good stuff
I feel like I'm watching a Steven Universe fight
Please always play in C for beginners 😢😢😢
if you're a beginner and have trouble in other keys, try watching my video on transposition :)
absolutely did not understand the tritone substitution
Tritones wants to resolve.
G7 has b and f as its tritone interval
And Db7 has f and b as its tritone interval.
It’s the 3rd and 7th for g and the other way around for d.
Also g and db are also a tritone away from each other.
Since there is only 1 tritone interval per key and that tritone is found in the dominant 7 chord often, it likes to resolve to the tonic of the key.
For instance G7-C
now Db7 is not in the key if C major, but since it incorporates the same tritone just the other way around that tension can resolve to C as well cause it’s the same tension that G7 has.
Also Db is only a half step away from C making it resolving down in a half step. This is also common in jazz, known as sidestepping .You can also do it with for instance just Db Maj7
To C Maj 7
It doesn’t resolve the same way, but it feels like you are moving from one place to another.
When you add the tritone as Db7 it resolves even stronger
The explanation take to long
Like some of your piano tips but limit your introduction .
Interesting, but it was hard for me to listen. Because the piano is not tuned correctly.
Too bad the piano sound is so distorted that is unpleasant to follow.
