Dan Aykroyd is a unique guy who has never changed. He has always straddled the line between being really square and respectable and being absolutely nuts. It's not just a comedy routine with him, but it seems to work.
Aykroyd and Ramis were such a great duo. Their personalities appeared so VERY different with their mannerisms, and yet their humor was almost identical. To watch them, one would think Harold was the laid back straight man to Dan's fast-talking exuberance, but then you realize they're both the same shade of nutzoid evil genius... Funny how that works.
Calling him a square is a high complement. Round people are folks who can be manipulated/rolled into any position of belief and behavior. I am all square. Just try rolling me. I live and think the way I want. I could care a whit what others think of me. But, I do care about pursuing facts and logic.
First movie I remember watching in theater, I was four years old at the time and when that library ghost yelled I remember jumping out of my seat and screaming. At first my parents asked me if I wanted to leave and I said no, and enjoyed the rest of the movie. I laughed at the Stay Puft marshmallow man.
I hid in the back of the station wagon after that scene. (I saw it at a drve-in) Also when those arms reach out of the chair and drag her away. And when those eggs where exploding. I didn’t get any of the jokes. It was a horror movie for me at that age.
Wow now I look at them and think there old and I can't imagine them being 20 or 30 acting but here they are looking young and on top. Crazy how fast time goes. 👻😱
0:39 : in those days, when someone said "lots of special effects" it was something to look forward to. These days that means the film is ALL special effects and no actual acting or plot
@@quietizkept I know it's fun to crap on CGI (I do it, too, so I'm also ridiculing myself!) but the truth is that the majority of feature films and TV shows that you see today have lots and lots and LOTS of CGI added in post-production, so much so that it can be mundane things like background buildings, a couple of extra cars on the street, trash on the street, clouds in the sky, even people way far off in the background that you aren't even paying attention to. My point is that you see a ton of CGI every day (assuming you watch something on your TV every day, which is pretty much all of us) and you don't even know it. It's the TV shows and movies that utilize CGI front-and-center, likely with low budgets, that *obviously* look like CGI that rub us the wrong way, and so we then paint the use of the technology with the same giant paintbrush by saying things like "CGI sucks, I wish they would make things the way they used to with practical effects!". You should search for "behind the scenes" of your current favorite shows, and if those clips are available, you'll be shocked how much CGI is involved, and how great it looks!
The original movies really needed Bill Murray to make the films stand out. Dan Aykroyd and the other guys alone with their serious passion wasn't enough. Having the cynic Bill Murray who didn't believe in ghosts is what made it work, and what the newer films lack.

Amazing that I watched Ghostbusters last night for the 1st time in many years & this pops up in my recommendations on YT! It's almost supernatural!!! 👀 👻
1984 was the best year in America, defy anyone to name another year better. 84 had the music, movies, Olympics, re-election of Reagan, America was at its peak
The magic that was about to unfold that Friday, man...🤯 Actually, from an entertainment standpoint, the entire year of 1984 was a godsend. I wasn't even 2yrs old yet when Ghostbusters hit theaters, so needless to say, I didn't see it until it's later airings on TV as the movie of the week & the Real Ghostbusters cartoon, but seriously, the content that dropped in '84 shifted the culture! Wish I was a little bit older to experience it firsthand
I was a sophomore in high school. Saw the movie when it came out. Movie took America by storm. Bill Murray was already a household name, GB turned him into a living legend. ("The flowers are still standing!") The song was everywhere!
This clip proves what Aykroyd is currently saying on his 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' promo tour: that he (and the late Great Harold Ramis) is responsible for the current boom in paranormal programmes. Aykroyd and Shirley MacLaine both went 'Out on a Limb' at the time to raise awareness of a hidden dimension in lock-step with our own. 😎
When Dan mentioned having a dream about his paternal grandfather waving to him and finding out the next day he had died, it reminded me of the story my mother told me of dreaming of er mother the night she died and her mother waving at her and then an old friend of her mother;'s already deceased taking her by the hand
...but at least we got to experience it during a very critical time in human history! We are the first generation who has the ability to look at our past in such brilliant detail. I see myself getting stuck here.
Johnny at his best. There was no one better before or since. I loved Aykroyd in "Dr. Detroit" as well as "Nothing But Trouble", two of his more obscure films. He hit the jackpot when he married his then co-star Donna Dixon.
Still my favourite movie of all time. People call it a comedy. While one of the funniest movies ever, I prefer call it an Epic. Harold Ramis and Dan Ackroyd were such great writers and all the actors were amazing. John Belushi and Eddie Murphy were originally slated to star in Bill Murray's and Ernie Hudson's roles respectively, and although that would've been interesting, I am glad that didn't happen.
Harold Ramis might be one of the most underrated writers/directors to ever make a movie. Genius level understanding of what is entertaining, in my opinion. And knowing when not to go too far over the heads of the audience.
I was 22 when the movie came out. loved it. A lot of people don't know this, Dan was in a show called Coming up Rosie in the early 70's in Canada. He played the Scottish janitor. It was a family show and an afterschool favorite of mine.

@@sirkonivaric yes, but it is only noticeable to those who are #ActuallyAutistic actually, because his is the type that TV/movies don't show, unlike the savant type or the non verbal/high support needs, which are the 2 types that are shown on TV often. Dan's autism is what most autistic I think are actually like. "Asbergers" is not a accepted term any more because it is basically a functioning label and this is actually very harmful towards autistics, it also has Nazi connections too
@@aussiefurbymogwaifan6621 Actually I looked it up. Dan recently admitted to being diagnosed with aspergers, so I guess you guys were right.
Johnny = Forever Cool!
Dan = Forever Cool!
Bill = Forever Cool!
Ed said You are correct Sir.
I LOVE Dan ...He admitted to having Asbergers...a very smart guy..He also is a big believer of UFO's...not really such weird stuff...nice guy
Went to my ex's high school in Ottawa--where yes he was a legend
You owe Mr. Aykroyd an Apology.
Although as someone who is #ActuallyAutistic, asbergers is infact a outdated diagnosis term and comes under the autism spectrum these days. Many other autistic people will say the same thing
@@aussiefurbymogwaifan6621 My nephew is in the Autism Spectrum. Thanks for the update. This interview was from uite a few years back so they may have still call it Asbergers then...Again thanks for update.
AsPergers isn't really a thing now. He's just on the spectrum.
I miss Johnny Carson.
Me too 😕
Get over it.

Dan Aykroyd is a Genius. A real genius, thats how he got his wife Donna Dixon she said it was the thing that attracted her
And they make you laugh!! I love him in driving Miss daisy
He stole her from Paul Stanley, who is still pissed about it. He wouldn't say anything nice about Dan in his autobiography.
He is so on the spectrum.
Mr. Chopsticks she probably had some say in the matter. It’s not like he had a gun to her head lol
@@opaljk4835 Tell that to Paul Stanley, not me. I know that.
Dan Aykroyd is a unique guy who has never changed. He has always straddled the line between being really square and respectable and being absolutely nuts. It's not just a comedy routine with him, but it seems to work.
That’s his charm.
He's on the autism spectrum. So was Darryl Hannah. They both talk a lot about it.
This interview just made me realize that Dan Aykroyd and Ray Stantz are the very same person.
Also hear Dennis Miller talk about his side gig as a security guy.

I wish I could go back to 1984, though I'd do things a little differently this time.
I loved watching their films when I was a kid, they were on my wavelength, and are still on it when I watch them now.
Love these guys ❤
I loved to watch johnny Carson on the tonight show
It's on pluto.tv
First movie I remember watching in theater, I was four years old at the time and when that library ghost yelled I remember jumping out of my seat and screaming. At first my parents asked me if I wanted to leave and I said no, and enjoyed the rest of the movie. I laughed at the Stay Puft marshmallow man.
I hid in the back of the station wagon after that scene. (I saw it at a drve-in) Also when those arms reach out of the chair and drag her away. And when those eggs where exploding. I didn’t get any of the jokes. It was a horror movie for me at that age.

Sounds great. Can’t wait to see this movie!
Wow now I look at them and think there old and I can't imagine them being 20 or 30 acting but here they are looking young and on top. Crazy how fast time goes. 👻😱
Still a wild and crazy guy!

I had such a crush on Bill Murray back in the day.
Bill is still putting out great movies. Not sure what Dan's been doing.

So good, we're enjoying it almost 40 years later. 👍
Bill Murray is hilarious.
1984 is the epitome year of the 1980s.
Class of 84 here so I completely agree :)
Indeed. Much happened in 1984!
Cobra Kai never dies!
Many argue it's '83, '87, and '89. But i'll stick with the '84. 1985 may come into the second.
@@FodorPupil Freakin' A!!! 🤟
0:39 : in those days, when someone said "lots of special effects" it was something to look forward to. These days that means the film is ALL special effects and no actual acting or plot
Word. In CGI, it can be the literal apocalypse and it’ll put me to sleep. Even corny practical fx and real actors are much more entertaining to me.
I could've read that same comment in a newspaper review back in 1984
@@quietizkept I know it's fun to crap on CGI (I do it, too, so I'm also ridiculing myself!) but the truth is that the majority of feature films and TV shows that you see today have lots and lots and LOTS of CGI added in post-production, so much so that it can be mundane things like background buildings, a couple of extra cars on the street, trash on the street, clouds in the sky, even people way far off in the background that you aren't even paying attention to.
Pretty sure cynical film snobs back then felt the same about practical effects too.
Bill Murray has a gift for being understated and hilarious
Aykroyd is a force of nature, the best salesman in the world!
There is no Dana only Zul!
My... What a lovely singing voice you have there!
Lmao! CLASSIC!
I need a time machine. Once I get back I’m just gonna blow it up and stay in the early, mid 80’s.
Great years.
You'll need it to get back again lol
Take me wIth you. Just drop me off at January 1, 1980 so I can relive the 80's. And no, I won't be returning to 2021.
Sounds like a plan, I’ll get to meet my wife even sooner. And be happy longer.
He never left character!
The original movies really needed Bill Murray to make the films stand out. Dan Aykroyd and the other guys alone with their serious passion wasn't enough. Having the cynic Bill Murray who didn't believe in ghosts is what made it work, and what the newer films lack.
They had the stright man, enthusastic, cynic and everyday man. it's how it worked. That said I did like Afterlife.
I enjoyed seeing this video of Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray on the Johnny Carson show, just before the release of their movie the Ghostbusters!
Notice the audience isn’t force to laugh or clap. We need to get back to that.
I think they still only have applause signs and warm up acts. Pretty sure there’s no one forcing people to laugh on talk shows. The ones I’ve been haven’t

Very respectful old school men. It is always a pleasure to see this kind of show.
1984 was the best year in America, defy anyone to name another year better. 84 had the music, movies, Olympics, re-election of Reagan, America was at its peak
The cars were slow but people were fast ; )
And my son was born in 84, so there you have it! A very good year!!
I love Dan Aykroyd!
Groundhog Day is a good film. Multiple viewings, you see something new that you formerly missed.
You are so right! It’s a great movie! Every time I watch it I pick up on something I hadn’t noticed before. I love the transformation he goes through.
Groundhog Day is one of my favorite movies!
Awesome movie!
I still catch new clues in Fight Club.
I had to watch the scene a lot of times when he was Bronco, to hear what he said to Nancy 😂
Went to the theater to see Ghostbusters when it first came out. It was amazing.
LOVE Dan& Bill!
Totally agreed!
I think The X-Files had a much greater influence on pop culture and people’s general interest in the paranormal.

Great geniuses and great DUDES:
Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray 😍❤️💜💚💛💙💖🥰
Aykroyd is why the original Ghostbusters worked because he BELIEVED in the medium of ghosts and science's connection. It was a passion for him!!
AFTERLIFE is the BEST and SINCERE tribute to anybody I've ever seen the final battle at the end had me in tears 😭😭🌹💖 the entire yime
When Dan mentioned having a dream about his paternal grandfather waving to him and finding out the next day he had died, it reminded me of the story my mother told me of dreaming of er mother the night she died and her mother waving at her and then an old friend of her mother;'s already deceased taking her by the hand
Dan Aykroyd puts aspects of his own personality and experiences into characters he portrays, I admire that in him, and he's also pretty adorkable.
This is awesome history right here.
Wow, that’s why Bill is the GOAT...telling the king of late night to lighten up

Yes
Johnny at his best. There was no one better before or since.
I loved Aykroyd in "Dr. Detroit" as well as "Nothing But Trouble", two of his more obscure films. He hit the jackpot when he married his then co-star Donna Dixon.
" Dan is a wreak " he sounds it and I believe it. 👍🇺🇲
Wreck?
