Bedtime Story video was completely inspired by all the female surrealist painters like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. It was exhibited and it is permanently kept in different art galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art as well the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Making the clip reportedly cost US$5 million in 1994 (US$8.04 million in 2017), making "Bedtime Story" one of the most expensive music videos of all time. It was the most expensive video at the time of its release, alongside the clip for her single "Express Yourself" (1989). Due to the vast number of digital effects required for the video, post-production lasted for weeks.

This movie also inspired some of the sequences in the video (clips set to Vogue remix):

She made a recreation of some portraits of Remedios Varo, Remedios its not considered surrealistic painter, she hate that tittle infact, her work is considered in the magical mystical fantasies line, that's why Madonna and the Madonna's team choose her paints from the video, the clip is completely in mystical, fantasy, magic line , personally I don't think she based her video with the Leonora work but who knows...

"Bedtime Story" is simply one of Madonna's most iconic, yet underrated, single releases ever. Its music video is as enchanting as the song. Perpetually a piece of art.

The music video recreates several paintings by surrealistic artists Remedios Varo and Dorothea Tanning (check out their amazing artwork).
This was the first music video in history to be concidered a work of art. It was actually acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and it's permanently displayed there as the very first piece of video art.
It was directed by Mark Romanek (same as the Rain video) and it contains many elements that reflects the song lyrics. The spinning box for example was taken from the movie Hellraiser, that is about a puzzle box that opens the doors to another state of perception beyond tbe human limits of experience. The spinning dancers are called dervishes. In sufism (the mystical side of Islam) they say that when they twirl they get unconscious and they become one with God.
The video also contains elements from Jungian psychology such as the representation of the collective unconscious and archetypes.
I really recommend you to react to the live performance. You'll love it.

Her silver outfit in the beginning is Gucci. She looks fierce! She had a pajama party at Webster Hall 1995 that was amazing. I live for the song "secret" and human nature! Enjoy!

It's a piece of art! She really went there, this is so avant garde and so different to your average pop video. Just like Bad Girl it is a video to watch several times, put headphones on and really get lost into it.
I'm glad you loved it so much, i have no doubt you will love her next era, the Ray Of Light era with videos like Frozen and Power Of GoodBye because she carried on that route she went with this song.
This video is one of the most expensive of all time btw.

Yay!!! I love this video too. Slightly rivaled by the next two videos - Human Nature and I Want You.
Such a creative period for Madonna. A very fun period to revisit. So happy you’re enjoying it too.
The tone is very different for the next 2 videos, but you’ll still appreciate the art of them.

I remember she did a whole event on Mtv for the premiere of this video. It was unlike any videos being made at the time. She's always been innovative and a real artist in a pop world full of prefabricated, producer driven interchangeable acts.

Bedtime Story has always been my fav video from day 1. Despite the song not performing well, the video got lots of airplay on MTV and VH1. They did a Pop-up Video for it which will give you all sorts of facts about making the video.
The director begged Madonna to participate in the video when her album was released long before Bedtime Story was chosen as a single. He did such a fab job!

I adore the transcendental vibe of the Bedtime Stories era.... It rounded off the Like A Prayer/Breathless/Erotica/Stories era of time (my favourite) and also with THIS video and these trip hop, melancholy, supernature vibes really do tie into where she went next.... just beautiful..... nearly in the Ray of Light era ;-)

Its cool seeing your reaction - it totally blew our minds when it came out in the early 90's - her best period! She co-wrote the song with Bjork so she probably got some surrealist insipation from her!

Might I suggest Bedtime Story Reinvention Tour Backdrop before you move on to the next era. All of the background effects for that tour are not just amazing but some can stand alone as high concept videos! Of these, the most iconic are likely" Bedtime Story" and "The Beast Within". maybe consider reacting to both.

I agree with you it’s her best video. I remember it was such a big deal that they premiered the video in movie theaters, preceding a Woody Allen movie which I can’t recall. I was overjoyed seeing it on the big screen! If you do a quick google of this video, you’ll find it recreates many famous works of art, as many have pointed out here. My favorite video, as I’ve said, and a Top 10 on my favorite Madonna songs list.

I’m not necessarily Madonna fan but this must be one. Of the greatest music videos ever made. It’s clear the director has seen some Kubrick and Tarkovski

  • @amedeo29
    @amedeo29 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Trivia- I recall in an interview that Madonna said the song is a play on the notion of “let’s sleep together” by making it a literal interpretation of going to bed together. To sleep and dream together, to get unconscious..
I may be remembering incorrectly, perhaps someone else could confirm, but I thought the images were intended to be snapshots of various “dreams”, which would explain the ethereal mood, and why each of the images/scenes don’t seem connected (like individual dreams).
This video, for obvious reasons, is a fan favorite. It’s also considered by many critics to be one of her most under appreciated singles in her career. It didn’t chart well anywhere. The electronic music scene wouldn’t really go mainstream for another couple years yet with acts like Orbital, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, and Daft Punk. Those groups existed at this time, but weren’t really mainstream yet. This album came out while America was still embracing grunge and alternative rock.

Close...it was never about going to bed with someone else. It was created to resemble all the crazy shit we experience when we dream. Surrealism at its best! Definitely one of her best videos ever, and that's saying a lot for Madonna! I was shocked that it wasn't well received by radio...from the 1st time I played it I thought it would be a SMASH! As far as it 'not charting well anywhere', in the United States, the song peaked at #42 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (becoming the first Madonna single since "Burning Up" (1983!) not to reach the top 40). It spent a total of seven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. Also, the song was HUGE in dance clubs and reached #1 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart, where it spent 16 weeks on the chart. It also charted on various Billboard genre charts, including the Rhythmic Top 40 at #40, and the Top 40 Mainstream at #38. It did not reach its potential on the US Billboard Hot 100, but it did chart well in its genre.

Hi there beautiful, im so glad you enjoyed the video. Like previously mentioned by another commenter the video is inspired by a few profound surrealist artist. Woman artists. Bjork wrote the song for madonna. The video and song are supposed to mimic a dream. It plays in muesums across the globe in support of modern art. I do think you should watch it a few more times so u can pick up on the symbolism. For example at one point she is pregnant and white doves fly forth from her stomach. White doves in. Christianity are symbolic of the holy spirit and peace and a new beginning. The idea is she gave birth to that. There are literally many dozens of symbols in this music video. U should give us an analysis video of this music video, it also references many important works of art. Madonna i a huge art collector . many people dont know this about her. She boasts large collections of important artists. Original. Museums come to her and ask her to lend the important pieces for an exhibition, some times she says yes, sometime she says no 💝😁

Moving forward, after "Human Nature", you'll have a series of videos from her ballad compilation Something to Remember and then three videos from Evita. I think the only video worth watching from Evita is "You Must Love Me" as the other ones are just excerpts from the movie. My big wish is for you to skip both "I Want You" and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" from Something to Remember as well as I personally don't think they're really worth watching and you should just jump into the Ray of Light era, but I know some fans may kill me for saying that.
