I'm curious because I'll be attempting this over the weekend Do I have to bleed the brakes if all I'm replacing is the rotors and brake pads?

    • @repairvehicle

No bleeding is needed, unless you open brake line or piston from caliper gets pushed out to far out

Rotor removal tip: buy a M8 x 1.25 size bolt and screw it into one of the threaded holes near the center of the soon-to-be-old rotor to separate it from the hub. it's **way** easier than trying to bang and hammer a rotor off that's rusted and stuck to the hub...

Just replaced the rear and front brakes on my 2007 ES350. According to my local repair shop, my front brakes were unsafe with less than 1mm of braking material. Well, turns out they were still good with approximately 5mm of material left and the rotors needed only a good cleaning. I changed everything anyway. Yes, I saved lots of money by doing this myself but more importantly I learned never to trust my 'trustworthy' repair shop again. Many thanks.

Lexus dealership said the same thing about my wife car front brakes and rotors. I'm changing them now and brakes have about 65 percent life left and the rotors don't even have a slightest lip. Smh

Well I have to retract this reply, the storm only allowed me to complete the passenger side the other day. Last Night I replaced the drivers side and seen one of the Caliper pins were frozen causing one of the brake pads to look warped so yes, if one side needs to be changed then both do so the dealership was correct. I purchased it during the pandemic and my wife hadn't put a lot of miles on it, but I guess I gotta start taking vehicles apart when I purchase them cause some shops never grease the pins and that'll lead to problems.

  • @beerstudd

can the top and bottom pins be lubricated without taking the caliper off the wheel?

    • @repairvehicle

Wheel must come off. Caliper can be lifted up or down to get the pin out to lubricate.

Best way to do front brakes is to buy rotors, pads, and calipers for a Toyota Highlander and do that. Larger diameter rotors, twin-piston calipers, and they fit up perfectly on a ES350. Braking power is substantially better.

Clamp applied to the caliper in the middle, avoid brake line bolt. Do not remove cap, moisture from air will enter brake fluid.

Good tip is every year get some Brake cleaner spray and give the front discs and pads incl rear brakes a good spray, you'll be surprised the difference it'll make.Do give the wheel nuts and metals surfaces a wipe with Copper grease while the wheels are off,it don't take that long.Look after your car and it'll look after you.
