      @thirdcoinedge 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      @@lavenderlavender3952 I can't imagine what it must have been like to witness his return back in 2012. Putting a character who had been with involved with Sidious' plans since its inception, cast off as a loose end, now reintroduced into the mix of things was a brilliant idea, and it's unfortunate that Maul could not see the grand scope of the plan until the final episodes, being focused more on revenge and attaining enough power to get back on Sidious' good side. If we had gotten another season between the events of 6 & 7, we could have seen a transitory arc as Maul comes to realize the full extent of Sidious' plans as he escapes Sidious' tortures, with his appearance at the Siege of Mandalore being the culmination of this arc, unsuccessfully trying to stop these plans and prevent Sidious' domination. Not to say that his journey through the series wasn't excellent already, but it could've added more.

      I couldn’t disagree more. This is just like Mark Hamill’s comments on the Sequel version of Luke Skywalker; that it’s a completely different character from the Luke of the Original Trilogy. Likewise, this Maul in Clone Wars has very little in common with the Maul in TPM.
      People call it a character arc that he changed so much from the trauma… but just like how Hamill criticized Luke giving up in the sequels… the way this Maul handles things is not characteristic of what the Maul in TPM would do. This one screams and rages, loses control, talks way too much and is far too animated in comparison to TPM.
      The Maul in TPM would not have gone mad after surviving the duel. He would have laid in wait calmly until his opportunity arose to come back and pursue vengeance. Sure he would have had rage, but it would be much more internal than external with screaming/mood swings etc.

A nutty man shouting a warning about an evil wizard in control of government to soldiers and people who can theoretically stop it, it's a great concept that deserves to be re-used. Imagine if that happened in real life. If some homeless guy started shouting by the side of the road while he was being arrested, and a few days later the apocalypse actually happens.

      @@Blutwind Its a testament to the growth of both characters.
      Obi Wan had gone from a Padawan helplessly watching his Master and being haunted by guilt for decades to one of the greatest Jedi of all times, able to put aside his emotions in service of the will of the force (which wanted him to protect and guide Luke towards his path)
      Maul was never going to win that fight. His anger, thirst for revenge and power clouded his judgement. It made him arrogantly think that he could kill master and apprentice with the same move. Had he been thinking clearly he'd have know Kenobi was bating him into a trap. But in his final moments we see just how far maul had grown. He let go of his anger and need for revenge and in that moment he could feel how the force had guided him and Kenobi to that moment. So that they would be avenged like he so craved

      Such a good point! Maul never lost his dathomirian roots even though he was torn from his family at such a young age. He always longed for that belonging, especially after he lost his brother and eventually his home planet to Sidious. I think that’s why he almost feels a sense of relief as he is dying in obi wans arms.. finally he can rest knowing that someone has his back, and will avenge his life of suffering

    One of the things I love about this character is as much as he tries to distance himself from the Sith he's trapped, their teachings are fundamentally burned into him, he always seeks power and is driven by his want for vengeance all the way up to his death, but the tragedy of him is further shown in the little moments where he does show traces of humanity.
    Moments like Savage's death, or his final big moment with Ezra on Dathomir, that whole bit really comes off like he is alone. Sure, he still wants to kill Kenobi, but part of him does want a meaningful connection with someone beyond that.

      @@notapuma He definitely didn’t keep up with Sidious, Sidious was laughing and not even trying the whole time. Dude was toying with him, the moment he got tired of the game he absolutely mopped the floor with Maul.
      Remember that Obi-Wan was completely off balance when fighting Maul, Maul used Obi-Wan’s pain to match him. When Obi-Wan centered himself he kept up with Maul, in Rebels we see how Obi-Wan has grown far beyond Maul. We know that being emotionally off balance is a HUGE debuff for force users, both Sith and Jedi suffer in skill and power when they aren’t focused.
      Remember also that Ahsoka was trained by Anakin Skywalker, one of the most powerful and skilled Jedi to exist. The Jedi that had Obi-Wan on the back foot for the entire Mustafar duel, the Jedi that bested the amazing duelist that was Dooku on his own. We see that Anakin’s training with Ahsoka was intensive and consuming, she was taught by one of the best.
      You don’t have to like Ahsoka or Clone Wars, but don’t pretend they didn’t give reasons for why what happened happened, or that other characters haven’t been given similar plot armor in Star Wars before.

    A broken man, born on a wasteland, raised in hatred, groomed to be an agent of darkness. Raised his entire life to desire power, to be a sith lord, only to be cast aside when a more powerful replacement was found. Bisected, alone and without direction, he lost his mind, barely surviving. Eventually he was given hope again, hope that he could be something greater, hope that he could forge his own destiny alongside his brother, hope that he can have his revenge against the one who took his legs, his place in the sith, his destiny: kenobi. Then, at the precipice of his success, he lost it all again, to the man who forced him into this path, his master, his guide: Darth Sidious. Betrayed by all and alone by circumstance, he was left only with one purpose: revenge. He sought to strike down all those who took everything from him, but at every turn he failed. At the end he sought to kill kenobi, at least he can suffer for everything, at least the man can have this much. Yet again, he fails. Struck down for one final time. The only solace is the promise of kenobi, that there will come a day when sidious will be struck down, one day. The man can die knowing that his revenge will occur, one day.
    A broken man, born on a wasteland, died with nothing, no friends, no family, no legs, no name. All he has left is a single word: Maul.

      @nirablackfire2792 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Not pure evil. Both sides of the force are guilty of spilling innocent blood one way or another.
      Maul has a lot more layers to his life that I think calling him "pure evil" is over simplifying him.
      He's evil and therefore has evil tendencies because this is how he was taught. For the better half of his early life Maul was trained as a relentless killing machine for Sidious. You can't blame an attack dog for acting how it was raised.
      Pure evil is remorseless and gives no shits about anything but itself. And as we see how Maul turns out in Rebels it's very clear losing both his mother and brother have taken quite a toll on him.
      Once Sidious considered Maul useless, his whole life crumbled and he spent the rest of it trying to find some form of purpose. And he spiraled even further into fear and confusion the more Sidious took from him. That's not pure evil, that's desperation that's been turned into aggression.

    Evil was all that Maul knew how to be- when he had Savage, all he knew was how to be a master. He knew nothing of how to be a brother. Evil was taught to him until that was all he knew. After he lost Savage, all his hatred really covered the hole in his heart- notice how he reacts when Savage is injured and killed. He cared for his brother but didn't know how to do so. And when he meets Ezra, the first person he has talked to in years, he tries to use him to fill the gaping void. Definitely one of the greatest Star Wars villains. He is up there with Vader, Sidious, Grievous, Thrawn, Dooku, Ventress, Boba Fett, Cad Bane, Durge, Abeloth, and the Yuuzhan Vong.
    Ray Park and Sam Witwer made him so legendary.
    My only question is how does Maul use the bathroom after his first defeat?

      Vader, Sidious, Grievous, Thrawn. Hell of a list.
      Can’t say exactly how he uses the bathroom, but let’s just say that’s the main reason why he’s so mad at Kenobi😆

    20:30 that is the most heartwarming, best brothers scene I've ever seen.
    Also: when I saw darth maul in the phantom menace I didn't expect him to be that cool and fearing. He just started getting impressive to me in the clone wars. His death in the phantom menace was truly disappointing and unsatisfying.

    I love Maul’s lines in Clone Wars season 7 episode 10 “Phantom Apprentice.” A lot of what he said was true about the fall of the republic and Anakin’s fall to the dark side. But the time of Jedi had not passed, not yet.

    I love Sam Witwer's work. I actually met him back at the Force Unleashed launch party in SF in 2008. His voice as Starkiller is iconic. So when I found out he was casted to voice Darth Maul, I was excited. And hearing the aggressive and low tone he puts on for Maul sells it for me. But I always find it awesome how when Sam Witwer says certain lines in certain tones like at 1:01:06 you can hear some Starkiller coming out.

    Went from a character with a cool design and one of, if not THE best choreographed fights in the series (I like to imagine that he planned out a whole route for his fight based on how he fought at different stages, particularly with how quickly he switches from defence to offence the moment he had a guaranteed 1v1 with Qui-Gon without a chance of interruption from Obi-Wan) to one of the best written characters in the series

    Darth Maul has been my favorite Sith for as long as I can remember. I watched the original trilogy when I was a borderline toddler, and as soon as I saw that double bladed lightsaber from the new bad guy with the red skin and the cool horns, I instantly was hooked. I remember when I watched the episode where Maul was revealed to still be alive live when I was 9 years old. I distinctly remember gasping and freaking out and yelling “HE’S ALIVE?!?!?!” while my dad tried to get me and my brother to calm down. (Though in hindsight, he was also excited.) My Star Wars-imbued childhood had been Darth Maul. He was my hero for what a villain was. And he was ALIVE.
    I ended up watching all of what happened to Maul. His renewal by the Nightsisters. His conquest of Mandalore. His eventual fall. But deep down, part of me knew he’d be back.
    And now that he has, I’ve seen his betrayal by the Emperor, his desperate attempt to warn the Jedi of the oncoming slaughter. His final confrontation with the man who set him on his path of vengeance. His final question in his last moments asking if the boy he sought was the one who would bring balance to the force.
    I see a tale of tragedy, a conqueror of ambition, led by the greatest of evils. A man who succumbed to his rage, but still tried to help his sworn enemies. A broken man both physically and mentally, who in the end was respected by the one he swore revenge upon.
