Same here, bought the Ora as my commute car. Paid $24K for a 10 month old demo. Unbelievably good value and it's actually a really enjoyable drive and the acceleration is just mind blowing for a vehicle at this price point.
Styling is subjective, the seagull with sharp angles won't appeal to everyone and vice versa. But this Geely does look more stylish both inside and outside.
Currently developing for the RHD. They invited their sibling brand Proton dealers for private viewing of the model in China. Its very possibly coming next year in RHD version to Malaysia.
1) $9,900 - $14,000 is the price in China. In Europe, Australia, Thailand or anywhere else the price will be significantly higher. 2) 310-410 km range: under the Chinese standard (CLTC). WLTP range will be 15-20% lower.
I would say they must be cheaping out in motor: but 140kmh is ALL you need other than 1. Deutsch bahn 2. US interstates 3. track And Russian highway if you can bride all the way thru
I do think it is a better car, newer design at this segment with rear aircond, front booth, rear underseat storage, and 50/50 weight distribution, rear wheel drive, the motor and inverter is a combined unit that is small and light weight, though not high power but good enough for city drive and with weight of only 1300kg.. I think it is one of lighter weight EV i see so far. This will come to Malaysia as Proton eMAS 5 right hand drive version
Everyone says tiny cars do not sell well in Australia. Maybe but I really wish someone, BYD, Geely, anybody, would release a tiny, inexpensive EV. I really think there would be enough EV people who would love one as a second car just for local tripping around. The small battery version would do me fine.
Entry price for base model is 80k Yuan = $11,200 USD not $9,000 according to Geely. There is no official price for the top spec yet anyone saying $14k USD is making it up. Specs are 30.1 kwh (28.5kwh usable) for the base and 40.1kwh battery (38.5kwh usable) for the top spec. CLTC ranges is 310 CLTC / ~255 km WLTP for the base and 410 / WLTP ~340km ofr the top spec. Motor outputs 58kw for the base, 85kw for the top of the range. Max speed 125km/h base, 135km/h top spec. Mainly a city car will drian the battery extremely fast at 110km/h on a freeway operating at or near their maximum speed.
Not keen on the styling but that doesn't matter much. 410 km of range so on a drive from Perth to Geraldton or Albany I'd need to stop for a quick top up. My old Nissan Pulsar can almost get there and back on a tankful. Should be good around town though which is where most of us drive most of the time.
410 km is CLTC (Claimed) from a (40.1 gross) 38.5kwh (usable) battery = 10.6km/kwh - totally unrealistic this will be more like 340km WLTP and use a minumum 140wh/km at 110km/h (being very generous as the given the top speed is 135km/h it's up against it's limit). This is around 270km for 100% to 0% at that speed, probably want to have 15% left as a minimum when you recharge = around 230km before you need a top-up. There are no practical fast charge options on Hwy 1 - you'd have to go the coast road and stop at Jurien Bay on the way for around 45 min to recharge
Everyone has their own taste. Honestly, I found it quite ugly on the outside. I like the retro style of the Ora GWM more. The inside is much better. The features seem very similar to the Seagull, which, by the way, I have one here in Brazil. I repeatedly get between 389 km/charge and 410 km/charge (city). I would like a second small electric car and this one hasn't convinced me yet.
Sam, what is the availability of this vehicle outside of China. The specs you quote are very basic and WLTP range is only going to be 300km max for the long range, so better than the BYD Dolphin, well not sure about that.
Bigger is not better in this case. The Seagul iscsmall, which makes it more appealing for city traffic and parking. That's its usp. Going on about this one being bigger is not selling it to me.
Better in the rear suspension, rear wheel drive and frunk. But heavier. Against the stated, BYD powertrains are more efficient than geely's and, whatever claimed by catl and geely on their battery density, I bet that for the same battery capacity the seagull will beat this geome in range.
Another nightmare for US an EU automakers. Reminds one of the Japanese invasion with their smaller cars and fuel savigs. China is providing a full range of cars and quality seems to permeate the whole line. So who's next to the race to the bottom?
@@calc1657 Indeed, to US via Mexico. You've heard of NAFTA2? (USMCA) The likes of BYD and CATL are planning to build factories there so Mexicans can have jobs. Even Ford says it is building its EV factory in Mexico.
@@MASMIWA NAFTA2 comes up for review in 2026. The subject of Chinese EVs being made in Mexico will obviously be discussed. In other words, those EVs won't be allowed tarriff-free entry to the US.
Outside of China, Chinese EV makers are going to town. I'd be curious to know what the most popular non-Chinese EV's are in China. Foreign owned plants within China dont' have to deal with tariffs, have access to Chinese labour and all the latest EV tech. How do they stack up to against similarly priced Chinese competitors there?
Not even close - Tesla is the largest non-Chinese EV manufacturer in China by a a long shot, in fact it's the largest pure EV manufacturer including the Chinese, companies, slightly ahead of BYD, although both BYD & SAIC make more 'new energy' cars when you include PHEVs and hybrids.

Canadian Prime minister Man Child won't allow us the freedom to buy these inexpensive quality cars. Instead we are forced to buy $50-$60k overpriced Amerikkkan branded clunkers, as there are no real Canadian car brands at all.
I don't think either the BYD Seagull or this Geely car would sell very well in the USA because USA customers don't buy small economy cars (or even small cars). They want big SUV-style vehicles. AFAIK all the USA manufacturers stopped selling small cars, and most of the foreign auto companies have very few small economy cars in their line-ups anymore. If either company started selling them there would probably be an "initial interest" spike in sales, but it would quickly level off and fall off even if they were reliable, mechanically sound, and quick to charge up.
that is due to a purposeful market push, not really that natural. The makers literally stopped making those cars, and then never started back when demand returned because they prefer the higher margins with bigger cars.
