  • Iwagumi Aquascape designed at aquaflora in Holland. Learn how I used principles from Iwagumi, traditional Japanese rock work (zen), in combination with modern diorama / georama style (wild) and biotope-style learning-from-nature mentality to put together this hybrid planted aquarium design that straddles the different schools and recreates "Jou-ryuu", the nature of the high mountain upstream river image.
Check out the original stream of the entire build on Aquaflora's FB channel: / 3155742841102700

Liked watching this piece when it was coming together. The tension definitely there for me, "hanging rock" just waiting for a chance to crush. I particularly liked the heavier planting in the lee of the big stone, where it would be protected from the rush of water. Thanks for the detailed discussion

I love how you and other “masters” scape with rock. You pay attention to light and shadow. Its not just about where the rock is but how it affects its surroundings. Keep on inspiring us Steve!

Yes, even a small rock has a big impact on a layout so each placement has great meaning. 🌹

I may have missed this information but, what kind of rock is this? Thanks in advance Steve.

And good call on just playing with as much Frodo stone as you can while you have it available because I have not found it anywhere in Asia

Nice work! I made a channel to show you can make low-maintenance, small planted aquariums out of glass bottles and I keep a few shrimp and snails in a glass drinks dispenser! My two latest videos on my channel shows the aquariums with commentary with one showing three shrimp fighting over an algae wafer!

hi steve, great aquascape! would like to ask if this layout was to be translate into a tropical rain forest/ amazonian river , with moss place in between the gaps, with
Epiphyte plants, pinnatifida for the wild jungle river bank look, do you think it will work? Hardscapes are combination of seiryu stones + red moor woods.
    Thanks again steve!

Hi Steve.. Please suggest on how to treat new driftwood or old driftwood, i had black beard algae growing on my driftwood so i removed it from my aquarium.. I am planning to add it back.. Please let me know if any curing process i should take care before using driftwood.

Hi Eric, do you mean the video quality, or the layout? If it's the video quality apologies-- but competitive aquascaping is my main hobby (and kids, job...). The main reason there's so few vids Jan-March is because all my spare time goes towards IAPLC. This is also the main reason you won't see many competitive aquascapers as TH-camrs-- and this channel is an experiment in whether that issue can be overcome by relying on insight/name recognition, without serious investment in production time/editing. Even so, a lot of time and effort goes into my social media channels that could be spent purely on contest prep-- so I'm doing more on this front than most top competitive aquascapers. I don't expect all of TH-cam to love this channel, but hope it's an asset for those who greatly desire this kind of information.
