Andrew Huberman Breaks his Silence

  • For more than a month Andrew Huberman has remained silent on the article by Kerry Howley in New York Magazine about his multiple affairs and poor science. Over that time his podcast has sunk in the rankings and several articles have come out without comment. Instead Huberman hired a PR firm called Scale Strategies to manage his public appearance. However, this week he appeared on the ‪@JockoPodcastOfficial‬ and spent thirteen minutes going into details. This is my reaction video to that commentary.

Huberman´s argument „if you want to know somebody´s heart look how they treat their animals“ (20:14) is utter nonsense and a false comparative draw. Some psychopathic individuals are known to be animal lovers and kind to them, while being monsters to other people (e.g. Hitler was a great dog lover and also campaigned strongly for animal welfare). The reason for this is that animals bring unconditional love and obedience and therefore a natural dominance structure is possible, unlike with humans. To love animals and treat them right says nothing about how a person will treat other humans.

I really cannot understand how any person can defend someones emotionally abusive behaviour, if it indeed happened the way it was described (credibility is the only point of debate I can accept in this case).
This could easily be looked at as "sexual coersion" - which can include getting someone to sleep with you by telling them lies. This is no small "did a bad thing" matter. It's not hard to imagine how it could lead to emotional damage in form of trust issues, which could seriously impact further relationships. It's just a form of emotional and sexual abuse.
There is definitely no need for a successful, self-aware, intelligent and good looking guy to do that to get laid, so other than utter lack of concern for others wellbeing I can't think of much to drive someone in that position to such behaviours.
It's certainly worth at least criticizing and calling it out because unscrupulous people unfortunately only respond to consequences. And it's very much worth taking behaviour into consideration before supporting someone (even if the content is free - having millions of followers always leads to financial and personal advantages), especially if it's via the 10 dollar a month members club.
Nothing ever wrong with questioning if the money will be used for flights to a couple more women.
I'm not sitting in any glass house as I have never done anything in that dimension of "badness", which I assume is true for the other people here too. It's of course debatable but even if I other had done similarly bad things - it's also about the attitude afterwards.
The minimum one should be at least owning up to that behaviour, being apologetic and changing ones behaviour in the future. Without that minimum there is nothing to "get over". And criticism is just the fair reaction of a society that doesn't want everyone going havoc and taking advantage of each other.
PS: There seems to be a region in the default mode network responsible for "moral reasoning". Something like a moral IQ I guess. It just comes to mind if I read things like that.

Whatever his faults (errors/biases/overreaches/philandering) - it should not be a controversial assessment that Andrew Huberman is CLEARLY very, very far from sociopathic. Despite all his shortcomings (known/suspected/unknown/unsuspected), he is demonstrably and sincerely energized by whatever small but dignified contribution he can make for his fellow humans during his short time on earth. This should be apparent... Just as surely as his shortcomings and biases and lifetime errors should not only give all of us valuable experience in maintaining our own individual, unique independence of mind and opinion; but should also remind and reassure each of us, privately, that _our own personal, crooked, error-prone, outwardly-unsuccessful path is par for our own legitimate course - as Andrew's path likewise is, for his outwardly successful course._ He's no fucking greater and no fucking worse, as a human who's being, than we are - TRULY. He's doing pretty good, for a human; has some important knowledge to share; is yet another inspired soul who's alive right now, with us - and us with him.

I was told by a friend that his spiritual teacher said if you increase your energy you also increase your negative characteristics. So specific meditations can be harmful, because some people cannnot control their increased addictions or negative characteristics. That reminds me of Huberman and his sex addiction, because he makes these endurance meditation without putting an additional focus on the water element or empathy and compassion meditations. At least, I did not find anything in the youtube search bar of this channel about these topics. He cannot control his bad habits, because his teachings are incomplete, in my opinion.

Wow, that’s a really interesting take to me - I don’t know much about meditation, and never knew about the balancing practice that might be needed - makes me wonder about how we in the west use yoga as exercise, almost exclusively - but also, this reminds me of Christian quotes/saying that had to do with idleness and the devils playground - or how when people becomes slightly manic (for whatever reason it may happen), the energy can be useful, but ultimately it’s overflows and becomes destructive - so many other examples of this as a lesson, I’m sure, within different religions, cultures, histories, wisdoms…
Though I personally suspect that the hub’s overwhelming energy may have come from chemical performance enhancers and not just the mind - I relate this to your comment in my experiences to my belief that shortcuts hurt eventually … or there is always a price to pay upfront or in the end

It’s hilarious how so many Huberfans are enraged by the NY Mag article and calling it a “hit piece,” when really it’s inevitable that someone with such a huge audience and so much influence will face criticism, no matter what they are saying or trying to sell. And despite this “hit piece” going into great detail about Huberman’s sexual dalliances, it more importantly shines a light on how much bs neurotic pseudo-science and supplements this salesman is selling to all of us. I really gave his podcast a fair try, but quickly realized that he must not do his homework on a lot of the claims that some of his guests (like David Sinclair) are making, which are frankly, unsubstantiated weak science nonsense. He also has a great knack at taking scientific concepts that are relatively simple, and complicating them with long-winded over explanations and tangential side quips that don’t help to illustrate whatever point he was trying to make at all. Then I saw what Huberman looks like/his carefully crafted image of “I’m a Stanford-adjacent member of the scientific elite who is such a punk-nerd, that my wardrobe should remind people of Steve Jobs, but really I’m just another Elizabeth Holmes.” And it worked/is still working. I want to say that I can’t believe how many people find him irresistible despite how obviously full of crap he is, but apparently we all love a big steaming pile o’crap. Just try to listen to him recite his origin story about how he was some neglected, troubled youth who overcame all the odds stacked against him to be where he is today because of his discipline and grit. If you weren’t born yesterday, your bullshit meter will be sounding the alarm that dude bro is a poser, His daddy was a Stanford professor, which means that Huberman is Stanford legacy, which means that he was essentially guaranteed a position at this prestigious name-brand institution from birth. Grit and discipline my ass!!! I have a hunch that Stanford must be getting something in return for him name dropping the university on his show. Might be a minor detail but there is folklore about SEALS getting in tons of fights but facing little consequences as they were needed on missions. There have been allegations made by Eric Demming against Jocko. I have no idea of the veracity of the allegations but the "above the law" attitude of SEALS has ben mentioned by many, even Jocko in a sideways kind of way where he mentioned that many SEALS had an almost criminal way of doing things. I understand why you would rather the focus be on how casually he slips pseudo science and unsubstantiated claims into his podcast while simultaneously presenting himself as the standard bearer for the scientific method; but I do actually think his cheating matters as well. Not because it's juicy (it's not), no it matters because his podcast is largely focused on how to live a healthy life and he often speaks about how mental health is necessary for overall wellbeing. He notes correctly that mental health is far more than just the absence of mental illness, and has detailed podcasts on how to promote mental health. He discusses how important personal relationships are to our mental health. So is cheating and lying and manipulating and bullying others conducive to one's mental health? Does cheating and lying create those strong interpersonal relationships that build mental health?
He has massive influence. I hope young men don't walk away thinking that the key to happiness is being able to lie to and bully the women in their life. That's not "winning"! Let's take a page out of Ghandi's book and consider that happiness comes when what you say, think, and do are all in harmony.

Thank you, Scott! You are honestly and courageously bringing up so many important themes to advance our collective integrity in the way information is conveyed publicly through this age of information overload. Yes, fame absolutely comes with responsibility! And if Huberman “Intentionally” mis directed all of us with bad science - then shame on him !! He should tell us all “honestly” where he did this and i can then work on repairing my respect for him. We live in an age where honest, intelligent, noble, wise, information is more important than ever as the power that be, who have a little knowledge our our evolved neurophsyiological mechanisms can really do more harm than good when selling a yarn instead of honestly conveying the information with no strings attached Also, why why - when someone makes enough money and the Maslow hierarchy of needs is totally taken care of do people continue to sell out if not syccombing to their own addictions power and control … our collective character needs to stand on trail alongside the amplification of information ! I can rambe on and on about the pandora’s box of wisdom your questions unravel when you do this kind of journalism. I heard the other say that the etymology of the word rational comes from the meaning of “ratio” proper proportion of things and the more light that is shined on ourselves and everything for that matter the more the shadow is revealed !! I believe good character requires a deep understanding of this - when work hard to find a center in our imperfect selves we can come from less polarization “sane to crazy spectrum” and if more of the people that become famous see this then you won’t have to do pieces like this anymore 😂

When you make it into a juice you remove the fibre and your body doesn't digest it slow which in turn causes a spike in sugar in your blood and then a crash. A smoothie or whole fruit on the other hand doesn't because of the fibre. Your body takes longer to digest that and in turn the sugar gets released gradually and doesn't cause a spike.
