      He has his opinions for sure, but he always presents the facts, all of the ones he can find, as clearly and as well as he can, and then he gives his opinion and makes sure it's clear that it's his opinion. I may not always agree with him, but I know I can always trust him to give the facts and the true story.

      Especially when even Phillip fumbled a bit of information in this episode. The story about the Charlottesville incident was a bit mis-represented in the group the dude was part of. He wasn't actually a part of Vanguard, and that was said by the Vanguard themselves. Not that I agree with their ideals, but it's just a point of how multiple sources show the full story and how minor details are often jumbled up and lost in a single source.

    To those asking what's the difference between saying "white lives matter" and "black live matter"
    BLM was a movement that started to call attention to police shooting in America. It's not saying black lives matter more (it's not even saying the matter the same technically), it's just saying they matter and society was ignoring them and disenfranchising them. When it was coined, it has implied "too" at the end if that makes it easier to understand.
    As for the white lives matter. That only started as a way to take away from the BLM movement. Yes white lives matter, but that was never up for debate. It's effectively the same as me giving candy to one kid and not the other, the second kid is like "hey, can I want candy too" and I go on about "everyone needs candy, you don't need candy more than the first kid..." but never give them something as well. That being said, the statement "white lives matter" is not racist.
    Now for Charlottesville. They were saying "white lives matter" and promoting nazi iconography. Nazis are known for white supremacy, it's kind of their thing. They would say things like "taking our rights back" (from where? You never lost them. Someone getting rights doesn't strip you of yours. Rights are not in limited quantity). This all implies they weren't saying white lives matter too (as with BLM) but instead saying white lives matter MORE, their rights are more important than everyone's. This is their land and it's being "invaded". All those connotations is what makes theirs racist.

    Perhaps one of the reasons a very large segment of rational people in this country don't get involved in events like this is because it's very unlikely that you will reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. Emotion fuels emotion and has a tendency to cloud logic. A protest is beyond the point of logical discussion. At the point of a protest, the teams have been chosen and the lines drawn. At the point of a protest, it's already a failure.

    What I am genuinely scared of is that people get so involved in choosing sides and so consumed with the fear of being condemned as "unloyal", the things get so radical so fast that it spins out of control.
    During events like this, the outrage just deafens people. The world becomes black and white (not in terms of skin color, but in terms of contrast). People lose sight of gray areas completely, and it becomes impossible to reason with anyone.
    What we should train ourselves to do is keep a level head, look at the situation reasonably and not let ourselves get dragged down into an emotional madness, whatever side you're on.
    No matter how much things outrage you... if you lose your temper it will only get worse, nothing right can come out of that.

      I completely agree. Political views should not incite violence. I personally think that all who were a part of the white nationalist protest with the intent of establishing white dominance over other ethnic groups are detestable, but the people from ANTIFA who attacked them were just as much in the wrong.
      It's never okay to use violence; it is morally wrong. It is especially bad because it causes polarization between one another. Some people on the left choose to only see that white supremacists killed an innocent woman in a riot. Some people on the right choose to only see that ANTIFA came and attacked people who until their arrival were peacefully protesting.
      Both sides are at fault, these violent actions will only cause people sitting on the fence to pick a side and join the fight, leading to more violence. Regardless of your political views, protests should be peaceful, and those who act in violence in behalf of their race, creed, or ethnicity should be seen as evil, by all sides.

    This is disgusting to watch. But it's also sick to look at comments and see that people are diving us into groups, saying that it's the left's fault, or the right's fault. We have to come together, we can't be hateful towards people who believe the same beliefs as us. Political parties have become such a big part of us, that it paints the entire picture of someone from the moment you meet them. Not one liberal thinks the same as the other liberal, same with conservatives. We are all individuals! We can't be put into groups, that's not going to solve anything.
    Stop saying it's the other parties fault, the white peoples fault, the black peoples fault, Trump's fault.
    It's literally the Neo-Nazi, KKK members, and the white supremacists fault. Blame them. They're the ones causing the uproar and the mess.

    • @wassupdawg1977
      @wassupdawg1977 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I mean, i hate neo Nazis as much as the next guy, but isn't this anti-fa's fault primarily? I know this is stated a lot just in this comment section but this was a legitimate protest with official papers etc designating it as such, as far as i know anyway. Their views may be vile but they have every right to say them and the original protest was set up in a legitimate way so they had every right to be there.
      No violence would have occurred if Anti-fa didn't come to disrupt the protest surely? I mean, its pretty symbolic that the Nazi's, alt right and free speech people are usually the ones armed with shields to defend themselves while anti-fa have projectiles to instigate. And its happened time and time again, so you can't even argue that by bringing their shields and weapons the original protesters were looking for the fight, as recently a fight with anti-fa has been inevitable at right wing events of all kinds.
      I'm sorry, i know you started out your post saying not to lay blame based on group affiliation and differing opinion, but you then blame the wrong group probably because they have the more obviously vile opinion.

    • @wassupdawg1977
      @wassupdawg1977 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah, and antifa came up to instigate a fight.
      For the last year, any right-wing event has been attacked by Anti-fa. At the start anti-fa were just beating on random people attending a lecture. As time progressed, more and more people on the right started bringing armor and helmets and shields and weapons to defend themselves. Most of those events had minor nazi presence as surprise surprise those with views people will suppress first will always congregate to the events proclaiming free speech, but that doesnt mean the other nazis are blind to what happens there. So when an event with a larger than usual neo-nazi presence (A group that are usually incredibly militant) gets attacked by anti-fa they will have more militant weapons.
      They bring this stuff to defend themselves because at this point it is provable that a well advertised right wing event will inevitably lead to a fight with anti fa who will be throwing cement filled bottles, bottles of piss, bats with nails, mini explosives and other thuggish weapons. To not bring things to defend yourself with would be to decide to be a sitting duck.
      The nazis views are retarded and evil, and yet they are the group who had legitimacy to their protest. Magically when anti-fa attacks an actual event where militant extremists are present and not some milo event, the reaction will be militant and extreme. If they didn't have anti-fa instigate the attack, they would have had nothing to attack back against. They would have had some vile people say some vile lectures, drank a few beers and gone home.

      It's called bipartisanism -- and it is most certainly NOT a good thing when there are only two choices: instead of looking for the BEST option for both sides people look for the WORST option for THE OTHER side, just to make themselves and their """team"""" look better...

      Hate would originally come from fear of things which cause harm or we do not understand (so a lack of knowledge) and the unknown, nowadays hate come more from disagreements and different opinions it seems and is taught by parents or friends for you model your behaviour after them subconsciously or not

No one else needed. If anything we're becoming the same as animals or even worse. There's no humanity, no compassion, NOTHING.
    When you see people celebrating the death of someone, when you see people willing to use rampant violence and try to justify themselves? Our empathy and humanity is draining away.

    You have put across this story in a very clear way without hiding from open facts from all parties. You talked about everyone needing the realisation of unity and respect. However, in the comments people are still blaming each other. Is this humanity or will this ever change? It saddens me but my faith upon universal (or the majority of) human acceptance actually happening ever is dwindling. History is repeating itself over and over and we are more in the shit every time.

      People generally don't think about anyone but themselves. Most of us (myself included) will say they care about famine, poverty or whatever but in actual real life (not what we think should happen) most of us don't have or don't take the time to realy care about anything more then our immediate circles (family and friends). So that means everyone agrees with themselves in those circles and nothing realy changes. We only think about having enough money to get this or that. Which means we need to work more. When you work more you have less time and all that loop keeps happening. Very few people are capable of doing the right thing on a regular basis. Talking is the key but when you can't talk to people of different walks of life ... you get stuck in your ways unless you actively try not to.

    I am extremely saddened and angry at all of these bigoted individuals for their desecration of Robert E Lee and their misguided support of him. First off, let's be clear that Robert E Lee, while the general for the Confederate army, was in fact in agreement with Northern values and beliefs which is why he wished for the Union to stay intact and was offered a position by Abe Lincoln himself to take charge of the Union army. Lee obviously turned this down as he didn't wish to fight against his home state and was drawn in to serve as the Souths general. Robert E Lee was a wonderfully brilliant military tactician who sought to ease tensions before the Civil War and during Reconstruction. It's a shame he won't be remembered as such but instead as a martyr to be used by white supremacists and disgusting Neo Nazis to further their own agenda.

      Sadaharu a lot of people don't know this about history. When I first heard that this protest/riot started because of the Robert E Lee statue my first thought was "but he agreed with the northerners?????" I understand that people think he's guilty by association or is a reminder of a dark era in american history but people really need to educate themselves before they start spewing discomtempt. White nationalists, neo-nazis, and white supremacists also shouldn't claim him as part of their cause because I don't think if he were alive today would stand for that kind of hatred.

The constant propagation of hate, vandalism and violence is not, can not and never will solve the problems we have, it only makes matters worse and even creating problems were there weren't ones before.

    I don't care if you believe in "BLM" and "WLM", what angers me is when those groups use that as a platform for hate speech and violence. Then they go to the excuse of "freedom of speech". I viciously disagree with some people's viewpoint, but if we don't learn as a society to listen and communicate then a solution is far in the future.

    I agree with everything you said in today's show apart from the end when you said that most of these people are gonna convert or something. Because the most annoying thing for me personally is those statements saying "it's all white people" that is so annoying because the majority of white people are rational people and should not be compared with neo-nazis, white supremacists or the KKK, the reason I believe we have this big uprising in alt-right movements is because of this idiotic mentality of "all white people are [insert type of discrimination].

    The statement by Lorde really made me mad. I agree 100% this is unacceptable, but to blame all white people for what happened is just insulting. I am a white male and I am the furthest thing from who those people are. They are hardcore conservatives who agree with, most likely, anarchist beliefs. I am a strong liberal who has many very far left beliefs and am strongly against any sort of violence whatsoever and believe we need to stop learning about wars in schools, but why they happen and how to prevent them. To put me or anyone no matter skin color or background in the same group as those awful people is just insulting.

I consider myself in the middle not left or right, and It almost feels like there is less and less wiggle room with more and more people going to the far right or far left. we need open discourse but I don't see that happening. I think a lot of people have already made their minds up. The left can justify violence because the right is violent and the right can justify violence because the left is violent. and all of us who say no one is justified get set aside because you cant beat the group mentality that has been instilled on each side.

    The thing is that these people do have legitimate grievances but the issue is they too are being ostracized by people for their sex or colour of their skin.
    What we can do to help alleviate the tension these people have is to discuss, debate, and chat with them.
    I'm a coloured person and what do I do when I meet a racist person? I show them kindness and try to get them to understand that I am no different than they are.
    Try to find out why they hold these views and try to prove them wrong. If you choose to be mean and violent towards them all you will do is make them believe any preconceived notions they have to be correct. Fighting violence with violence and hate with hate will always lead to the same fate.
    There is a saying that we should try to bring back, "Kill your enemies with kindness."

    • @AzureWanderer55
      @AzureWanderer55 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Black Ribbon That's the thing. Not enough people nowadays don't even want to talk about why this stuff happens. The only way to find a solution is to find out why they think this way then to convince them otherwise by having civil and open discussions.

    • @Emogeta
      @Emogeta 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems to be that way as many would much rather just bring up the past in order to end the discussion and claim themselves correct.
      Many say that there is no room to discuss or chat with Nazi's simply for those killed during WWII. Though, I am sure these people are perfectly fine chatting or being near a Japanese person despite the fact the Japanese attempted a genocide of their own that took more lives than the Nazi's did.

    Phil talking about Antifa is completely relevant in this case, as there is quite a bit of evidence that they were the ones who began the violence, and are known for violent protests. He should condemn both although the obvious onus is on the White supremacists who had one of there own murder others. However you don't want to empower a terrorist organization like Antifa to do even more damage then they have already done, by feeling justified in there violence toward anyone on the right.

    So your Constitution, Declaration of Independence and laws say Americans are equal, you have a right to religion, you are free to pursue happiness. Now the KKK does NOT believe in or preach equality, the Neo-Nazis do not believe in or preach freedom of religion and both advocate and have exercised violence against various groups, robbing them of their safety and happiness. Yet they hide behind the 1st Amendment with the specific goal of TAKING OTHER RIGHTS (given in the same documents) AWAY from their targets. Their freedom, their safety, their religion and their equality. I do not have to physically attack someone to make them feel fear, unequal or oppressed. This is why protecting hate speech is fucked. They (Supremacists, Neo-Nazis & Alt-Right) are free, the victims are not.

    What I don't understand is how someone can admit they are a nazi, and not be arrested. Why is it legal to have that belief?

    The colour of complexion doesn't say a thing about who you are, why should we use it to judge and determine someone's value. Why should it be that reason that leads to hate. If you paint a portrait all you do for people of a darker complexion is use different amounts of the same colours you use for someone of a lighter complexion. We all have blood running through our veins, we all drink water and breathe air. What's the difference? There originally not from America? Neither is any white person. If your going to judge, judge by actions. Because judging by a race in a country founded on and made by immigration doesn't make sense.

      just so you know...skin color is a very minor part of race its just the most obvious one.

      DIVAD291 I was saying at the core what we argued for years that make us different doesn't actually make us very different. Obviously I know the argument steams deeper than just the colour of someone's skin but when you get to that level all you are arguing is beliefs, which is an abstract concept and doesn't make sense to hate someone for, unless their beliefs are immoral. And immoral beliefs are more commonly a single persons beliefs or a small groups beliefs, which are rarely the beliefs of an entire race. I'm saying that people should be judged for the actions they make not the colour of their skin or the race they belong to.

      Sarah Brooklyn Agreed. Judge people by the content of their character. This is all the sad result of identity politics...

    It's becoming incredibly clear that there is a drive towards radical views in our time on both sides of the spectrum. While you made the stance that you believe more individuals were coming towards the center I believe that blanket arguments are pushing moderates to the fringes. Arguments like "all white people are racist", "your opinion is lesser than mine because blank", or "all right wing/ conservatives are nazis" only pushes us further from each other. We need to establish that all parties only want the best for America, different parties have different images on how to do so. Just because you don't agree with someone's viewpoint does not give you the right to be violent or label them loosely. I condemn all violence, others seem to pick and choose what violence they want to disavow, after this weeks attack people cheered on Twitter for a white nationalist being punched. While I don't agree with his stance you can not be violent towards him for his views. Again, he is a piece of shit, but violence is not the answer. As a country we need to start treating each other as individuals not as ideological members. As a right leaning individual I do agree that Trump needs to be criticized for his policies and faults, but what news stories have become are drivel. He has condemned bigotry and racism of all kinds, and that is a positive. What really needs to occur is he needs to address concern about domestic terrorism in the forms of white supremacy and white nationalism. But, to say that he is a supremacist because he doesn't mention them by name is utter hilarity. This situation will only be managed through genuine talks about difficult topics.

    we're singing a song in my school choir that i feel is relevant in these rough and trying times. it says "i believe in the sun, even when it is not shining. i believe in love, even when i feel it not. i believe in God, even when He is silent." the "sun" is interpreted as a symbol for hope. though things look dim, we must keep our heads high and our faith strong.
