When I was in old Fort Worth in 18 and 83 An old Mexican cowboy Came stepping up to me He said how are you young fellow how would you like to go And spend a season working in the hills of Mexico Well I had no other employment back in Arkansas Tis according to your wages according to your pay Well I’ll pay to you good wages Often to your home If you’ll spend a season working in the hills of Mexico Well they sent all my wages on a steamboat they did go How the bells they did ring the whistles they did blow How the bells they did ring the whistles they did blow In that god forsaken port boat from the hills of Mexico Well I worked as a cowboy Riding to an fro In the hot summer sun the rain and the snow In the hot summer sun the rain and the snow Before I worked away my youth down in the hills of Mexico Well I meet a señorita there with eyes as black as coal And she swore that she loved me With all her heart and soul And she swore that she loved me With all her heart and soul ‘Till her parents took her from me in the hills of Mexico So I drew my last wages and Northwood I did go I rode across the Rio Grande and made for Arkansas When I reached my destination there was no one I did know It was all as bleak and barren as the hills of Mexico
It took me 3 listens, and finally headphones to block out every other sound, to appreciate how good this performance is. Absolutely hypnotic rhythm by the bass and banjo, and great raspy interludes by the fiddle.
Truly and deeply amazing version of this olden song, love it when Roscoe Holcomb sings it and that's what lead me here. Thanks for the goosebumps on my soul.
lol probably someone who really likes Willie Watson who released a version of this song the same year... on an album that was entirely old time covers...
When I's in old Fort Worth in eighteen of eighty three, Some old Mexican cowboy come stampin' up to me, Sayin' "How are you young fella? How would you like to go And spend another season in them hills of Mexico?"
Very good rendition. I have written very extensively about The Hills of Mexico in the Lore of New Mexico. Basically, the ballad describes cattle drives typical of those on the Goodnight Loving Trail. There are lyrics in my book, done with Anthropologist Marta Weigle. And some more history of the cattle drives, local New Mexico versions, and more. I hope members of this great band will look into this
i love the clifton hicks version as well as this one. but what i REALLY want is a historically accurate video of the songs content. just played so well, and with much care taken to represent and portray the people being sung about.

The more I listen to this song, the more I fall in love with it.
Thanks!
It’s fire
When I was in old Fort Worth in 18 and 83
An old Mexican cowboy
Came stepping up to me
He said how are you young fellow how would you like to go
And spend a season working in the hills of Mexico
Well I had no other employment back in Arkansas
Tis according to your wages according to your pay
Well I’ll pay to you good wages
Often to your home
If you’ll spend a season working in the hills of Mexico
Well they sent all my wages on a steamboat they did go
How the bells they did ring the whistles they did blow
How the bells they did ring the whistles they did blow
In that god forsaken port boat from the hills of Mexico
Well I worked as a cowboy
Riding to an fro
In the hot summer sun the rain and the snow
In the hot summer sun the rain and the snow
Before I worked away my youth down in the hills of Mexico
Well I meet a señorita there with eyes as black as coal
And she swore that she loved me
With all her heart and soul
And she swore that she loved me
With all her heart and soul
‘Till her parents took her from me in the hills of Mexico
So I drew my last wages and Northwood I did go
I rode across the Rio Grande and made for Arkansas
When I reached my destination there was no one I did know
It was all as bleak and barren as the hills of Mexico

Thanks for the lyrics to this version of the song.
thank you
Hey now. Thx for transcribing the lyrics. Cool beans!
The banjo in this song sounds so damn good. Chris Coole is next level.
That's' what hooked me to it. Love the clawhammer.
This is just simply the best version of this great song , in my opinion
Willie Watson would disagree
@@trevormorred6913 Roscoe Holcomb as an opinion on this as well
@@trevormorred6913 I love willie Watsons version, but I prefer the lyrical content to this, and the bass and fiddle make this phenomenal
@@darthmusturd9526 after listening to this again I think willie singing to these instruments would be perfect,
you heard Roscoe?
It took me 3 listens, and finally headphones to block out every other sound, to appreciate how good this performance is. Absolutely hypnotic rhythm by the bass and banjo, and great raspy interludes by the fiddle.
Go see them live if you get the chance. They're 👌🏻

That was an accident, these boys are awesome, I could listen to these guys all day long
very fine version of this song
Song reminds me of Cormac McCarthy's "All The Pretty Horses", but that's far from the only reason I love it.
Reminds me of Missouri Borderlands by Joe Newberry. Listen to the version by Mandolin Orange.
This is awesome. Gotta get up to Toronto.
Love this
