    Life too short for long TH-cam videos? See the ’Interesting bits and go-to sections’ timings below.
    In this episode we take a first step into a question that gets asked all the time. Well, a couple questions actually: what’s all the fuss about mini pedals, and are they as good as the big versions?
    So in this, erm, not exactly rigorously scientific examination, we schwang through some sounds courtesy of five pairs of pedals in regular and small formats to hear what we think.
    We will revisit this using some other kinds of pedals in the future, and maybe even do a mini pedals challenge. In the meantime, enjoy this episode!

    Mick plugs into the Riot "Wow what a great sounding High Gain pedal, can you make it sound Low Gain." Mick is like the antithesis of the "Does it Djent?" people and instead asks "Does it Tube Screamer?" 😂

    My favourite part of this video is that you’ve differentiated between mini and full size pedals on G2 via Capital and lower case letters 😂 fabulous as always gents, I agree with Mick, the bigger the pedal the more likely fellow gear nerds in the audience will recognise your pedal and assume you have superior tone 🤙

    Thanks loads for the feature guys!!!
    Mick - I was about to respond “well, you don’t often have all the knobs and switches on your guitars labelled and you’re fine”, then...
    (I can happily hand-paint control labels on the bigger PURRER as a custom request).
    And just a couple of notes for anyone who cares:
    - Just like the PURRER, the PURRER-mini is totally hardwired using high quality full size components, but just with streamlined circuit and controls.
    - With the “SOFT” toggle switch of the big PURRER flicked up, the frequency response would be much closer to the PURRER-mini.
    Cheers!
    Neil

    Hi Dan & Mick, I thought I'd drop you a quick line to say thanks for all you've taught me. In terms of dialling in pedals, and how to identify which pedals I might like your TH-cam channel has been immeasurably useful! I went to my first guitar show yesterday (Birmingham, UK) and because of your show I felt comfortable as a novice to try pedals, and get sounds out of them I liked. Thank you for the confidence boost!

    The early BBD chips generally gave a maximum delay time of 300 ms, which was also true of the Boss DM-2. Because I came up using that quarter-note triplet or dotted-eighth rhythmic delay sound, I never used those older analogue pedals because at 120 bpm, a quarter-note triplet is 333 ms and a dotted eighth-note delay is 375 ms. So, my first delay pedal was a Boss PS-2 Digital Pitch Shifter/Delay (1988?), and I've used digital delays ever since. The newer BBD chips now give much longer delays.

    • @Nightingale1887
      @Nightingale1887 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, they just cascade multiple chips into each other. Mostly because BBD chips are so cheap nowadays. Behringer having acquired CoolAudio just cloned older Panasonic MN.xxx designs which are/were the most dominant design used in the guitar cq music industry. EHX even switched to CA chips which dropped the price on Memory Man pedals a large bit. Personally I don't like these versions because of the increased noise, but ymmv.

    I have the Ibanez TS Mini. I didn't buy it because it was small and space saving, but I got it because it was the cheapest Screamer in the shop @ Riff City. Fortunately, it sounds great. It's also built like a tank, which is very important for a non-gigging, bedroom guitarist such as myself.

    Glad you guys have been giving the Fillmore 50 a run. I replaced my Mark V with one when they first came out (The MarkV rig had become impractical). I've been really enjoying it with or without drive pedals - really responsive EQ. Plays great with a G2 as well for switching channels and reverb and the effects loop works great. Almost always run mine in 25 watt mode so that I can open it up a bit more to hit it's output section sweet spot.

    Cool episode boys! My board is a mixture of several mini pedals and a few "normal" sized pedals. I use a centralized power source so lack of batteries is a non-issue. And I use Dual Lock, and find that there is no issue with the pedals flopping over to one side when I step on them. Now, having said that, it is true that the mini pedals don't save a huge amount of space due to side jack placement, and the need to be able to step on them individually, but they do save some space. Some mini pedals that I use and really like are: TC HOF and Flashback Minis, and Polytune Mini, and the Mooer Blues Crab, Yellow Comp and Hustle Drive. They just sound great, and they take up a little less space. I also use the Donner Boost Killer at the very end of my signal chain for a pure solo boost, and it sounds great, but I mainly got it because it was SOOoooo cheap :-)

    Thing #1: If you use a looper (Like G2 or Boss ES 8) with 5-10 loops then small pedals can really save space, that case, mini pedals really are worth the consideration. On that point, if your board is already full, but you need that one more pedal, maybe the mini-version is the only one that will fit.
    Thing #2: Dan, I love that you're taking a trip down the rabbit hole. I know you two have said before that you prefer a big amp with big sound moving air and tickling your bits, but for the rest of us that play on a silent stage and have to consider things like cab/amp simulators, its good to (hopefully) see you guys explore this a bit more.
    Keep up the good work!

    This was a great episode guys - it was fascinating hearing the difference between the size formats - hadn't realised there'd be that much of difference between some of them. I'm looking forward to your pedal board challenge - Weirdly I did almost the same thing at Christmas, I bought myself a Pedaltrain Nano board as an alternative to my big board. I had great fun working out which mini-format pedals would go on it. Ended up with a TC Polytune, JHS Prestige Boost and then had to go full-size with an Analogman modded Maxon OD9, Boss Waza delay.
    Thanks for this - love it!

    Great show! My first mini pedal was a Jordan BossTone that plugs into a guitar. Still my favorite '60's fuzz. I needed a Tremolo pedal and I didn't have space, so I got a Hotone Tremolo that is about half the size of your mini-pedals on the show. Tiny, but I only needed it for a few songs and it fit, so it's on board!

    First of all guys, I gotta say, thank you soooo much for all your videos! I've learned more from you both than imaginable!!! I just wanted to add here about the Mini Fuzz Face VS. the Larger Ones. A high advantage of the Mini other than the small cute size and LED and DC jack, is that they also have a Bias internal trim pot, accessible through the battery hatch on the back. It can be adjusted to taste or different saggy tones or wide open fuzz with a tiny phillips head screw driver! This IMO, is a huge advantage, to squeeze more types of tones from the Fuzz Face. (This also could be why there seems to be a bit of a difference in the top end and overall sound between the 2 pedals in this video, other than the difference in components and pcb/wiring... ?..)

    Hey Mick, the reason the Band of Gypsys Fuzz Face doesn't clean up, is because it's not a Fuzz Face. It's actually a heavily modified Octavio. Here's a pic of the PCB of the big version: files.effectsdatabase.com/gear/pics/hendrix_jh-f3_003.jpg
    The top left transistor is a BC 560, and the other 2 are MPS3904's.

  • @alexandermason8315
    @alexandermason8315 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really adore mini pedals for certain applications- I think as with so many things in the world of guitar its all about time and place. certain pedals in mini form are incredibly effective for what they do, and in moderation can give you a great way to capitalize on limited space, which is always a concern no matter the size of the board. as you mentioned, the Xotic pedals are great examples of a fantastic sounding product in a small enclosure. I also really love the Zvex Fuzzolo for that reason- it's a simplified and shrunk down hybrid of the Mastrotron and the Wooly Mammoth, but in a small enclosure. And especially given that so many fuzz pedals come in unconventional enclosures (not necessarily a bad thing), it's great to have a killer sounding pedal in a form that will actually fit on my board (i'm looking at you, Fuzz Face). That being said, moderation is SO critical. I think as tempting as a mini board sounds in theory, it just doesn't work out in practice.

  • @lexist7
    @lexist7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey chaps, I just happened to watch this video after repairing a mini ibanez delay. The blend knob on this one broke and instead of going through the trouble of replacing the potentiometer - too much work for a pedal that was practically given to me - I hotwired the blend knob to give you the same as putting it on 11 o'clock.
    What I noticed with the pedal is that anything past 11 o'clock definitely becomes "too busy and inarticulate" as you said. The repeat seems to be even louder than the original signal. Keeping the knob below half is definitely where you want to be with that pedal and that's the sweet spot for most of the settings you'd imagine you want an analog delay to do.

    Great show, the young men looked like they were having a great time and the kids at the start were very enthusiastic as well. VLSI makes sooo much possible in a small space. I think the FET transistor is one of, if not the, greatest invention of the 20th century, while VLSI may be the greatest manufacturing innovation. I love my tubes and relays, but solid state technology has revolutionised everything. What is really interesting is how far we have come with emulating and downsizing natural, physical effects with circuitry - a large space echo, room reflections, whirling speakers, etc.

    Hi Dan, electrical engineer here... Just a quick clarification on the surface mount component sizes. "0603" means 60 thousandths by 30 thousandths of an inch (also called 'mils' traditionally but has nothing to do with metric millimeters). The smaller components now are "0201" and smaller, such as "01005" where the latter is 10/1000 inch by 5/1000 of an inch! They look like specks of dust. There *are* metric sizes too, so an "0201" imperial is actually an "0603" metric (0.6x0.3mm)! Appreciate you diving into the electronic details sometimes! (Edited for accuracy.)

    Well, you convinced me, I'm sticking with my "big" Fuzz Face, it's sounds nicer than the mini one IMO. I have a couple of mini-pedals and they are okay but I generally prefer the bigger ones for a couple of reasons. One reason being that it's easier to tweak the big ones, I can even turn the knobs with my foot, which I can't do with the mini ones. Plus I prefer to be able to turn knobs on the outside and not have to fiddle with internal thingamybobs.
    Cheers.

    When getting to the SUHR RIOT with Dan playing the LP Mick intuitively dialled in a high gain sound that made even a metal player like myself happy.
    Saturated gain with good singing high mids, loads of growl without being muddy or boomy or unfocused like a fuzz would make it.
    Apparently a modern classic, and I can see why,- and more importantly,- good tone sculpting from Mick.
    Good job, Mick,- way to go!

    The moment you accidentally set both tube screamers on at the same time was so hot. That was the stuff!
    My observation about mini pedals is that so often the mini pedal is more aggressive sounding than the original big one. Has maybe more highs, level, gain/some kind of punch. They sound more modern than the originals to describe the sound in short.

A year later, I rebuilt my bass board with all Boss pedals, and transferred the tc mini pedals to a new guitar board (sans the HOF mini, since my guitar board uses a tc electronic Arena stereo reverb). In addition to the three others, I've added a tc electronic Wiretap and two (2) Spark mini boosters. I am more than happy to use mini pedals wherever I can, to save space, unless I need stereo, or there is some feature that a mini pedal lacks. I also have a full-size Spark booster on my guitar board.
    As far as spacing, I would prefer all my pedals have the footswitches at 100 mm centres, to which I'm accustomed, due to my long time use of Boss BCB-2 boxes, but that turns out to just not be practical when I'm trying to shove 12 pedals on a 19" wide pedalboard, so some of my mini pedals are as close as 70 (for the back row, that doesn't get switched during songs) or 75 mm on centre (for the front row, which does get switched during songs).
    Thanks so much for featuring the Mesa/Boogie Fillmore 50. I'm considering one to replace my Mesa/Boogie F-50 in the future.

      I have a narrow-chassis F-50, one of about the first 400 made, and the Fillmore 50 improves on the F-50 by adding a tube-driven reverb and FX loop, *and* having a much better reverb, overall, than the solid-state driven reverb in my F-50 (I think the later wide-body F-50 reverb is better?). In the F-50 only the FX loop is tube-driven. Plus the Fillmore adds a Presence control and triode/pentode mode switching, so it's a significant improvement from Mesa's earlier 50 Watt "simpler" (for Mesa) amps.

    Unrelated to this episode, but a possible idea for a show: I recently got a DOD Rubberneck (which replaced the Vapor Trail I bought a few years ago after seeing it reviewed here) and a Catalinbread Zero Point (my new favorite flanger). Both give real-time control over various elements of the sound, so you need to "play" the pedal - I don't know how many other pedals like this are out there or if it makes a good concept for the show, but if nothing else you guys should try the Rubberneck because it's unreal - 1000ms analog delay with tap tempo, oscillation switch, and the "rubberneck" feature that changes the delay time while you're playing.

    Dear Mick and Dan,ystematic
    thanks for your good work! Some awesome tones from todays amps, especially the Boogie.
    One thing I would like to suggest as a theme for an installment is a thorough and systematic discussion of different ways to set up your amp with regard to it's basic settings, i. e. relation between gain and master volume, amp EQ, and the like.
    Much has been said about clean and gainy amps and I have learned a ton by closely watching and trying out some of the many things you've been demonstrating so far. Yet, I think that there are many different tones to be had from e. g. different EQ settings and maybe other guys, too, would like to see the way that you gents go about setting up your own amps - I take it that the two of you have different "philosophies" to that regard, so, hopefully this idea appeals to you.
    Anyway, thanks again for all you've accomplished so far. Greetings from Berlin, Germany!
    J.

    as per usual the clean amp with delay was my favorite part. would love to see you guys do a really dark/murky/deranged delay show with stuff like the Meet Maude, 616 Lo-Fi, Echo Degrader, EAR 4096, etc

    Hey guys, great idea for a show!
    Mini fuzz faces: the Band of Gypsies version was red with white knobs. The dark blue one was the silicon one of the original batch of 3, which included the Hendrix you have here and a red germanium version. I tried all of the original 3 alongside each other & the dark blue didn’t clean up at all well compared to the other 2. I plumped for the one in this video, if you’re at all curious.

    Guys thanks so much for your incredible content! Would love to see a video in which you set up a pedalboard with at least one pedal mentioned in you shirt design and how to creatively switch placements, I think it would also be amazing to see each of you make one and compare ! Much love from Mexico

    “Dan has floor mounted the horn” I’ve been waiting for that!! Also I’m kinda hoping one of your good pedal creator friends will turn that into a pedal format, just one for you guys with either a real squeezable horn inside or an audio trigger/playback!!

    Late to the party on comments here. Busy weekend with some travel. Always enjoy your videos. I felt like this week the Tube Screamer and the Fuzz Face in either size didn't have the magic with the two amps. Even the Riot seemed to struggle with the Boogie. The Purrer seemed to hit both front ends just right and the delay was certainly awesome. For sure though, anyone of the smaller versions could do the job appropriately. As long as the user understood it was not a matter if simply matching the knobs. Thanks for all you do.

    Very cute intro. Problem I had was I ended up wanting to cram more and more and more pedals on my ‘mini pedal’ board so now have the excuse of having made my kids mini pedalboards even if they are only 3 and 5. They like clicking the buttons and turning the lights on and I get to ‘borrow’ them.

    I think the mini pedal for the occasional sound/just one song in the set, point is pretty valid. If the pedal sounds good in mini form and is only used occasionally then the mini one makes a lot of sense, but if it's a core part of your sound or just can't be matched in a small size then the inconvenience is a little more worthwhile. It's about the only reason I keep the markbass compressore on my board despite it being huge and a pain to power, it just has such a good sound.

    As an addendum, I would like to suggest that you also go into the tonal possibilities one has, just by changing volume settings on your guitar, the reason being that I've experiences huge differences in OD tones just by changing these settings with different OD pedals. I've been told that these differences seem to be even more pronounced with fuzzes…

    Great episode, One thing No one ever brings up about the TC Spark is it's momentary function. At any time if you press and hold, you can play a quick riff then let go and go back to rythm. Killer feature. I dont even worry how the boost sounds compared to other boost just for that!

    • @mobydick3895
      @mobydick3895 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does the big Spark pedal do that too? Apparently not, as far as I can tell. TC kinda messes up on this as far as marketing goes. Compare to the Vertex Boost, which provides a volume pedal driver function. If you don't want to have a volume pedal, the small Spark makes a compact solution! Even though the mini pedals are valid, for some reason I don't like them as a general rule, as my feet are too big.

      Well, if you don't consider the height. If you have two rows of pedals that makes a difference. Also, top mounted are the best with a pedal board with cutouts and a looper. Sometimes they are a pain.

    Great video, as always, guys! Only think I thought was maybe missing about the appeal of the mini pedals is that they're often a brilliant gateway to a particular effect due to their price?! TS mini is at least half the price of a 'normal' sized one, for example.
    I've definitely bought a few mini pedals as a kind of taster, and have then bought bigger/more expensive/more fully featured pedals in due course if I love the effect - mooer trelicopter is an example of that for me with tremolo!!

    Got an NRG Mini Purrer from Neil a couple of months ago and it's great (he even put my name on it - which is cool). I love mini pedals. I have a One Control Persian Green Screamer, which I love, a TC Sub'n'Up Mini and a Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone Micro... and an obligatory Ditto looper! All great, well built boxes o' fun. Can you get mini Dan & Mick to build the mini boards!?
