Why are Tanzania’s Maasai being forced off their ancestral land? | The Stream

  • Tanzania has renewed efforts to evict thousands of indigenous people from their ancestral land in the north of the country. It’s a move that the government claims will help bolster the country’s tourism industry through big game hunting.
The land in question is in Loliondo and is home to 70,000 Masaai people, a semi-nomadic ethnic group. The plan is to move the Maasai into the Ngorgongoro Conservation Area (NCA), a UNESCO designated World Heritage site for its global importance to biodiversity. It’s also home to some 80,000 previously evicted Maasai.
For years, Tanzania has tried to gain control of the land in an attempt to create a trophy hunting corridor for tourism companies like Otterlo Business Company, which is based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE.) The group’s exclusive 25-year deal with Tanzania, which brought in millions of dollars for the country’s military, ended in 2017.
The threat of eviction has grabbed the attention of the global activist organization, Avaaz, whose online petition has garnered more than 3 million signatures, including Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo.

The Tanzanian government claims the Maasai people are harming the land and the wild animals it supports, yet they want to create a corridor for trophy hunting and elite tourism. Hunting is lethal for animals and tourism can be a destructive force on the landscape. The Maasai, on the other hand, care for their land and its animals. Money and lack of economic creativity are an unethical combination. Al Jazeera, thank you and your guests for this much needed conversation.

Tanzania, where is the love? So much talk about colonialism, slavery, but no empathy for fellow Africans? And it is these people who have protected the wildlife for millennia. How can they suddenly become a danger to the very same wildlife?
Moreover, the whole of east Africa belongs to the Maa people as they were there long before other tribes like the Bantu, came along with their sedentary agriculture that enabled them to edge out the locals who are pastoralists.
We cannot talk of overpopulation when their area is gradually whittled away , pushing them into these last corners of desperate refuge.
Does it mean that the ugly head of corruption is again rising in Tanzania, after the passing away of their president, Mr. Magufuli?

There's a reason why Masaais are the best conservation heroes of all times: they don't kill wild animals for food. They kill them when they threaten their livelihood: livestock. You can't uproot a whole community of people from their ancestral land to give room to foreign trophy hunters and assorted destructors and not expect questions from the trustees entrusted that heritage by God Almighty from time immemorial. That's not right. Transfer of population is a crime for whatever reason under whatever pretext. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere. Before independence, under British colonial government serengeti ecosystem in 1959 was divided several times and maasai were removed from serengeti to ngorongoro to join with other masai who were living there for thousands years before colonialism and independence.
    Division of serengeti ecosystem was as follows;
One; 53% of total land for serengeti national park
Two; 4% for grumeti game reserve
    Three; 10% maswa game reserve
    Four; 3% irkorongo game reserve
Five; 30%ngorongoro, within this we have crater, olmoti crater, empakai crater, protected areas like crater highland forest. In 1975 also maasai who were living in crater were removed as well.
So its like maasai were given not more than 15% of total area.
Also the gvt sold 2% of this area to Arabian company for a contract of 99 years.
This community is living there not by mistake or bad luck but they have all right to be there as other tanzanian's who are living in other places. They have every right.
They are not animals or anything else as other parliament members and other people in the country has been discriminating them. The gvt should be ashamed of this.
Maasai ppl are not involved on ongoing relocating them to msomera village in handeni district. Instead the gvt is using other maasai from other areas and lie that they are ngorongoro ppl.
Other journalist are being paid to make wrong stories so it can be seen that the gvt is doing the right thing for the country, while ngorongoro residents are also Tanzanians.

The communities were seen as part of the tourism attraction. Now you want to root them out of their habitat, you want them to learn a new way of living suddenly. Educate people then we will all agree to bring positive change.

The maasai has in memorium, lived with the wildlife peacefully and understanding of the same is very important, which they do. Why can't the African governments make it possible for both to live together and be the beneficiaries of the income that is generated from controlled hunting. Why is it that the Africans leaders are of the inclination that the African person has to bend backwards for foreign multibillionaires to do as they wish in African countries regardless of their people's identity and dignity and universal human rights being impinge on? It's totally wrong for Tanzanian government to agree to this deal. And it's a huge shame that this far they have not been able to come up with a beneficial solution to especially the Tanzanians. Why not develop the area with better facilities like housing, modern livestock keeping and farming methods, natural resources management and roads infrastructure to make it possible for incorporation of both aspects of economic growth of the area in question. Does this equate African leaders as so incompetent to brain-storm on such a sensitive issue? Please give us a break!! This is 22nd century. Employ the brains of the young people who have degrees and still tarmacking looking for jobs whilst their great grandparents are still holding on to posts they can't fathom what's next on the agenda!! That's exactly why you find such stuff: "this is the only solution we have", as their working brown matter have seriously gone on recess. I am not being rude, but ask yourself, why would such happen to anyone in this day and age and in Africa, WHY??? Ask yourselves again, why is it that in Europe you find they have parks NOT zoos with all the tropical wildlife. Studying them all and creating an excellent environment for them that they can survive the winter. But African leaders upto date can't come up with a single solution on how TO earn handsomely, ready-made income by applying just a little structural adjustments within the natural environment and habitat of their income earner. It's a shame to say the least. SHAME!!
SUPPORT THE MAASAI to uphold their culture and traditions, and borrow a good leaf of the modern world, BUT moving them is illegal and should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
