1. MOYALE HOTEL: Mandazi + Githeri + Mongoka

🍛 MANDAZI (Deep Fried Bread): Mix wheat based all-purpose flour with water and sugar then knead into a dough. Cut into triangles and deep fried in hot vegetable oil.
🇰🇪 GITHERI (Maize and Beans): Boil maize and beans very soft. Fry mixture with onions, tomatoes and salt. Serve with cabbage.
🇰🇪 MONGOKA (Khat): Chew Khat leaves to ingest the juices and nutrients, then spit it out.

2. MAASAI HOMESTEAD (Manyatta): Raw Blood and Kidney + Goat Roast + Blood Soup
ADDRESS: Kimana Sanctuary, Amboseli

Our next stop on our Kenyan Food Tour brought us to the Maasai Homestead. We we watched how the men of the tribe sometimes prepare and roast a whole goat. This usually occurs when the Maasai men spend the night out in the plains after roaming far from home to graze the livestock. Per tradition, they don’t eat in front of women. They however take back certain pieces for the women, once they are done feasting. This bonding time with the Maasai men is said to build fraternity.
🇰🇪 RAW BLOOD AND KIDNEY: The goat is slaughtered and the blood is collected in a sufuria. This is drank fresh. Cuts like the kidney are also eaten raw.
🇰🇪 GOAT ROAST: The legs are skewered on makeshift spears, and are roasted upright around a central fire. Once ready, this will be cut in front of everyone and passed around the circle.
🇰🇪 BLOOD SOUP: The soup is made using herbs to cleanse the system. The intestines are boiled then fried in their own fat, and is then served. The liver is also roasted medium-rare and passed around in the circle until it is gone.

Maybe because the spotlight was on him busy explaining the nitty gritty on camera, methinks. Maybe the Moran had already been instructed, off camera, about what to do with the big piece of roasted meat. 😀 You never clearly know, not with the cuts and edits involved in such productions. All in all, the Mzee definately is in the know, about the correct aesthetics needed for a perfect video shoot. 😆

I read about the Masaai as a kid & as an African I was really impressed with their lifestyle. Remarkable how they have been able to preserve their traditions .

David Marino I visited Kenya and Tanzania and the Massai two years ago. Kenya and Tanzania were English colonies for decades. That’s why they speak english so well. Also I don’t want to bust anyone’s bubble but the masai live almost completely from rich western tourists. Everyday there are Safari cars coming to their villages with tourists who buy souvenirs.

I met kenyan in the airplane on my way to bali last July. I was very cold bcz of the Air conditioning blow on me. She offered me her only blanket. After landing i returned to her. Am I wrong or are you Salah? To me civilisation means when man is morally cultivated to his highest capacity, where one would practice humane qualities among his fellow humans, to be in balance with nature. I think that’s what civil means, the root word for civilisation.
On the other hand, you have civilisation of barbarianism, which is one of materialism, maybe that’s the kind you’re familiar with. But to be fair to you, you are not unique in your perspective and understanding. Peace.
