I took an art class in college where the anology of light hues (colors) was taught exensively - the study of colors fucused on how light is refracted, relected and absorbed. This was studied to create several effects with a piece of art. The professor was an avid bass fisherman - when I found that out, we talked in great detail about the correlation between colors, contracting colors using the color spectrum chart and the importance of how to oberve light energy in our enviroment. Key to Professor Robert's teaching was matching contracting colors from opposite sides of the color spectrum chart - reason: one contrasting color serves to make the other more visible than if the color existed alone or with another non-contrasting color. Additionally, Professor taught contrasting colors are even more visisble in areas where light refraction is exaggerated such as a sandy bottom or concrete structure. After the five page essay we had to write about the analogy of colors and assigment to create an art piece to support our thesis - you are spot on. David Frits mention something on this topic as well. Thanks for having classy discussions, Matt.

I most definitely believe that contrast helps trigger fish into biting. The biggest fish I've ever caught came from contrasting lures like a Mepps Black Fury (Blade blade w/ yellow dots). If you look back at the old Daredevil spoons, you'll see mostly red with a white stripe or black with a white stripe.
When I get a new crankbait, I actually paint the top with dark fingernail polish (usually dark purple with sparkles). I believe fish hone in on the top of the bait more than any place. That may be why the contrast at the top seems important. I also use lots of dyes on soft baits to add contrast.

  • @maxcole3930

The contrast makes sense to me because of most fish species have a light & dark to them. Plus regardless of water clarity or lighting conditions, one of the 2 either light or dark will stand out more for the fish to see.

🍺I have strong opinions and theories on this topic but it would take too long to explain with any specific detail. 🤠Short version and generally speaking. With FFS always lead (suspended) fish so they don’t see the bait land/splash or fall vertically to their depth. Crankbaits get the bait to the fishes depth or on the bottom BEFORE the primary location of your suspected fish. This drastically increases the fishes ability to see any contrasting colors that your bait may have, looks much more natural, and stealth/surprise is what causes the so called “ reactionary” bites.🤠

@@romaloboda2280 🍺I personally prefer contrasting colors. I believe that the bass top sense is its eyes/vision when feeding. If you bring your bait to the fish at the same level as the fish they have a better likelihood of seeing it.

Without trying or meaning to pick on other companies, i feel this is why on square bills i do better with lucky craft 1.5, than say strike king. Both have great colors both have similiar action, but the artwork on lucky craft is unreal. Now kvd the Goat fishes fast, so maybe he burns it by the fish and they dont have time to think. But i fish square bills all diff speeds, and for me, a life like color in lucky craft i can slow it down and blast em. Yes fish metabolism goes up in warmer water, but in Arizona hot water, they often get lethargic 80% of the day

So one of the most effective crank baits I've ever used and seen used is the bumble bee. It has the black stripes albeit vertical down the sides but they wobble hard, rattle inside, spinner blade for tail flash and the faster you crank the more they move to the side. Perhaps that was the early without intent. The Rapala raps have brought home lots of fish for us all. This contrast idea does it apply to all forage like craw n other baits that don't wiggle about like shad perch blue gil sunfish minnows. I learned as a fly fishermen to match the hatch as it were. Certainly matching the forage what ever the time of year and color of each body of water is a proven need so how does the hatch effect the bait choice with a crank bait like the one you're showing. I've never seen say an orange one with brown top with a fade like that. Then again I don't spend ours in the tackle sites so you've probably seen such. Maybe Berkley should share some of this research with us simple folk. Seems the same old stuff is in the isles were I'm forced to shop.

I can believe it. I know for sure contrast is a well known thing among Crappie fishermen. Thats why you see all those wild 2 tone colors when you look at crappie jigs and plastics. Obviously there aint to many Electric Chicken or Hot Pink and Chartruse shad swimming around in our lakes, but its the contrast of those baits that Crappie go wild over. It makes perfect sense that Bass would be the same way.

  • @comfortablynumb9342

Very interesting stuff. Lures without hooks run different than a lure with hooks, even changing hook sizes can affect lure action. But the color stuff is still relevant and I'm sure Berkley knows what hooks do to lures.
I agree with using contrasting lures because the bait fish I want to mimic have light sides and dark backs. I never thought about it much other than that. I have used Gulp soft plastic Swimming Mullet with a glow in the dark body and bright orange tails at night. They seemed better than solid glow in the dark and they have a contrast. So multiple colors seem to help in the saltwater too.

  • @farrzmd3038
    @farrzmd3038 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think there’s something to it for sure. I fish mostly muddy water so I’ve started seeking out contrast like that after spending last year learning crankbaits. The best producing bait colors were silver black back, blue back - chrome side- orange belly, and dark grey top - opaque belly. So I started applying it to all my baits using a color wheel. So Blue - orange, purple - yellowish brown, red - green for example are the jig skirts I make, and the colors I seek out in soft plastics. Swim jigs are now half tab black, two tabs pearl or ghost. Contrast works for me.

In my experience I think this information holds true sometimes but not always. On my crankbaits I believe contrast works but with jerkbaits and soft plastics I would disagree. Swimbaits for example, seems like all white works better than any other color whether on an A-rig or not.

I wonder if the shoulders moving side to side is the aquatic equivalent to a land animal with a leg limp. It’s moving in a way that looks vulnerable. (I also in the side-to-side movement is more of a trigger than a tail kick - as evidenced by the damiki rig success that we’ve seen. May be a good idea use 2-tone baits there too. Like pro-blue.). Just my thoughts.

I’d definitely agree . 1 of my most productive baits is a white Chatterbait with a dark blue trailer ( same with a spinnerbait ) and I think it’s that contrast that’s the key

Yea. I run black and blue chatterbaits with hot snakes colored paddle trails, and they seem to really perform well.

@@S2pidMedia I’ve got a lot of crappie and white perch in the waters I fish and I think the white with blue (or black ) imitates them really well . Perch or bluegill patterns are also crazy effective everywhere I fish ( just depends on conditions for what I throw )

@@Oldbasshole same. Got everything up here. But no shad locally. Kinda odd, but the patterns still work. I'm gonna try that white and dark blue as soon as the ice melts away lol.

Informative video. Those fish that take 7 or 8 times to learn are the ones I catch.👍👍👍👍👍
