  • When it comes to online privacy, people are dishonest with themselves. They say they care, but they don’t act like it. This discrepancy is called the Privacy Paradox. Lou explains why it exists, and what psychological tricks tech companies use to get you to give up your personal information.

      Yeah, I'd like to see someone test the delete functionality. I'll wager that if you delete your account and then sign back up, all of your stuff will still be there. :P I bet there is something in the fine print that says that they will keep all of your data intact until a certain point in time, like after a few months or a year. It's still a pain in the ass to do it. And try explaining how to do it to your average non-tech savvy family member before their eyes start glazing over. heheheh ;)

    Had a boss ask me in 1992 why I use the internet, and what I saw in it. I told him that it was the future of communications, shopping, music, media, and more.
    He vehemently disagreed, stating, *_"Nobody will EVER be stupid enough to type their real name or credit card number into a website."_*
    Yep.

    I think the main reason we say we care and still give up our privacy is lack of viable alternatives. Google is the most convenient, so there's no way I'm gonna use an alternative to gmail/google/calendar etc. Fb messenger has everyone I know on it, so there's no way I can use a more privacy respecting messenger, because I'll never get everyone I know to switch. That's my main reason behind the 'privacy paradox' in my life. Probably applies to a lot of people.

    Guy entering a career in tech here. I think people definitely overshare online, but that's before considering the data corporations collect.. that's considering what they make public information. I for one don't mind the information that's been collected on me. Before I do something online I know that it's possible for people to know about it in advance.. every comment, post, or search. I'm excited how all the information computers are able to collect can be used. Technology will be able to better serve us the more it knows about us.. of course it'll be able to better exploit us, but everything is a double-edged sword and people need to learn to protect themselves regardless. Not even thinking of the amazing things personal AIs will be able to provide us... know more about me, serve me better.

    • @LouisFoglia

      Thanks for sharing your perspective. There are definitely tradeoffs. On the positive side - all these social media platforms and email services are free. That's easy to take for granted, but it's awesome. Also, I actually like targeted ads. They make ads more relevant for me. I just wish tech companies made it easier to understand the agreement I was entering into.

    I believe the reason we give up our privacy so easily is because there clearly is a case of asymmetric information, where the customer do not fully know the consequence and how the data could be used. The present bias is clearly a cause too. But the main problem, that Lou pointed, is that we are governed by people who are totally lost in this world of technology, same with teachers today we often have students in school who are better with the technology that govern our lives than teachers supposed to explain them how to use it safely and efficiently...

    9:45 When I worked at MySpace from 2005-2008, we eventually set up shop in China. We even had a Chinese "Tom" to be everyone's first friend. It's risky business, because the government can accuse you of something at any time, demand that you leave immediately, and then assert that they have a right to keep your assets.

    Want better politicians? Here's the thing, they don't make enough money and they get too much grief. In the UK a senior politician makes a pittance compared to the CEO of a modest sized business. They also have to fight to keep their job every few years and face constant scrutiny by the press. The damn electorate want a piece of them too. Who the heck wants a job like that? Oh right, rich unscrupulous people who are milking the contacts they make in government to further their interests outside. Gotcha.
    Want better politicians? Make it attractive to the ordinary man. Give them a lot more salary, cut out the fundraising nonsense (fixed budgets for campaigns provided by the government) and have the press back off a little. Then maybe you'll get some better applications for the job from hell. Until then expect more embarrassing scenes like the "grilling" of Mr Zuckerberg .

    Privacy is a relatively recent concept in the context of human history. For example noblemen in the Middle Ages would have to go to fortified hunting lodges with trusted retainers in order to achieve the smallest levels of confidentiality. Local communities, traditionally, have been remarkably 'leaky' when it comes to personal information.

You need all those clauses in a Terms of Service, ... to protect your business legally. Because if you don't put them in; there are a lot of reasons to sue you.. The date when GDPR has to be implemented is may 25, not 18 :-) But please, make an episode about it! As a developer, GDPR is a little bit of a nightmare to even understand what has to be done since the regulation kind of has to be interpreted, but on the other hand you really understand how much personal data is stored about evertbody. With GDPR every little piece of data stored has to be motivated and it has to be explained to and accepted by the user.

    Kinda the way I feel is, that shit isnt particularly important to me and I don't use that data anyways. If people would give me a substantial amount of money if I could sell it myself, I probably would be mad that someone else is selling it, but that's typically not the case because we would charge more than people would pay. Now, I'm aware of how to change my settings and whatnot, but I'm not the typical user, either, and I'm not particularly concerned about it anyway. I don't use those sorts of places to have secret conversations.

    We choose Google because we are simply too dependent on it, we cannot rely on other service and product because nothing compete Google's flexibility and reliablity. I dont' want to vote for anyone over 50. The people my age still are thinking WWII was a war. They are one past the buggy whip mentality. Solar, Electric cars? My sister can't do digital photos. Trump still thinks like it is the 70's. At least 50 year olds have been exposed to computers since they were born. Some basic understanding hopefully took hold. The last election of deciding between OLD seniors was so appalling. There is nobody in the US below 75 years old that can run a modern country. I applaud china for having a way more savvy government than we have. Other presidents fly Casey Neistat to their country to meet him. 99% of our fossils waiting to turn to dust don't even have a clue about youtube or what it is. I cut my TV cord 4 years ago when I was 61 and am trying to get on the list for skylink. I had a discussion with an ancient Iphone user that was so proud of the simplicity of his phone. He had no clue that other services and devices are so much better. I guess their brains are dying off and they have limited capacity to process anything new. It would be neat to see what the info collected on these fossils would be like. I guess Apple has all that info as they just straight lie to people to get a sale at Costco. The Apple salesperson stated like a real fact that Samsungs only charge with a proprietary wireless charger. I have had a cheap wireless charger on my phones for 4 years. This was December 2017.
    One thing these companies do is not allow you on to the service unless you agree.
    Southpark had a great episode on AGREE where Jobs was getting people to stick their head up other people rear ends because they agreed to it in their online agreement. Pretty funny to see. That happens on these sites, if you don't agree, then you get booted off. No in between ground.
    Great Video as Usual.

      I'm 54, and don't want those 80+ people in office. Their lack of tech understanding is just a start. They cannot comprehend things that they cannot see, such as mental illness. They understand a broken bone, but not a broken mind, because they cannot see it.
      I do have an understanding of tech, since I spent three years on a little website called MySpace. Got my start in computer rentals in 1987. First used the internet in 1978 to play checkers and access a BBS.
      But the further you get above 60, the less likely it is that they will have tech understanding.
      Can you run a SQL query? Open and utilize a CMD shell? Find a missing HTML tag? Use DOS commands? Find answers to tech questions on Stack Overflow? If not, then you cannot get my vote.

It’s not the governments job to use its power to mess with private businesses. Companies have the right to do what they want if they let you know and they do in the fine print.

    The thing that I miss in the discussion about all these web-services and privacy is that we, the consumers, use all these services and website for free. And we have the feeling that it is our right to use them for free. How much does it cost to run a business like Facebook or Google? None has spoken about a payed version of Facebook (i.e.) without advertisements and 100% guaranteed privacy. But are we willing to pay for FB, YT, gmail, Yahoo Insta newspapers website and all the rest? I think that we prefer the Free version in exchains for some complain from time to time.

    • @LouisFoglia
      @LouisFoglia 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah - I think about this a lot. I get into it a bit in the ad blocker video we did a few weeks ago. Do I think we owe Facebook the opportunity to sell our attention to advertisers? Yes. But what else OF OURS should they be allowed to sell? Whatever the answer - I just wish the transaction was much clearer and people knew exactly what the tradeoff was and how it can impact them.

    • @maestrokimon
      @maestrokimon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with you on the transparency mater. And they could just give us the opportunity to a payed site with no ads and 100% privacy. Then it would be a choice of the consumer to throw his privacy out of the window! A bit like TH-cam Red but this is only an US service of YT. do you have any experience with YT Red?

    Tbh, I lose some respect for news outlets that use that tiny little piece of a clip of Senator Orrin Hatch's question. There's vital context that's left out, and the clip is then used as an example of how "uninformed" senators are and how they "didn't know the right questions to ask". Sen. Hatch fully understood that Facebook uses ads in order to keep the platform free to the users. He was making clear the point that that is the reason Facebook uses ads to get revenue, and otherwise Facebook would need to charge every user in order to sustain themselves. I'm not particularly a fan of Senator Hatch, but using a fully out of context clip of him trying to make clear a perfectly valid point is just wrong in my opinion. That question was one in the line of multiple that made it clear Sen. Hatch understood what he was inquiring about.

    Look, we all knew that when Facebook implemented algorithmic post orders vs chronological, it could only mean control over the content we saw. We continued to place our trust in not only them, but also random headlines without clicking through to the website/article, poorly worded posters without citations, statuses about crazy shit that used to be whispered at the bar, etc. We became victim to our own lack of intuition, Facebook just served it up on a garnished plate and skimmed away exorbitant profits. If you didn't suspect something from a free product, then you deserved this, or a wake-up call like this, all along

But fact is, any candidate that runs on a platform of picking a fight with Google/Facebook will simply get blacked out by those same services. Imagine a House or Senate candidate whose name pulls up totally unrelated people on Google. It's a losing fight. Almost like picking a fight with Walter Cronkite or Rupert Murdoch before the popularity of the Internet.

    How i see it is, everyone sees the value proposition for using these services as worth it in exchange for losing privacy. You cant not be on Facebook or Instagram these days, EVERYONE is

  • @SimonAZ

    They collect so much more than you are sharing. If it was only about what you share publicly this was not such a big problem. E.g. they discovered Facebook pixels on websites of health care providers. And they can link this information to your profile. Facebook wants to collect hospital information on patients. It says this is not personal information however they know where you were on a particular day so they can link probably everythibg in a minute. Jan Koum is leaving Facebook and this seems to be about discussions about privacy. This worries me. What I share on Whatsapp is private and should stay private.

    Who cares if someone knows your quiz results or public photos. You shouldn't post things you don't want people to see anyway. Turn off location services and don't post info you don't want people to know. It's pretty easy.
    Also these companies don't sell your data. They use it for ad targeting, so the advertisers never see any of the data.

    I spy a sticker on your drink koozie that says "Dark Patterns", Lou! ;) For those interested in learning what that is referring to, check out Nerdwriter's video titled "How Dark Patterns Trick You Online" here: th-cam.com/video/kxkrdLI6e6M/w-d-xo.html TL;DW: basically, it's how program interface creators design things so that you're likely to accidentally do/click on the opposite of what you really want to. Lou alludes to it a little at beginning of the video. Thanks, Lou! I'm going to go live my life now! :)

    This is an issue that needs more attention, but not this one-sided fear-mongering. You're painting all of these tech companies as single-mindedly malicious, "exploiting" users instead of enabling them, "tricking" them into LESS privacy with no exploration into what that gives them MORE of. Your club example is a strawman argument, not an honest exploration of tradeoffs.
    Beme you've really dropped the ball on this one. Privacy is important, but sensationalism is not how you get intelligent and tech literate people involved or better policies created. Sensationalism is how you get crap like the TSA created.

    Regulation is not the answer. If people don't care enough about privacy to change their privacy settings, and are happy to use free services that mine their data to show ads, there are no rules the government can make that will stop it. In Europe sites are required to tell you if they are using cookies... I'd be interested to know how many people actually change their behavior when this notification is on basically every site on the internet. My guess is that it changes virtually nothing.
    Also I'm not sure why you're buying the whole Cambridge Analytica "scandal." What they did in regards to people's privacy, while a bit creepy, is basically the same thing that the Obama campaigns and every modern campaign does. The only reason why it's a scandal now is because so much of the media hates President Trump. By all means lets discuss how political campaigns obtain and use data, but let's not pretend the Trump campaign was in any way unusual.

    Hello Lou - is Crypto the answer to our data and controlling it. I found this company that is working on this issue Datum - datum.org/ - Do you think because we don't control it we don't understand the true value of our data?.. What are your thoughts?

      Ads are the part of low privacy that we understand and accept and can sometimes even appreciate. It's the parts that we don't commonly understand, like Cambridge analitica using propaganda, or shady governments targeting dissenters, that's more of a problem

    • @Always.Smarter
      @Always.Smarter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, ads are toxic, they violate your privacy and spread malware. use an adblocker like ublock origin or preferably use the brave browser so google isn't tracking everything you do in your browser regardless of the privacy settings on facebook or whichever website.
