  • My Harbor Freight 20-ton press was just taking up much needed space in the shop and I decided to make it into an effective tool. Over the course of two months or so I did the following:
    Welded a base frame on
    Installed Castors
    Made a plywood bottom
Welded together a finger press break kit.
Made some pin extenders and a mount for them
Altered the beam pins for safety
Swapped out the manual 20t jack for an air/hydraulic one
    Primed and painted everything
I am most proud of the extension pins and the pin holder. I did some initial concept sketches and then opened AutoCAD for some part design. Next step was to have SendCutSend cuts my parts out. The parts arrived in 4 days and a week or so later, I welded/bolted everything together on a Saturday. I don’t show it in the video, but the bottoms of the pins are drilled and tapped 1/2”-13 so that I can bolt in snapped dies and also smaller diameter pin extensions for pressing out u-joints and such
Total cost was $610 for all the parts, material, paint, castors, hardware, hoses, and foot pedal. Not the cheapest option, but this thing is MINE and will last me the rest of my working life. I also feel that in the month since I finished it, that the press has finally earned its real estate in the shop, seeing action a couple times a week.

Nice...as far as plates...I went to metal supermarket and got them to cut 1x6 inch flat stock to make new plates. Popped indexing pins in them and they are in there nice...way better than the cast plates. Nice mods, good ideas.

"Pay for it's real estate" Good phrase I'll try to remember that. It's an extremely important issue.

I made the same move to the air jack. I cut the top of the original jack off and welded it to the bottom of the beam directly under the new jack because it has an adjustable post on it which helps with the jack having to travel to much. I like the mods you made.

Real nice job. I really like the pins and holder. I saw another video were the guy place small round great earth magnets in the pins from the Jack and they seemed to hold the additional pins just fine. I subbed.

I have tried I believe every kind off lube known to man for tapping harder metals, mainly AR400 and 500 and I have found I break very few taps using Castrol moly d. Tried tap magic before and didn't do much good.

    Thanks for the video!
My HF air/hydraulic pump failed some time ago. I've had it apart, cleaned, lubed it, checked all lines, etc and see no cause for the problem. It is dead. The BOTTLE works fine manually as it always did, but I cannot find any source for just the air pump (cannot afford the bottle+pump assembly again) - any clues?
Note: I do have a regular floor model pedal air pump for a CH-70 punch press, but do not see how to connect it to the HF 20 ton bottle. ANY comments, links, or clues welcome! Thanks again!

I don’t. You can buy one from SWAG off-road. Both aluminum and printed
